Users / Which CPU for hybrid
« on: December 03, 2008, 01:51:24 pm »
Ah the good old which CPU question.  This should get some healthy debate going.
Dare I ask the AMD or Intel question, but to at least make it a little less personally.  Which is best for a newbie and why?  Is one easier for the install or ongoing running.  Lets ignore costs or types for the moment.

Second question is dual or quad core?  Lets say the price differents in very little between a dual and quad core.  Which is best and why?
Is outright speed better or multitasking?
Again is there any know installation isssue that could make life hell for a newbie?

Oh and sorry for any great debate that this could start

Cheers

Users / Learn about networking (hard and software)
« on: November 22, 2008, 02:40:22 pm »
Hello peoples

Does anyone know a good step-by-step guide for setting up networking.
I am a newbie to the setting up of networking both hardware and software.  I would love to read through a good, easy, network setup for dummies guide.  I am in the process of setting up a standalone hybrid as my intro to Linux and LinuxMCE.  One I get that up and working I want to start setting up the networking side of things but I have a lot to learn.

I am one of those people that writes himself a step-by-step guide for everything I do on the computer.  do you think that would be helpfully in the Wiki once I have got it sorted?  It will take me a couple of months though.

Users / Which LMCE to download
« on: November 18, 2008, 08:52:33 pm »
Which LMCE is best to download and what is the difference.

I can download anyamount of data so the file size is not an issue here.  I am new and building a Hybrid from scratch.  This will also be my first Linux project so I an trying to eliminate as many traps as possible at the from end to try and make it as good experience as possible for my first time.

Which one is best to download out of the DVD versions
DVD or DVD-DL and what is the difference?

What does the *****-rc1 *****-rc2 mean?  Is the two files (part A and part B) and therefroe 2 DVD's that I need to create?
Or is it two different versions?  If yes then which would be the best for me to use?

Users / HELP: Cannot download LMCE
« on: November 18, 2008, 04:08:16 pm »
Good Morning

I am trying to download LinuxMCE at work due to not having enough download size at home.  I can only download 2GB at home so I want to use an XP machine at work to download the 2 DVD.iso's, while on nightshift
I have started the downloads a couple of time and directed XP to save the DVD.iso to my documents/downloads
Nothing appears in that folder.
As the download speed at work is only 56kbs, the total download will take a few nights to complete.  I came back the next night to start the download again and it starts from scratch and still nothing in the downloads folder.
I am using the Australian Mirror (http://linuxmce.ihas.com.au/) but I can use any other if it a mirror related issue.

Can anyone help me out here.  How do I get XP to shown the DVD'iso file?  This is so I can trqansfer it to me USB drive to take home later
Also how do I get it to continue on the next night from where it left off the night before?

Cheers

Users / gigabyte MoBo with Nvidia 7800 chipset for HYbrid
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:47:06 pm »
I am looking at setting up a hybrid and I see that gigabyte MoBo's (eg GA-M750SLI-DS4) have the Nvidia  chipset for onboard.  Is this good enough to do the UI2 and output graphics to my Plasma?  Or do I need to get a Geforce graphics card?  Or do I not understand the whole Nvidia chipset nit properly?

Users / Hybrid minimum requirments
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:52:32 pm »
OK I have done a heap of reading and thanks to those that pointed me in the right directions.  I found a good source to assist with the fact that I am in Australia and trying this.
Im onboard and what to dip my toe in.
My first att emp will be as simple a system as I can do, so I thought it best to build a Hybrid for my kids to use.  If my 5 year old can use it then at least he can teach me and mom how to use it.

What I want to build is a hybrid that can be used by the kids to watch there very large collection of DVD's, and free to air Digital TV (standard definiation as they only have a 69cm CRT TV that is 10 years old)
Thats it to start with (baby steps)

My question is what is the minimum setup that I can get away with?  EG processor speed, ram, etc
Harddrive is no problem as I already have 2 X 500GB Hardrives with all thier movies stored on my XP machine that I can move into the new case (after installing LinuxMCE).  I will only use hardware that is listed in the Wiki, as this will mean less things to go wrong.

Cheers Chipppy
Any suggestion on how to keep the cost down (and therefore the handbrake happy)

Users / Where do newbies go to start learning about LinuxMCE?
« on: November 01, 2008, 02:03:51 pm »
Hello
I am a newbie and I would like some direction on where to go first to start learning about LinuxMCE.  I have read the Wiki (had to google that to findout what it meant).  I want to learn more indepth so that I can look at buying in  some hardware etc to set up a hybrid that can become a stand alone core later on but where do I go in the forums to talk to people????
I am trying to understand a lot of this stuff but I dont know much about networking and my computer skills are not the greatest to start with.  I am struggling with all the TLA's, so I need the real neeewwbbiiee type help.
