And also the website repo, otherwise the Hulu Player option does not show up under software modules

Just because it's a "good card" doesn't necessarily mean that it's well supported in Linux.  Google that card and "linux" or "linux support" - I saw a few outstanding issues in my quick look.  You'll have to do some research to see where the issues lie.

...Zerk...
"apt-get update" updates the local package list... "apt-get upgrade" updates the packages.  You need to do both to actually get updates.

Thom doesn't like it when people try to bend things, and gets annoyed when people ask a question and immediately disregard the answer.

Your experience will undoubtedly be better if you don't put it in a VM or dual boot - you already knew this, and you've basically said that you're going to ignore my answer.  I personally don't care what you do, so long as it makes you happy and you don't complain when it doesn't work flawlessly.  You know the limitations of VMs and dual booting, so have at it.  Make sure you read the documentation - start with the FAQ ( http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/FAQ )

2) updating lmce: what update mechanisms are available? i found out that in the webadmin there is a link called "force update" (More --> Advanced Options --> Force Upgrade Now) - can this be pressed without destroying the whole system? "force" sounds so hard, i am afraid to destroy it ;) There is another link i found: sqlcvs update. Whats that for?
I don't believe the "Force Upgrade" does anything at the moment.  sqlCVS is not for you to play with unless you know what you're doing, or are told to by someone.  This updates the configuration database.  It happens automatically when updates come in.  The current update strategy is described on the beta page, I believe -  "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get upgrade"

3) RAM: i have 2x2GB ram installed, but since its a 32bit kubuntu it just recognizes 2,3GB - am i able to change that somehow?
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/40205

4) iTunes: is the lmce audio library possible to play music that was bought via iTunes?
Probably not, that stuff is full of DRM, but I can't say I've tried it.

5) Audio playing: is there anything like a visualization, as we know it from windows media player, for the audio? i personally like that stuff and its better than having pictures/flickr in the background ;)
Not currently.

6) 100% cpu: while playing 1080p movies (between 6 to 25GB per file), one core gets stressed by mplayer / xine to 100%. is this normal? can i somehow lay some calculations on the GPU?
search the forums and wiki for vadpau

7) i dont know how to explain that exactly - i hope you will understand ... when playing videos on my philips aurea (40'', full hd) it looks like parts of the screen are later updated than others. the best example is a flying camera over some mountains (braveheart intro e.g.) - the lower part is running smooth, the top quarter is updated later so you see the delay (looks like lagging). if you dont understand it i can try recording the screen and post the video here.
Re-run AVWizard ( http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard ) and select "medium" (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/AVWizard_Step_by_Step#Select_Graphical_User_Interface)

Based on #7 and #6, it sounds like you don't have that good of a graphics card... See the FAQ ( http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/FAQ ) section on graphics card selection.

Right, so there were a few issues here...
1) Package lists aren't being updated for some people.  I'm one of them - this is why I got nowhere with the install.  http://svn.linuxmce.org/trac.cgi/ticket/615
2) There was some missing stuff related to getting the hulu plugin package - Thom added it, now it works right.  sqlCVS update the dce repo to get the changes.
3) I was unable to get the autogenerated scenario to appear on orbiters until I manually sorted them in the web admin several times.  This is because UpdateEntArea_Media.cpp assumes that it can just select iOrder numbers without checking what exists in the database.  In my case, one iOrder was used twice.

I now have Hulu running.  The Orbiter controls are not ready yet - you must use a remote with arrows or a keyboard.  Other than that, it looks like it works.

I did an apt-get install lmce-hulu-plugin on the core, and reloaded the router. Hulu works now.

um... I can't install that package... it doesn't exist.  Yes, I apt-get updated... Yes, I tried apt-cache search to see if there was a spelling error.  Yes, I checked to make sure it isn't already installed... No hulu packages anywhere.

Does your motherboard have an onboard video chip that you are not using, but have not disabled?

When I launch hulu, I get the message: I cannot play this media. Perhaps there is no a valid device in this entertainment area capable of playing it.

I believe this is because the hulu_plugin.so is missing.  I am experiencing the same issue.

1) there's nothing technically limiting you from doing this if you really want to... but it defeats the purpose of having the system since you won't be able to access the features for some amount of time...  You realize that LinuxMCE runs a MythTV instance in the background, right?  You can import your stuff into that if you're tricky - I made a post about it somewhere when someone asked something similar.
2) again, this is more trouble that it is probably worth, and will not get you the results you are looking for, especially for media playback.
3) by 65xx I'm assuming you mean one of these: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=42805 .  Yes, this has the power to do everything you're doing now with LinuxMCE, as far as I know.  LinuxMCE hosts most of the services you have set up manually - Myth, samba, and mythweb are all installed for you.  So is a complete network management pacage.
4) ...read the FAQ and other forum posts.  LinuxMCE can use X10 devices.

You need to read the FAQ in its entirety.

My TV does have HDMI, but not RS232, another problem this would solve.....

Assuming that your TV can handle CEC communications...  As I understand it, most do not support those features yet.

Your analysis of the situation isn't quite correct...

mysql> select * FROM Users
    -> update Users set Password=md5("josh") where UserName="josh"; quit;
ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'update Users set Password=md5("josh") where UserName="josh"' at line 2
Bye

What you've done here is run one incorrect query where you meant to run 2 distinct queries.  See how on the second line the "mysql>" has turned into a "->"?  This means MySQL is still waiting for you to tell it that you're done with this query.  All queries end with a ";".

Since you didn't do that, you didn't list the users, and you didn't update the password.  Try this instead:
Code: [Select]
SELECT * FROM Users;

And assuming that you'd like to change the password associated with username "josh":
Code: [Select]
UPDATE Users SET Password=md5("josh") WHERE UserName="josh";

Then to exit the MySQL console:
Code: [Select]
quit

My point was that CEC doesn't seem to solve any problems that RS232 doesn't solve, except one less cable.
