16  LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Insteon How-To? on: January 16, 2013, 03:24:41 pm
So, almost two years later I'm dragging my insteon gear out back out of the box. I have a serial modem and a light switch. I used the 1932 template to install the modem. Looks like that went OK - the log shows 2500 lines of code and the device appears to start when I reboot. Also the LED on the modem shows serial activity. I cross linked the insteon gear by pressing and holding the buttons on the light switch and modem. I think this went OK because the modem turned the light on.
My question is now what? Is the modem supposed to tell LMCE that it has a connected light, or do I have to manually create the device?

Google Audiosource amps for cheaper prices (B&H, Parts Express).

instead of deleting I suggest marking them as obsolete, except if they are false.

Point taken. Perhaps I mis-spoke. We should keep the content (marking obsolete as necessary), but I still think we need to delete a lot of the wiki's maze-like structure. I often find it easier to find wiki articles from a Google search "LinuxMCE black screen" or whatever. Good info on a particular piece of hardware might be found by looking at the main page of the wiki under "Hardware", but maybe the info is in "Tutorials/Guides" or the "User Manual", or the FAQ, or maybe its floating around in the wiki at large.
The frustrated user then asks a question in the forums, where a frustrated Thom complains (rightly so) that he has answered that question a thousand times.

Here is what I like to see happen. A new user want to build up a hybrid core. He clicks on "Core & Hybrid" from "Favourites" on the wiki main page. Here he sees a general overview on building a core followed by links to major components (motherboard, cpu, gpu, faqs, etc). All the info he needs is right there.

Our wiki is about as unfriendly as it can be. Want to know how to set up a RAID? Go to tutorials, but don't expect it to be under "R" - its under "C" for "Create RAID". Want to learn about PXE boot? Don't look at "P" - its under "G" fro "GRUB PXE network boot"

Mcefan,

There was a push a while back to clean up the wiki. FWIW, I'll give you my vision of how to improve things. First, we have a single starting point - the "favorites" navigation bar categories seem ideal for this. Second, we get some Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to take responsibility for each category. Third, the SMEs find all wiki articles relating to their subject, and create links to the favorites page. Fourth, the SMEs solicit new wiki articles to fill in the holes. Fifth, we delete all other wiki trees and structures to prevent duplication of effort and misplaced articles.

Hauppauge colossus is not supported in Linux. Can't avoid a standalone box if you want to capture encrypted video from cable or satellite (using component video).

I got so weary of dealing with LMCE telecom that I yanked the ATA out of the LMCE network. Now at least I have a phone that works. I actually bought a second ebay ATA for the day when I try to get LMCE telecom working again.

I've had the same question so I'm watching this with interest. Seems like Honeywell is fairly well integrated, but requires a Vista ICM to integrate. This is no longer made. Prices for them have skyrocketed on eBay. Some users have reported success with DSC (see link), but nothing about it in the wiki.

Just tried snap 885. Awesome work! Much better user experience. The countless hours you spent are greatly appreciated. The only glitch I've found so far is that I can't get serial control of my Denon 3805. Tried to delete and recreate, also tried multiple restarts. Any ideas?

I know patience is required for LMCE and I'm temporarily out.
Phone hasn't worked for over a week.
Wife is seriously pissed - why do we have to use such a complicated system, she asks?
I thought I was making headway - grand plans for video, audio, Insteon, 1-wire, climate, voice reminders, and security. I planned to use all submenus of the orbiter to the fullest. Now the only thing I can do is play videos. I've reinstalled 0810 three times and get the same failure. I've installed 1004 twice and it won't even let me access the web admin.

Picture shows what happens when I select Computing->Webadmin. I looked at network settings and it appears to be unable to use DHCP. In the bottom picture I have just hit "Use DHCP" and it returns a "no". I wanted to see if Asterisk and telecom were working yet, but I can't even get to the configuration screen!

Did a fresh install of 1004, and can't get into webadmin. I tried to access from the orbiter screen and also from KDE desktop. I tried localhost and 192.168.80.1. Anyone have any tips on what to try next?

Last time I tried 1004 asterisk wasn't working. PBX had been removed, and Foxi was trying to make things work again. Is it working now? Perhaps its time to make the switch.

Asterisk was working fine for months, then started behaving erratically. Sometimes it would work, other times it would give the "all circuits are busy now" error on calls out, and "party is not available" error on calls in. I re-installed LMCE 0810 and the errors persist. I checked this morning and the trunk showed registered. It allowed me to make a call, then it unregistered. The /root/var/log/asterisk/full log shows many occurrences of register attempts. Whoever helps me fix this get to add "marriage counselor" to his resume.

When do you see the interface show "registered" in LMCE admin?
Where in the sequence do you plug the sensor/s into the interface adapter?
