I really wish I could fix it, but I lack the knowledge. I am trying to find a local guy who does know how to program so that he can help me tweak a few things in LMCE as well as customizing some other interfaces for windoze. If i can find one we will be happy to fix things and put them up.

I would "grab a c++ book and jump in" however with a full time job, a separate business to run, 2 kids and a wife in full time college along with her full time job; time to learn it is in short supply. Though admittedly it would be a useful skill.

This is a great project but I fear that it is a touch under-manned. It is surprising to me that there are not more people willing to help push this system along because it really does have something over other systems out there. tschak you seem to be the one that most things fall on. Perhaps if you had 8 or 10 more people to help squash bugs, progress would be faster. If I knew a programmer I would point him this way.

no, you are very correct. Best to stay away form the brand new stuff when it comes to chipsets and such. Processors should be fine I think. This is what I have and it all worked OTB.

also using some zwave stuff and have included a MD. I need to update the page. Also an 8800gt seems to work very well.

Did we ever get a permanent fix for this?

It seems to work fine after a reboot, it just won't start after a reload.

Has anyone else experienced the on screen keyboard not working? It comes up but none of the key presses seem to do anything. This is occurring on webpages accessed through the computing menu. I haven't tried it in any of the wizards yet.

Also the feature for setting a timed event like an alarm doesn't seem to be working properly. When I set the tv to come on at a specific time, it comes on but when I try to deactivate the timer through the orbiter interface by clicking on it, it says its off but still comes on. The time is also not adjustable through the orbiter interface as the admin website says it should be.

Dunno if these are isolated incidents with my setup or not.

I have 8.10B originally installed from 4-7 snapshot.

Installation issues / Re: Anyone using a dvi monitor as a display?

This script seems to kick it into standby properly. Now I just need to map it to a remote button or set up a scenario to execute it. Here is where I am having trouble now. I cannot seem to figure out how to execute a script with a scenario.

#!/bin/bash

STATUS=`xset -q | grep "Monitor is" | awk '{print $3}'`

if [ "${STATUS}" = "On" ]
then
sleep 1; xset dpms force off
else
   xset dpms force on
fi
exit 0

Yes, I have had MUCH better luck using the latest snapshots than anything else. Usually the snapshots will install fairly uneventfully, while doing it the other way can sometimes cause severe high blood pressure. The last one that I used was the 4-8 snapshot and I can confirm that it is a very dull and uneventful process. Those are my favorite.

Installation issues / Anyone using a dvi monitor as a display?
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:33:02 pm »
If anyone is using a computer monitor over a DVI connection as a display, I am terribly interested in how you got it working. It displays LMCE and the media fine and seems to be properly setup in the video wizard. I have tried the DPMS monitor template and set the video pipes but I cannot get the display to either turn off or go to standby when I select the display off button in LMCE. The orbiter disappears but the monitor never goes to standby. I unchecked the leave monitor on for display box in the admin website under the orbiter settings and have set the video pipes for the MD.

I also tried enabling DPMS from the KDE desktop. That doesn't seem to work either. I was under the impression that DPMS was more for the VGA connector but when I inquired about the DVI monitor someone referred me to the DPMS template. I am not sure if this is the correct template, but I cannot seem to find the elusive DVI monitor template.

I know that the monitor will support kicking over to standby based on input from the PC (or lack thereof) because I have Ubuntu 8.04LTS installed on the MD HDD, and the function works beautifully with that.

Any help would be most appreciated and thanks in advance!

Josh

as for the snapshots, someone has been nice enough to post updated LMCE install DVD's here: http://linuxmce.iptp.org/snapshots/

Beeker's post is here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9946.0

I had the same issue with xine not playing any of my media. Not sure if there is an easy way to fix it but I was having some other issues as well so I downloaded the 4-8 snapshot and reinstalled. Everything works beautifully on hybrid and MD now. I have been holding off on doing any updates since then though as I have read about some complications.

Sorry it's not an easy fix, but it worked for me. I like the idea that Beeker had about creating an image of your system when it's working, and then when things run amuck you just put that image back on your machine and your up and running an a few minutes.

Installation issues / Re: MD myth setup and dvi monitor

what would happen if I changed the IP of the local backend on the MD to the IP of the master backend on the Hybrid?

Dunno if it will cause instability or not but I tried it. I can watch the channel that is currently playing but it won't let me change the channel from the guide. That may not really be the best fix but at least I know that the frontend is working on the md.

OK, I answered this before I even finished the post.

It will cause mythtv to become angry and abduct your cat. don't do that.

I had to go to KDE desktop and run mythtv-setup as root, I then found that the settings were corrected. closed that out and went back to LMCE. Tried mythtv and everything works on the MD and on the hybrid. Kick Ass!

Now there is just the monitor issue. I added a dpms monitor and used the drop down lists to do the video pipe, so that is squared away. The remaining issue is that it still will not either turn the monitor off or send it to stand by when I hit the "power of display" button.

Any ideas on that one would be of great help!

not sure how to handle adding a card from the hybrid on the md manually. When I tried it didn't detect any. Im not sure of the path to the hybrid, would it be an IP then the location of the card as listed on the hybrid? Im on irc if you should stop by.

I would be happy if there was something that would terminate the signal going to the monitor. That will send the monitor into standby, which is more than fine. I was looking for the template because I am using an lcd monitor as a tv for this MD. I plugged it in with a dvi cable and I cannot seem to get it to switch off or over to standby. Kubuntu, ubuntu etc have no problem with it, I guess I am just not sure how to handle it in LMCE. I posted details about it here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9973.0

Thanks for your help and quick reply.

merkur2k,

I cannot find that DVI monitor template, is there any way that you could point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Installation issues / MD myth setup and dvi monitor (half solved)
« on: April 16, 2010, 09:54:45 am »
I have been playing with LinuxMCE of a bit and decided to try out a MD in the master bedroom. The first time I tried I forgot to run the diskless setup script. That ended up in some squirrely results. So I started over with a fresh hybrid install with the 4-8-10 install dvd image and got everything working. Ran the diskless script, then booted the MD. After going through the AVwizard and setup wizard, everything looks pretty good with the exception of myth and my video pipes.

Myth setup seems to have what I would think were the correct settings in it already, the master backend IP is 192.168.80.1 etc. When I try to run myth the screen flashes into the myth frontend display for a second and then goes black and sticks. I think the problem may be that there is a backend installed on the MD. The IP of the MD is listed in the setup section accessed from the computing screen as the local backend. Is it possible that it is trying to connect to the local backend and not the master backend? I don't have any capture cards installed in the MD, and have one pvr250 installed on the master. Are there settings that I have to tweak anywhere in myth setup on the MD or should things be set correctly during the MD's creation? Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated. From what I have read the frontend should pretty much work as long as the versions of myth are similar and it is put on the same subnet as the master backend. Obviously I am missing something.

Now my video pipe issue. I am using a sceptre 24 inch LCD monitor over a DVI cable for the display and I just plugged in some 2.1 computer speakers for the sound. The sound seems to be fine but I seem to be having issues with the display. I want the MD to turn off the monitor after it is finished playing whatever media, or at least when I tell it to turn off the display. I have unchecked the "leave monitor on for OSD" block in the onscreen orbiter section of the admin website, however I cannot get that monitor into the pipes so that it will turn it off. I searched the forums and found a posting here: http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=8794.0 which mentions a dvi monitor template being added however I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone know if that template was named something other than generic monitor or dvi monitor?

I tried the DPMS monitor template and added the AV device. However when I went to the connection wizard it would not allow me to draw the video pipe. I then thought that maybe I could put a DVI port on the dpms monitor and try that. That allowed me to draw the video pipe however it would not allow me to press the update button. Next I tried the projector template, but it would not allow me to press the update button either. This was one of the issues I was having on the last install and I thought it was just a huccup.

Thanks,
Josh

Edit: I guess I should clarify, LinuxMCE does not nessisarily have to turn off the monitor, it could simply cut the signal going to it which would kick it into standby. That would be great. Would be just like when your pc turns your screen off due to inactivity. Problem is I am not sure how to implement whatever that command is into LinuxMCE and make it work like it should.

Thanks again
Josh
