Users / Re: support for nvidia GT 430 (SOLVED)
« on: March 11, 2011, 02:44:07 am »
Thank you Posde and Richard,

Finally GT 430 is working on my MD.

Thanks Richard, Alsa script was useful although I had to follow the wiki for dual sound card since Nvidia has its own sound card on it.

One way or other,, for now GT 430 is working with latest nvidia driver. I do not know what trouble I would face by playing with script. we will see.

Thanks again.  ;)

thanks for the reply.

some dev helped me on lirc , according to them, I can manually install 260 on md. the problem is I am unable to kill the X server on MD to run the installer (downloaded from nvidia's website).

I dont know how to init 3

chroot /usr/pluto/diskless/## giving me scary warning...and asking me to use init 3

According to one  , I will replace with only exit 0 in it on My MD. Question is, will it break my install? what problem I will face down the road by modifying that script?

thanks again.

Users / support for nvidia GT 430 (SOLVED)
« on: March 10, 2011, 03:50:28 am »
This is probably asking too much at a time when developers are busy for 10.04.
I just purchased a card since I got a decent deal on and the card is GT 430 with 1gig ddr3 ram. here is my stupid questions,

I am still running 8.10 and the max nvidia driver supported is 195 glx
When I check nvidia website, i think the card I got will not or might not properly work with 195 as nothing says on their website.

I it possible I can manually install 260 driver on my MD? If yes, I think I also need to edit the script under /usr/pluto/bin so that I does not look for 195. I am not sure but thats my understanding.

I do not want to bother developers on channel just for my case.

I hope someone will guide me here to get my one and only MD working. Why did I buy 430 , because , I tried 210 which made little too noise, I tried 240 it worked like charm but putting just 10$ more I got 430 which could be little future proof. Please help me to get my little puppy working,

Thanking in advance,

take care.

I hope I am not too late to reply you,

But I would suggest to go for xfs format for media.

I know someone had it, and he had hard time to set it up.

Build your own, with zotac mini itx board and compatible case. Good luck.

« on: February 17, 2011, 05:45:39 pm »
I have been digging into properly setting the aspect ratio for my LED HDTV from samsung as well. The only problem I am facing is the firefox browser menu fonts are huge. and so does the KDE desktop fonts are huge.

What I found a temperory solution is go to KDE desktop and under appearance settings ----> fonts you need to set the dpi settings for the fonts.

Now coming back to the resolution , I found an article on some other forum,

I know some people here do not like xbmc, I am not favoring them but we can use their/ubuntu's guide.

in these steps the difference would be some command should be according to our system, for example killing the xbmc live ,, i think ours will be kill the startx and then move on,,

Perhaps , a dev can come out with exact steps and this could be a great how to... for our wiki.

Thank you.

Installation issues / Re: After AV Wizard i get grey screen
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:38:03 pm »
It depends on what type of graphic card do you have on the machine. If you have Nvidia anything above 7200 series will handle UI2 with alpha blending just fine. If you have intel on board,, I would go with simplest option.

Hope that helps,, please dont forget again the rule # 1 :)

Hello there,

I can understand your concerened how ever Linuxmce is very powerful system so please give it some time to built. Remember rule # 1 is be Patient. The system must be downloading and installing on back ground without anything on screen, leave it alone. have a cup of coffee and come back. All depends on your internet speed and hardware. Hope that helps.

Take it easy.

Users / Hulu not working_help please (SOLVED)
« on: January 17, 2011, 08:06:54 pm »
okey I am afraid to ask for the support since I have installed flash manually.

I setup Lmce from snapshot 23589. create and MD image and saw that youtube was missing flash player. so I downloaded installer.deb from adobe on MD's desktop. ssh into MD and ran dpkg -i installer.deb and I got my youtube videos working.

after that I installed Hulu follwoing wiki's instructions from MD's software module edit tab.

Now when clicking hulu from orbiter , I have a message saying

"version 0.9.8 is now available."

Hope someone helps.

Thank you.

I would go still cheap on Motherboard,

you do not need Nvidia,, use onboard video chipset specially if the core is going tobe in closet.

Look for more pci slots on the motherboard.

its just my two cents.

(these steps are assuming that your core doesn't need the r8169 driver

First, go to and download the 8.020.00 driver source (dated 11/15/2010). Then transfer this file to / on your core.

Next, ssh into the core:
- Become super user
Code: [Select]
sudo su
Check whether the built-in driver, r8169.ko is installed.
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep r8169

If it is installed (the command above will give you an indication), you will have to follow the r8168 wiki to download the kernel sources and apply a patch. Otherwise, continue on...

- Lets go to the driver source you placed in /
Code: [Select]
cd /

- Extract the sources, then cd into the source folder
Code: [Select]
tar -jxf r8168-8.020.00.tar.bz2
cd r8168-8.020.00

- Compile the sources
Code: [Select]
- Install the driver module
add a new line at the bottom of /etc/initramfs-tools-interactor/modules, then save:
Code: [Select]
vim /etc/initramfs-tools-interactor/modulesadd the following line at the bottom:
Code: [Select]
r8168then exit vim (:wq)

Code: [Select]
make install
depmod -a
modprobe r8168

- Make the MD ramdisk boot image
Code: [Select]

Now you should be able to boot the MD - you'll know its working when you see "We have announced ourselves to the router" and the diskless setup runs (you should also at this time see a new Media Director in the web admin).
When the diskless setup is finished, the MD will reboot - but again it will fail with a kernel panic (the new diskless filesystem does not yet have the r8168 module, so lets fix that)...

Code: [Select]
cp /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8168.ko /usr/pluto/diskless/<MD#>/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8168.ko(make sure you replace <MD#> with the device number of your new MD - you can see this in the web admin)
(also note that your kernel version in the path could be different, change it as needed for your installation)

You need to activate the module in 2 places now, using vim:
Code: [Select]
vim /usr/pluto/diskless/<MD#>/etc/modulesand
Code: [Select]
vim /usr/pluto/diskless/<MD#>/etc/initramfs-tools/modules(Again, replace <MD#> with your actual MD device number)
add the following to the end of both above files:
Code: [Select]
Now just recreate the ramdisk IN THE MD (via chroot)
Code: [Select]
cd /usr/pluto/diskless/
chroot <MD#>
cd /boot
mkinitramfs -o initrd.img-`uname -r` `uname -r`

Finally, lets clean up our mess from building the driver:
Code: [Select]
rm -r /r8168-8.020.00
rm /r8168-8.020.00.tar.bz2

Now reboot, and you should come up to the A/V wizard and you're done

Thank you so much,, I am actually printing out your post for my all good reference,, how ever lets assume that I have r8169 module installed already on my core, Again,, on the wiki following line I dont seem to understand,

This part is only required if you actually need the r8169 to be in the kernel at the same time as the new r8168 module. You may not need this if your MD has only one r8168 compatible NIC. If so, just move the r8169.ko file out of /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ prior to generating the new file, and that module will not be included in the new image.

Also,, hacking the r8169 instructions,, all need to be as super user?

let me know,, Agains thanks a lot.

ok, I got it..  I had to run
Code: [Select]
depmod -a
modprobe r8168
before running

Its now booting

would you please give me the steps you followed one by one,, I dont seem to understand the unrecognized NIC wiki at all. I would highly appreciate.  Thanks.

Users / Re: supported NIC for netboot
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:14:18 pm »
The motherboard is MSI  model : G31TM-P21.

It has got realtek r8169 module on it.  Used to net boot out of the box when I had snapshot 23333.  The system died for no reason after update && upgrade. So I changed my hard drive, and installed 23559. the installation went fine except few problems. but the net boot never worked. I tried a Lot, and perhaps you are right, I thought r8168 is not enough , so I followed the wiki that says to hack r8169. That route is scary, and I was stuck in between where there is something to create the patch. Who ever wrote that wiki,,

My questions is,, those commands need sudo or not ?

some times the command "make" is recommaned without sudo and sometimes it needs. So I am damm confused. On top of it. There is no information to revert the changes if the issue is not resolved.
