Ah.  Okay.  It does on my core.  Pulse may be configured for per user mode on the mds.

J.

/etc/pulse/daemon.conf doesn't exist on my core either!

Installation issues / Re: New build Hardware
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:38:12 pm »
Thanks Thom.

Looking to just build a "core server" with no display as it will just be sitting in the basement comm room.

I will remove the Gigabyte video card and use the one on the motherboard which is an nVidia C51PVG.

As a beginner, I would recommend leaving your core as a hybrid, at least for now. True most things can be done remotely, however sometimes I find it is really useful to have a physical screen, especially when it's early days. The MD part really doesn't use up that much resource if it's just sat there doing nothing.

(Also handy for doing Clonezilla disk image backups - an absolute life-saver!).

I am using an ATI card in my core (because I had one). As Thom says, nVidia really is the best bet, but where I am using it purely as a "service screen" if you like, you can get away with lots of other types of card providing you used UI1 (the first option in the AV wizard, the non-fancy one). No it doesn't look nice, sometimes the screen resolution does funny things, sometimes it appears matchbox size.... but I don't care.

Cheers,
Matt.

This is why people can make their own skins. ;)

I was dipping my oar in regarding the qOrbiter guts really, but you do make a good point, perhaps I will.  :)

Cheers,
Matt.

You got it. Different screen sizes correlated to form factors when i started, and just shrinking the UI doesn't work in many cases, you have to re-lay the whole thing out. So that's why im trying to provide ui's for different form factors. not to mention the concept of rotation on the device itself and how that affects the ui. This is why you come across really small text in some places and over-sized things in others. Lucky for me, these things are all governed in one place :)

So now, another diversion to update the form factor code because its no longer engineering eyes only so to speak.

Interesting. Tell me to mind my own business, but...

In a world where resolutions on phones are getting bigger and bigger, and the phones themselves are getting bigger (these silly "phablets" for example), and then there's 7" tablets which I can barely use for anything and would clearly benefit from a 'small screen style' skin, how on Earth are you going to keep up with it?

Perhaps a skin that is too small and fiddly for a ham-fisted person with sausages for fingers to use effectively, is absolutely fine for another. Could the skin names themselves state whether they are for large screen, small screen, high res, small hands, etc etc, and then the user chooses?

Anyway, just an off the cuff thought, obviously it's entirely up to you!

Cheers,
Matt.

Once your initial tests have come to a close, I would also like to volunteer for any subsequent work. Perhaps I could do Europe.

Matt.

That's good to know, was just wondering. Yeah I've got the QT5 version on my phone.

So is the idea for detecting whether it's a phone or a tablet purely from the point of view of defaulting to an appropriate skin? And certain skins lend themselves better to certain screen sizes?

Cheers,
Matt.

Gotcha. So why is my screenshot different to Hackit2me's?

Using the setupQorbiter script (a couple of minutes ago) I didn't even get an android folder. However once I had created one, and moved the contents of skins into it, the orbiter loads up, see attached.

Strangely, at no point was I asked to enter a device number? Is that normal? Could this be as a result of having installed the Qt4 version previously - is it remembering that setting?

Cheers,
Matt.

Installation issues / Re: Best download location
« on: August 25, 2013, 02:43:50 pm »
is http://linuxmce.iptp.org/snapshots/ the best place to get the latest builds of lmce? I have downloaded it twice, burnt to a DVD at different speeds but half way thru the install it fails saying my that either the image I am using is bad or my hard drive is faulty (can't remember the exact verbiage). I have tried it on two different hard drives, 2 different PCs, and 2 different dvds burnt at low speeds.

Thanks

Why are you downloading snapshots? The wiki main page points you towards the final release.

Cheers,
Matt.

Try this:

edit the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and set "flat-volumes = no", reboot.  Let me know if that has any effect.

J.

I actually went to try this first, thinking it was a Pulse Audio issue... but was straight away thwarted when I found that daemon.conf didn't exist.

Matt.

I just removed my TV (connected to the first MD, living room) in LMCE admin, reboot and then set it up again from scratch so there was an audio pipe in place.

Same issue, volume jumps up to 100% according to alsamixer. However, pressing the volume doesn't bang it back down again (not surprising, as the volume buttons are controlling the TV due to the audio pipe, right?).

I then removed the audio pipe as per my normal setup, and same issue.

Cheers,
Matt.

Volume commands are not being ignored. When the volume jumps up to 100% when media is played, and then pressing a volume button brings it back down again. Then, the volume buttons are working normally.

No audio pipes. The first MD has the amp coming off the soundcard (i.e. analogue). The second MD is the same (i.e. analogue), as it's just a monitor with built-in speakers.

Cheers,
Matt.

Nope, sorry should have said I rebuilt it. The first MD was rebuilt as part of that dist-upgrade issue. Had the same dist-upgrade issue with the MD I'm talking about now, but that's neither here nor there, I wanted to rebuild it anyway to see if it sorted the volume issue, and it didn't. To summarise:

MD without upgrade or rebuild - no volume issue.
MD upgraded (with those pluto errors), no rebuild - has the volume issue.
Rebuilt and re-upgraded (solving pluto errors) - has the volume issue.

Consistent with both MDs.

FYI I have another MD which is identical hardware-wise to the first one, which I haven't yet upgraded and doesn't have the issue, just in case it's useful for any troubleshooting.

Cheers,
Matt.

I upgraded another MD (slightly different hardware, it has an nVidia onboard soundcard as opposed to intel) to see if it would have the same issue, and it does. Probably doesn't help, but there it is.

Cheers,
Matt.

Thom... what is this "Android Orbiter" of which you speak?
As far as I was aware, you have two choices on an Android device - Qorbiter (in development) and Web Orbiter 2.0? Android Orbiter? Where do I find it and how do I install it?

I've updated the wiki pages to make it a little bit clearer
