Users / Re: NAS - FreeNAS, LMCE or something else?
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:21:13 am »
I have recently gone centralised with my data and I haven't looked back. Big hard drives in a D-link NAS making up the primary storage, and then I have a second D-link NAS which is effectively a clone.

The 2nd NAS is set up to not show its content in LMCE. Also I wouldn't go near a RAID setup, I have never liked the idea of data being automatically mirrored, also every time I read about RAID it's usually in the context of somebody having issues with it. I use rsync like possy says to backup, run by a cronjob. This way you can decided which folders are backed up incrementally, which ones are mirrored, etc.

Like you I didn't want to back up all of my movies. However a nice compromise is to have the cronjob also run "ls" on the directory in question and put the output into a text file with a date stamp. That way if the hard drive goes down, I at least have a list of what I had.

Cheers,
Matt.

I really don't know, if it would be helpful I can check to see if it's vfat, but you'll have to tell me how.

Matt.

Otherwise everything is working as it should?

A quick google points towards possible issues with the plymouth modules, so you could try removing those (obviously I have no idea whether this is safe in this situation, do so at your own risk, but from what I understand it's to do with splashscreens).

The module r8169 refers to your network, so I don't know if that gives you any clues. Are you using your joggler wireless or wired?

Cheers,
Matt.

Which part specifically is giving that issue? Did you replace the sources.list as instructed? Are you running the commands as root?

Cheers,
Matt.

I like jogglers. I am using some as standalone orbiters, others as orbiters/squeezeslave entertainment zones. Can be used wired or wireless. The speakers on them are surprisingly good. WAF is high, she has one in her sewing room which she uses for audio, internet radio, etc.

Wiki instructions are fine, although I did have one issue http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=13464.msg98344#msg98344

Have you considered a faulty switch?

Looks like I'll be upgrading then. 2.2 is the highest official version supported. Is there anything that I should look out for when doing a custom build? It looks like CyanogenMod is a popular choice.

I've run loads of custom ROMs. Some are good, some are bad. Get an old/and or small SD card, backup your current ROM, and then try a couple out. I have no experience of your phone, but on many it's very straight forward to install them. You need to do you research though, just to make sure there's nothing involved that could potentially brick it.

I've recently moved to a CyanogenMod ROM and I really like it. It's not the "official" version as that one was too old (I wanted Jelly Bean), but it is a "stable" version and I've not had any problems. I think it's a safe option. In the past I have used ROMs based on CM, and others that are nothing to do with it, all with vary degrees of success. Have a play.

This would be a good place to start http://alchemistar.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/samsung-vibrant-custom-rom-list-1110.html

I also don't see myself using anything other than  the built in TV speakers for audio.

I'm no audiophile, but I ended up getting separate speakers/amp for my living room, as we probably listen to music/radio more than we watch tele, this means we can use the speakers without switching the TV on. And I have to say, even I appreciated the difference in sound quality. Very minor point, but perhaps something to consider.

Matt.

Those USB sound cards are just a very cheap and easy way of adding audio zones, and you control it like you would an MD. I have one for my bathroom speakers, one for my garden speakers, and one for my guitar amp. They are brilliant considering it means you can do away with an entire MD and its associated gubbins if audio is all you need.

I don't use Pandora (not sure I really know what it is), but why don't you have a look at adding some internet radio stations and playing those through your new USB sound card.

Matt.

The Startech Virtual 7.1 USB Audio Adapter (model No. ICUSBAUD107) works a treat.

Not speaking from experience here so I might be wrong, but I understand it is difficult to sync audio zones (if that's something you require).

This looks really nice (assuming you don't need a disk drive, although you could always conceal an external one somewhere), but would I be right in saying that he might have issues with the graphics if using 0810?

EDIT: D'oh I meant 1004! Who's using 0810?!

Matt.

Installation issues / Re: PXE boot MD

Right, I forgot about the gPXE boot CD/USB/Bootfloppy :)

-Thom

I was very pleased first time I got that working! Even the ancient hearing-aid-beige equipment with no PXE capability can be transformed into an MD. Not very aesthetic for the living room, but perfect for the workshop!

If not available, I have had success with rom-o-matic/gPXE disks rom-o-matic.net

Or have a play with a VirtualBox.

Matt.

The wiki is the best place for information (both the main wiki and the user pages), i.e. what equipment works, how to set it up, recommended inclusion remotes, etc. If you have any general enquires or initial questions, then just ask them on this thread. If you have a more major problem or specific issue then it might be worth starting a new thread in the Users section.

Matt.

Cool, glad it's sorted.

I've never tried RAID, more of a rsync/cronjob man myself, as you can customise the command for different folders, mirror, delete options, etc.

Cheers,
Matt.
