Users / Joggler orbiter tinkering
« on: March 29, 2013, 02:20:47 pm »
I am experimenting with running an orbiter on my joggler running UNR, using Foxi's wiki page as a guide http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Joggler#Create_directory_structure

I am trying to...

Code: [Select]
chown -R joggler:joggler /usr/pluto
chown -R joggler:joggler /var/log/pluto

...on the core, but it is giving me the error:

Code: [Select]
chown: invalid user: `joggler:joggler'
Have attempted to create the group "joggler" with "groupadd -f joggler", but no joy. I also tried creating the user "joggler" as I could not see it listed in /etc/passwd, but it asks for a new password of course, and didn't know what to put.

Am I right in saying the user "joggler" and the group "joggler" need to exist, or have I misunderstood the chown command?

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Problem with channel/input switching for Games Console
« on: March 13, 2013, 01:45:10 pm »
My setup hasn't changed - LG TV controlled via RS232. I swear I used to just add "Games Console" to A/V Devices, set up the pipes in the wizard, and then pressing the resulting scenario would change the TV input to AV1 (for example) and I could alter the volume etc. But this doesn't seem to work now.

The TV onscreen orbiter changes to black squares, the mobile orbiter displays the correct controls, but the TV input does not change over. Have I forgotten something?

I did try changing the entry for /dev/tty (default is 'please select'), but all that did is stop the TV from working.

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Safely removing mythtv
« on: February 03, 2013, 11:46:52 am »
Hello all,

In order to completely remove mythv, can I safely...

Code: [Select]
apt-get --purge remove myth* ?

If so, is there anything else associated with watching TV that I can safely remove?

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Using a camera with composite
« on: July 16, 2012, 10:57:08 am »
There doesn't seem to be much information on this, unless I am searching the wrong things.

What's the best way to integrate composite cameras into your LMCE system?

I see this capture card is supported http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-PVR-USB2

....but I don't want to use the camera with myth - ideally I would like a scenario alongside my other security scenarios. Can it be added in this way, or is it myth only?

I am not in pocession of any capture card, so I am open to any other capture card suggestions! I have seen various mentions of the EasyCap as well (even if it does sound like female contraceptive).

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Remotely ssh into a machine behind LMCE router
« on: June 13, 2012, 12:56:17 pm »
Have spent a lot of time researching this, and am struggling to sort fact from fiction, so thought I would ask my friends at LMCE.

I can ssh into my core using my no-ip IP address no problem, and I can ssh into my desktop from there (which sits on the internal LMCE network).

What I would like to do is remotely ssh into the desktop directly. I undertand this involves me forwarding ports on the router, but I am struggling to put the theory into context.

Could anybody tell me what I have to do to set this up in web admin, and the ssh command I would have to issue? I think I just need a real example to get my head round this.

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Audio zone approach - which is best?
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:53:52 am »
I have two approaches in my head, and I don't know which one would be best.

I want some speakers in the garden and in the bathroom, which will require an amp of course. The amps I am looking at are just a cheapo low-power 2 channel things - I am not interested in rinsing hundreds of pounds on uber Denon rs232 controlled amps. So which is best...

1. Squeezeslave USB sound cards on the core, with the amps ALWAYS on waiting to be used. How much energy does an amp use when it is on, but nothing is playing? Is it recommended/safe?

2. Cheapo Atom boards for each zone, with the amp being powered off the PSU, meaning it will switch on and off when the mobo is switched on and off. Overkill? Or brilliant? Less energy usage, if a little bit more expensive?

I am leaning towards 2, it will work out cheaper than a squeezebox (or there won't be a lot in it at least). Or is there another approach that I may have missed?

Cheers,
Matt.

I have 2 of these for sale, perfect working order, only selling because I have moved to an area where DVB-T reception is not good and have decided to either look at freesat, or not bother at all (and read a book).

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Hauppauge_WinTV-NOVA-T-500

These are £60 new, so let's say £35 each (including p+p)

Matt.

Users / 10.04 + squeezeslave + Startech ICUSBAUD107 woes
« on: June 02, 2012, 06:42:03 pm »
I have followed these instructions to the letter (core only, adapter is plugged into the core) http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Squeezeslave_on_the_core

The only "extra" thing that I did (in that it's not spelt out to you to do it) was to put the MAC address in under the device in web admin on the A/V Equipment page. I assumed this was necessary.

Everything seemed to work perfectly; the adapter is showing under "lsusb", squeezeslave is definitely running. "squeezeslave -L" showed the adapter (but now that I have restarted, it is no longer there, is that normal?)

Anyway I get this message in the orbiter when I try to play a track...

"I cannot play this media. Perhaps there is not a valid device in this entertainment area capable of playing it."

And this was in /var/log/squeezeslave.log

I am back with Vonage for our VOIP. It does not integrate with LMCE in any way, but it works. It is advertised as "not for nerds" (you can't even use an IP phone) which obviously is not what we want, but SWMBO is happy with it. I will explore other VOIP providers that WILL integrate with LMCE in due course, but for now we are sticking with Vonage.

The problem: When there are torrents or other downloads running, all priority is given to the downloads, which ruins the call quality if the phone is in use. Is there any way to dedicate bandwidth to the Vonage box when it needs it?

By the way, Vonage have changed their box since I was last with them. You are supposed to plug it directly into the Internet, but I have not done this. I understand this is a HUGE no-no in the world of LMCE, but maybe this problem would go away if I did set it up like that. I just don't want to over-complicate things for when I start looking at other VOIP providers. Maybe I will try it in the name of science, just to see what IP the Vonage box spits out.

Cheers,
Matt.

Users / Switch an old valve amp on and off as required
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:46:51 pm »
I was looking at some old valve amps with the aim of using them with LMCE. I was thinking use it with a z-wave plug adapter like this http://www.uk-automation.co.uk/products/Z-Wave-Appliance-plug-by-Everspring.html

My question, is what would be the best way to set up LMCE to turn it on and off? Obviously I want it to come on when it's needed (TV, audio, videos), but switch off after a period of time when not in use. Is this feasible?

Cheers,
Matt.

I am seriously considering moving to freesat at my new place (I'm in the UK).

1. Does freesat still have multiplexes like with freeview? If so, how many? Can one tuner handle all the viewing/recording of all the channels on a given multiplex? (I will be using myth).

2. What DVB-S2 card is best to use? I am currently on 1004, will be using myth, don't mind if it's PCI or PCIe. Less keen on USB, but fine with it if it's known to be working.

3. Once I understand the above, the next question is how many tuners, and how does that impact which dish I choose? Currently I use 4 tuners for freeview, but I think I could probably get away with 2, I record so much crap that I never ever watch.

Cheers,
Matt.

Every now and again, whatever it is I'm watching flicks to another channel. Then as you cycle through the channels in myth (in an attempt to get back to what you were watching), it quickly becomes apparent that only channels from one multiplex are available - it's like the channels from other multiplexes were never even there. It's not always the same multiplex when it happens.

I have no idea whether this is related, but when I look at the backend status, it shows 40 encoders! I only have two dual tuners, so 4 tuners in total (nova-T-500s). Furthermore, when I first installed, and this happened in 810 as well, the card was detected 17 or 18 times (i just added the first 4, and then ignored the rest). Again, no idea if this is related, never caused a problem before.

Any ideas? I read that doing a "delete all" on the video sources solves the "many encoders" issue, but it hasn't worked for me.

Cheers,
Matt.

I seem to remember discussing this with Thom some time ago, and if my memory serves me correctly, he said that the white blotches that sometimes crop up in the dark patches were due to a crash associated with the nVidia graphics (this is a ASUS AT3IONT nVidia ION with atom mobo, by the way). I also get a thin white horizontal line running across all the buttons (which I haven't seen before), although I guess that is because there was a black line as part of the button graphic.

Anyway, I'm starting to see this daily now (MD needs resetting to fix), and just wondered if anybody else had seen it? I THINK it happens when I use myth. I am wondering if it is something to do with the playback profile I have selected - VDPAU High Quality. What do other VDPAU users use as their playback profile in myth?

And I have I got the right options set in web admin? I've selected "auto" for Hardware Acceleration, and "vdpau" for Deinterlace Quality.

Cheers,
Matt.

Any ideas? Used exactly the same installation procedure as with 810, which always worked well. Nothing appears to be out of the ordinary, Hauppage Nova-T-500 detected without issues seemingly, myth just doesn't find/insert any channels after the initial scan. Antenna feed is working.

The 1004 experience has been a pleasant one so far though! (apart from this)

Cheers,
Matt.

Chaps,

My system is just about becoming operational, and I noticed that when watching TV, there is no longer the qwerty keyboard of days gone by, which is great! However...

How do you set your recordings? I used to highlight the program in the guide, and press "r", which obviously can't be done any more.

Of course this could be done via mythweb from a computer, or using a keyboard on the MD, but I just wondered if I was missing a trick with the touchscreen orbiter.

Incidentally, what's going to happen with the big blank space, looks like something exciting should be there :) Will the guide be appearing here?

Cheers,
Matt.
