Users / old hardware died.... new options
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:44:25 am »
Hi All,

Have been away for a while...been spending time with the new additions to the family and have had no time to tinker.... let alone sleep!!!

my existing core has died terminally.... so i a am considering a new core.....

I am looking at a i5 2600k processor, G-B P67A-UD3B3 mainboard, ram etc....

I reviewed hardware and there is nothing comparible... at the time of writing this...

I am and will be happy to add this to the wiki, but would like thoughts from others before i outlay the $$

In terms of specs of the GB mb....it appears to have the features that would be suitable for a core.

I already have a dual dvb-t card(haupage nova t-500) that will work in both vdr(preffered) as well as mythtv...

So my question is would this be suitable as a core?

OR is there other options that anyone would suggest?........keep in mind that i am in australia.... so if there are au lmce users or anyone who could add comments please do... i will be documenting this as i go along and will be happy to add comments from au users..

TIA

Installation issues / motherboard dead - 7.10
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:20:41 am »
Hi All,

I was only commenting on the forum earlier regarding upgrading to 8.10 and the fact that i can't get 8.10 running.. i swapped my working 7.10 HDD back into my core and booted it up.... all good - i went away and came back about an hour later and the core was off. I tried to reboot - no good... completely dead. Swapped the PSU and still no luck...... my dilema is as follows

Can i put a new motherboard into the machine and do a 'repair' on the existing install??? If so how do i go about it ?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Installation issues / MediaGate products as MD's
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:23:10 am »
Hi All,

I did a search through the wiki and the forums and could not find anything on the Media gate products and whether they are suitable as Md's.

Is anyone using them or tried to use them as MD's ?

TIA

Users / AU Linuxmce users

Hi all,

I am just curious - which do you use - VDR or MtyhTV and why.

I did use Mythtv originally and it worked ok - but i could never get the channel guide to work properly and when it did work it was patchy.

I setup VDR and after some minor tinkering it has been working perfectly.

I am currently looking into rebuilding my install as i have a new grunty machine to play with as part of a virtualisation topic that i have posted and i wanted to get peoples thoughts.

Users / virtualisation - which is better windows or linux
« on: December 13, 2009, 06:59:26 am »
Hi All,

I have been lucky enough to acquire a machine which has dual socket 771 (2.8Ghz Quad core Xeons, 16GB ECC RAM, quad GB NICS). Now the question i have is as follows..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am looking to virtualize linuxmce - what underlying os is better, windows XP/7 64 bit or Linux (ie ubuntu, Fedora)?

In terms of storage capacity it has 3TB on board and the SAS box that i scored with it has dual Fibre cards and the storage array has 16 TB....

Any thoughts on O/S and what virutalisation software to run? I use vmware for several things currently and also started playting with virtualbox in a windows environment .

I realise there has been questions and info posted in the wiki - but i want to do this right the first time as i have several environments that need to be virtualised.

As always thanks in advance to all.

Users / Problems with DVB-t in australia
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:57:14 am »
I know this is a simple fix and i suspect some of the AU linuxmce users have come across this before and have resolved it.

Basically - i can view all my DVB-t channels in brisbane on my server (7.10) but for some reason my MD's seem to want to point to german channels.

I have reloaded the VDR protocols from scratch and have re scanned the channels with the same result. I even rebuit a md from scratch and i got the program information (ie what was on when) but there was still no live tv...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Users / external nas versus internal raid
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:52:55 am »
Hi All,

I have been away and noticed that 8.10 beta is up and running and from what i can read some exceptional work has been done by everyone.

My question is as follows - i run 7.10 with an external QNAP NAS system and it has worked well until recently. I have started to notice that the cpu usage within the nas dashboard has been at 100% consistently. If i take it out of the linuxmce envrionment and run it under windows the cpu utilisation drops to only 5%. When i reconnect it - the cpu utilisation climbs back up to 95% and as soon as i try run media from it we go back to 100%. I have done all the firmware updates for the QNAP nas and as far as i can tell it seems to be something within linuxmce. Has anyone come across this and if so is it easy to resolve?

Alternatively i was contemplating rebuilding everything under 8.10 and instead of using the external nas i was contemplating throwing in a couple of TB drives for my media and run it directly from the server only.

If this has been posted please direct me to the link.

As always thanks in advance

Users / LG u990 mobile phone
« on: November 01, 2008, 07:35:12 am »
Hi All,

I am trying to connect my phone via BT and i have the correct address and it just does not want to see it . My old nokia worked fine but the new lg is discovered but the md just never seems to be able to send the app to the mobile. If i connect the BT donlge to the windows box it works perfectly. Similalry if i go into kbuntu and tell the BT app to find the mobile it works perfectly and i can transfer stuff back and forth with no issue. It appears linuxmce does not like this phone. I have tried all the options in the gui (symbion, etc)

Any suggestions on what i need to do ?

Users / Template library
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:43:13 pm »
Hi All,

Is it possible to export my device templates?
The reason i ask is - lets say i get a universal LG interface going for all models, rather than users having to create one they could simply download it from a central location (ie wiki) and just change a few settings once it has been loaded ?

If i then wanted to setup say certain X10 controls - i could download them from the central location and 'plug them in' so to speak.

I know that it is fairly straight forward to setup devices via the interfaces we have - it was more an idea of having it for newbies.

It would also be interesting in having a region specific set of templates - ie australia - us, uk. The purpose behind that is that the users here in australia can use VDR and why not have it loaded as a standard package either during install or by downloading a region specific package. I realise this is problably not straight forward - but i thought i would add it as something that might be of interest to others down the track.

Users / LG 32LC7D setup issues
« on: October 15, 2008, 01:58:26 am »
Hi All,

I have several different LG units here at work that have been left for repair and the customer doesn't ever come back and i took a LG 32LC7D LCDTV home and have tried to set it up without success. I have followed the example on the Wiki (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LG_42LB5D) and have not had an issue till i got to here.

Adding device
This is a simple process that you can now add via the LinuxMCE Admin Website at Wizard > A/V Equipment

Add device based on created template
Just search for the device template that you created and select it from the list

Specify COM port for it
Just tell LinuxMCE which com port to use.

I can select the device from the template and select the template. The next step is where i come unstuck - Where do i specify which com port to use as i don't get this option. It just goes back to the previous screen - ie AV equipment.

Have i forgotten to do something ?

2nd Thing - I also notice when i am in LMCE it tries to detect it as a 20LC something. I tried to use this and i get the usual video wizard and when it asks me to specify a port there is just a blank window. I tell it to finish and it wants to reload router and rebuild/reconfigure the orbitor and once this has completed it goes back to the same window.

Any thoughts would be great.

Installation issues / VDR not working at all
« on: August 31, 2008, 09:26:53 am »
Hi All,

I tried to setup VDR and went through several different examples including this link.
* http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/VDR

I get all the way through the example and everything goes through perfectly, except that when i try and watch live TV in the manner it suggests - i get a no signal message on the screen and that is it.

I then opened the VDR admin site and tried to see whether i get a picture - again no picture.  If i do a clean install on my core and try to use mythtv it works perfectly.

I use the nova-T 500 card and it works beautifully under mythtv. I just want to try VDR and compare the 2.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing it not to work for me as i can't see why it should not work.

TIA
Justin

Installation issues / Ripping DVD errors
« on: August 23, 2008, 02:05:46 am »
Hi All,

I have tried to rip several different DVD's from my collection via the core and on all occassions it tells me that there are errors with my disc and that it could take anywhere up to a day to complete This happens at between 1 & 2 % completion. i thought this was a problem with some of my discs and after trying another 15 and running into the same problem - i had to rule out my discs being the issue. I decided to replace the DVD drive with one out of another unit. SAme problem. I went and bought a new SATA DVDRW and tried again and managed to get past a few percent before it went into the same error message again.

I have also left one in there for almost 24hrs and it has only managed to get to 16%.

I checked that the correct DVD ripping software and the correct version ie W64DVDCSS.

I can use the DVD drive in a windows machine and can quite happily burn or copy information back and forth without error.

I don't know what else to try and would be greatfull for anyones assistance.

- The brands of DVDRW i have tried so far are , LG, Samsung and a generic OEM drive.

TIA

Installation issues / VDR in Australia
« on: July 24, 2008, 03:47:38 am »
Hi All,

Is anyone in Australia using VDR? If so what are your experiences good/bad. I am currently using mythtv and it is quite good - just looking to see if there are any benefits to using VDR over Mythtv.
