Installation issues / Re: Nvidia 6200 TC Tearing

Hi,

The advanced setup or advanced chipsets or whatever are in the BIOS settings.

Depends on whose system your running, what they call it and where it may be placed.

You said you've already set your BIOS up to use something larger than 64Meg so I guess you've covered that.

Hi,

If you find that your cabling is o.k. then you'll have to concentrate on your video card and xorg.conf file.

Did you set the AVWizard for 720p?  That's your TV's native resolution.

On my TV native resolution is 1080p and was set to that in the AVWizard.

When the system booted up it ran in 1080p showing the Kubuntu splash screen but at a point in boot up (loading xorg) would switch to default 640x480 until I got my xorg.conf file sorted out.

Hi,

Have you tried increasing the amount of memory allocated to your video card via the BIOS?

There might be a setup under advanced setup or advanced chipsets - whatever, called anything from graphic Win size, video memory allocation, frame buffer size, etc.

A lot of time this is set to 64.  Try changing it to 128 (on a 256 card) maybe even higher on a 512.

Just a thought.

Hi,

What sound card are you using?

Are you familiar with alsamixer?

Run that from a console to see what your settings are.  Maybe something got muted.

You can also check this link out: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

Cheers.

Installation issues / Re: I'm unable to install LinuxMCE
« on: July 17, 2008, 02:05:43 pm »
Hi,

If you are doing the DVD installation read this: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DVD_Installation

If you are doing the CD install method read this: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installation_Guide

Which ever one you do, after downloading do a MD5SUM on the iso file(s).

Cheers.

Hi,

What kind of video card are you using?

Are you using the Olevia 232T 32" LCD HDTV, if so the DVI/HDMI adapter to TV via HDMI cable should be O.K. unless you bought a really cheap/bad cable.

Thanks.

Hi,

Are you trying to install the 64 bit version?

If so, try the 32 bit version.  My life has been easier going that way.

Also, upgrade to RC2 please.

Cheers.

Hi Zaerc,

The biggest thing I did was about a three weeks ago I wiped the 64bit installation and went with the 32bit.

Now on initial boot (before udev) the system reports 4 consecutive "acpi: error attaching device data" messages.

I've looked through dmesg didn't see anything critical.

Thought I might just try acpi=off noacpi but right now the only thing that I've noticed is that Firefox crashes occasionally (probably something I've done).

The only sata device is 1-HDD.  2 IDE CD/DVD's.  Board only has 1 IDE connector and onboard serial port pin outs.

Cheers

Hi Zaerc,

I bought this card about 4 months ago...

http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/msi_k9a2_platinum/

I put in an AMD X2 6400+ and 2 gig of DDR2 PC2-6400.

Had freezing, sound and usb problems.

Installation issues / Re: wiimote issues
« on: July 12, 2008, 03:44:42 pm »
Hi,

I tried to use an el cheapo Bluetooth dongle that my son had.

When I tried to boot up with the dongle plugged in I received thousands of error messages that screened by until eventually the system finally gave up and booted.

This dongle came with software for WINXP - it wasn't even plug and pray.

Is this failure on initial boot?  If it is maybe borrow another dongle for test purposes.

If not a problem on initial boot double and triple check your script files for typos - it's very easy to do - make an error.

Double check that your BDADDR is what hci tool scan returns.  Double check the return address - if the font is really small it is easy to misread the MAC address.

The wiimote code as is from the wiki (except of course the MAC address) works on a core, core/hybrid and diskless MD.

Cheers.

Hi,

That's about normal, you should see HDD light activity occasionally.

If you get a caching failure the easier thing to do is copy your iso's MCE disk 1 & 2 and the Kubuntu iso file to your HDD.

Then when running the MCE installer point to where the iso files are in the browser.

This will save you a couple of hours.

Cheers.

Hi Roberto,

Are you doing this on a core, core/hybrid or diskless MD?

If it's a core go to dcerouter prompt and type alsamixer.

If it's a hyrid or MD get to the GUI system/sound look at those settings but it's easier just to get to the terminal and type alsamixer.

Cheers.

Installation issues / Re: Questions about RS232 ports
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:46:59 pm »
Hi,

Most USB ports are only used for service, like applying a software update.

Many TV's that have a RS232 port use that for service only.

For those TV's that have a RS232C serial port (9 pin D-sub male connector) that can be controlled by a PC generally need a cross-type cable.

Usually the PC serial port has to be set to 9600,8,N,1.  All this information including the control codes would be listed in the TV manual.

When you are shopping for a set ask to see the manual to verify that the system can be controlled by a PC and that the control codes are listed.

Installation issues / Re: Can't Install Kubuntu on Fresh Build
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:26:32 pm »
Hi,

Did you check your variant of Kubuntu by running a md5sum check?

Can you run Kubuntu from your CD/DVD drive?

LMCE is presently tied to Kubuntu version 7.10.

1020
Hi,

Sorry, but I still don't like the idea of buying the latest and greatest because normally the support isn't there out of the box.

For LMCE you are better off using "proven" equipment.

As an example, you don't need the latest Nvidia graphics card when an older card at a quarter of the price works perfectly.

The problem with the MOBO and Fedora 9 is my fault.

I let the shiny "silent" cooling tubes and all the buzz words impair my better judgement.

Again, I apologize if I offended anyone.
