Users / Core/Hybrid Dual NIC's Dual MTU speeds.
« on: May 29, 2014, 03:24:17 pm »
Hi,

I've been playing with jumbo frames on my "Media Network".

On the Core one ethernet card is set to mtu 1500 going to the DSL modem (default - can't be changed).

The other ethernet card is set to X000 mtu going through a switching hub (supports up to mtu 9000 speeds) to 2 MD's whose mtu set to matching X000 speed.

The NAS is matching the X000 mtu.

I can use jumbo frames within the Media network, (for movie playback, etc.), but when I want to do, for example, apt-updates/upgrades it fails big time because of the dropped packets from the DSL modems 1500 mtu speed.

Is there a way in the Core to handshake between the 2 different ethernet cards running at different mtu speeds?

I've looked around but haven't (as yet) found anything that addresses the topic.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

1) I did not select "Install this third party software".

2) Under computer name "Geforce-8000-series-invalid-entry-length-0-DMI-table-is-broken-Stop" message received.
   Same on 12.04 install.

3) Liked the return of "please remove installation media and close the tray (if any) then press ENTER:".

4) Selected *Ubuntu on Gnu Grub menu.

4) Ooooh - fancy glowy kubuntu!

5) System booted temporarily into kubuntu desktop - then restarted with Grub memu.  Selected *Ubuntu.

6. Received network messages (including 60 seconds and booting without full network).

7) Got AVWizard after selecting initial screen size got lots of error message...
systemd-udevd[XXXXX]:failed to execute 'lib/udev/socket:0/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:0/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory

8) DVI/HDMI (first choice) with analog audio selected.

   Screen ratio:       16:9
   Video output:      DVI
   Video resolution:   720p
   Video refresh:      60
   Audio connector:   Analog Stereo
Dolby sound test passed: not available
DTS sound test passed: not available

9) Upon "I agree" again got lots of...
systemd-udevd[XXXXX]:failed to execute 'lib/udev/socket:0/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event' 'socket:0/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event': No such file or directory

10) Then...

    0
    ConfirmDependencies Install is running
    ConfirmDependencies Install is done
    InstallNewDevice is running

    ...looking good.  Wait for it...

... after 32 minutes on my system received LMCE installation screens.

11) After 2 hours I'm still waiting for Sarah to say "hello".

I opened a terminal window - OK that works.

The first thing reported by the dcerouter login: ConfirmDependencies buildall is running.

    I logged in.  It worked.

    Running 3.13.0-24-generic.  Have name@dcerouter:~$ prompt.

Logged in as root.  Have dcerouter_1:~# prompt.  Switched back to F7 - nothing, then back to F1.

Did top - flipped around between top, asterisk, ksoftirqd/0, mysqld, StorageDevices_, rcu_sched, etc. but nothing hogging the cpu.

Nothing ran as a heavy user.  Nothing of the conssistant programs ran above 1%.

12) I will let the system run for up to 4 hours.  At that point I will reboot to see if anything develops.

Oh! Just great.  I lost power.

System is restarting.  Booting without full network configuration.

I'll save this now, just in case I get dumped again.

Cheers.

Hi,

I am very reluctant to download for testing.

The last time they were small there was no networking.

Just curious.

Hi,

I have a Realtek RTL8169 chip for eth0 and a Realtek RTL81111/8168/8411 for eth1.

I downloaded and installed the r8168 driver from Realtek.

eth0 shows kernel driver in use:r8169
kernel module r8169

eth1 shows kernel driver in use:r8169
kernel module r8168, r8169

How do you get eth1 to use the r8168 driver?

If I blacklist the r8169 driver eth0 dies completely - ifconfig only shows eth1.

I've tried creating alias eth0 r8169 & alias eth1 r8168 in various mod* types of files (plus other things) but nothing seems to work.

Is this even do-able?

Cheers.

Installation issues / AVWizard Failed to setup X.
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:56:05 pm »
Hi,

I reloaded 12.04 20140416153928950 from scratch, got the networking sorted out with interface swap, PNP'd my NAS and then restarted AVWizard through main menu >Advanced>AVWizard setup.

System restarted and I received AVWizard Failed to setup X message.

On reboot I get terminal message (system frozen) [screen a little wonky - large font]

No updates were applied.  System is running on default nouveau drivers.

I am going to re-install, get networking up (no NAS) and install nvidia-current to see what's happening.

Results will be sometime tomorrow.

Installation issues / 12.04 audio issues - Closed
« on: May 07, 2014, 03:48:01 pm »
Hi,

I messed up my system doing some tests and reloaded snap 2014/04/16 28950 from scratch, did an update/upgrade.

My audio is not functional.

AlsaMixer v1.0.25 shows my Card: HDA NVidia Chip:SigmaTel 92HD206X

lspci shows Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S High Definition Audio (rev a1)

Original install NVidia was the audio chip pci 07 and I was analog stereo.

I restarted AVWizard - now have AVWizard Failed to setup X message.

Will reload from scratch.  Test system.  If successful will update/upgrade to see if something there is an issue.

Cheers.

Installation issues / xine cpu 80% with vdpau
« on: April 21, 2014, 10:57:58 pm »
Hi,

I've been doing some tests, (before I try jumbo frames), and I've notice that while playing a DVD (VOB) from my NAS to my Core/Hybrid, or to a MD, xine has been running at 79-80% CPU.

This is with both hardware acceleration & De-interlace quality set to vdpau with video card defaulted to GeForce.

Picture looks great but it seems strange that CPU % is so high.

I've tried stuff but with little success at reducing CPU %  (which I didn't think would be that high in the first place).

Am I'm wrong thinking this is an issue?

Cheers

Installation issues / Gigabit ethernet card runs @ 100 - Resolved
« on: April 18, 2014, 10:24:58 pm »
Hi,

Before I get too stupid and spend hours/hours looking into things... would a 1 Gigabit card running r8169 driver get stuck @ 100 speed?

Everything works fine except the speed.

I want to set up jumbo frames on my LMCE network because my MD's are not the fastest CPU's.

I was hoping to increase the frame size, reduce my CPU processing and improve my data transmission speeds.

I have one device in the network which is connecting @ 100Mbps @ the switching hub but "spec-wise" has a gigabyte card.

Other devices are 1Gig at the hub.

Cheers

Installation issues / Snap April 13 28939 ehci_hcd errors - Kinda
« on: April 15, 2014, 09:26:37 pm »
Hi,

On this snap (could have been earlier as well) I received a...

 /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd

...error on usb 3-4 at boot up with lots of usb 3-4: device descriptor read/64 and device not accepting address XX messages .

So I ...

cd /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd

and did ...

ls -l

In my case this displayed two files with 0000:00:XX.X names.

I entered the command...

echo -n "0000:00:XX.X" > unbind

for both files and this slowed the messages down quite a bit.  At least it made it easier to enter command prompt entries without having everything overwritten by the terminal output messages.

This had to be re-entered every time I rebooted.

So I put the commands into /etc/rc.local and rebooted.

echo -n "0000:00:XX.X" > unbind /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd

They don't come up as nearly often but they still annoy during troubleshooting.

I don't understand why they still pop up - period, but it's way less annoying than before.

Cheers

Hi,

Looks like some error reporting was turned on.

The handshaking between LMCE and DNS 323 NAS continues as reported in http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=13577.0 reply #19 but I am now getting flooded with (it is spring) a few    Error connecting to socket - aborting operation     and continuous...

CIFS VFS: Send error in SessSetup = -13
CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -13

Cheers.

Installation issues / xrandr & gtf question.
« on: March 17, 2014, 04:09:00 am »
Hi,

If xrandr doesn't show a particular screen resolution - for example 1280x720 does that mean my monitor will not be able to exactly reproduce that resolution?

Even if I plug in a modeline supplied by gtf?

Cheers.

Hi,

In 12.04 with CRT and VGA screen I had this issue...

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=13459.0  see reply #6

...(CRT/VGA/8400GS) and I managed to get around it.

Now I am using completely different hardware (HDTV monitor (1680x1050 max), DVI/8500GS) and adding a modeline and modes either kicks me out to command prompt - no X window and I am provided with a small LMCE window.

I have tried AVWizard in various configuration 1080, 720, etc. but no luck.

I have tried various xorg.conf setups.

When I go to KDE desktop (via LMCE menu) the KDE screen is properly rendered.  Only LMCE screen is small.

Cheers.

Hi,

In the "Who are You? screen during the installation process the "Your computer's name" field gets populated with...

Cheers.
