Installation issues / beta-problem with MD
« on: October 18, 2009, 07:43:53 pm »
Hi guys,

this is my beta-experience so far:
To get the hybrid/ core running so far as I have now, I had a few installations to do.
This is what I did: Installed from the DVD - choose Install Linuxmce
When that was done, I installed my TV-card (nova hd s2- as detailed in the wiki)
Then I rebooted and continued with the install of Linuxmce from the desktop
Ran through the AVWizard and selected basic UI, next I setup Mythtv
After the basic setup of Mythtv was done  and I confirmed to receive TV on the hybrid, I went to the KDE-Desktop and
activated the latest nvidia-drivers (190.32). Doing that earlier resulted in fubar, because the orbiter wouldn't load and instead I got messages from
the dcerouter, that it tried to install the 180-drivers for some reason...I found out, that the 180-glx packages was supposed to be broken.

So far my remaining issues are those :
minor- mythweb says that www-data has no permissions to write to the data-directory - so right now I cannot access the channel-table to edit.
major- I cannot setup my MD, because I get messages like : kernel image could not be found. As mentioned in another thread, I can confirm that there are files missing in /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/  in fact it is empty... also I checked under /usr/pluto...there isn't even a  directory diskless
I tried to manually add a mediadirector with the webadmin (under 7.10 entering the mac of the MD got the creation of the image started), but I  was unsuccessful.
So far I cannot setup my MD.
Before I tried the new DVD I had the latest Alpha running, but doing an upgrade first destroyed Mythtv, because the avenard-repo made a change from mythtv.21 to a prerelease .22
It got really nice optics, but destroyed the mythconverg database, because it wanted to do an upgrade to the database-schema and failed. That's when I decided to give the DVD a run..much to my amazement I found out, that the new mythtv was already integrated.
So right now I don't know what do to....any ideas on how to get my MD setup ?

update: I ran /usr/pluto/bin/
that at least put the missing files and directories - I just noticed, that in /tftpboot I now have even a directory default, which wasn't there before.
when I now boot the MD I get Diskless setup failed. My MD is an ASROCK Ion330- now this is am64 capabable, but as we all know our LinuxMCE is 32bit, however it seems since the last alpha it keeps reporting as amd64 instead of i386....last time I had to manually change it to i386, which helped....lets see now
so far no change.....diskless setup matter how many times I try..delete the md, reload router, start md, receive error, repeat...

Wow, this is quite a milestone :-)
I'm really glad you guys came through with this!

try this:
login to your core
sudo /usr/pluto/bin/

sorry for the lack of feedback, I got it all sorted out so far:

Thanks Thom, I will try it. The only other problem I'm having with this is, that every episode I play seems to disappear from the list after I play it. I put all my videos in /home/public/data/video/(sda1)-CORE[30]/
There I have folder for movies and one for TV-Shows..and each TV-Show got its own Folder. Now if I open the orbiter and do a search in one of those folders, I can only find around the first 20 files, in some cases even less. I don't have any problem like this with the movies so far...only the TV-Shows behave this oddly. I also had this happening in 7.10 before.

Yup, I'm using the webadmin only. I'm looking for a way to organize my tv-shows properly. If select TV-shows in the orbiter, right now I have to scroll a lot to get to the episode of the show I want to see. Of course I could use the search function, but then I wouldn't need to tag them. I read in some other posts, that tagging the episodes with the episode tags, I could somehow make things easier, because the show would collapse and when I click on it, it would expand into the seasons with the least that was as I understood it. So I don't know if this is still concept, or already in place. If the episode-tagging mode is not working yet with the recursively tagging plugin, then I wouldn't mind to manually tag all my episodes, but I'd like to know how to do it properly and if its making any difference.

Hello guys,

I've got a question about the episode am I supposed to use it? I'm tagging my TV-Shows as TV-Shows and they show up, but what will I put in the episode tag- the seaon and the episode number, or the title? I have no idead, really. I know that the plugin for recursively tagging the shows does not work, but I don't know yet how to sensibly handle those.

/usr/pluto/bin/ followed by a reboot of the core.
Do I understand it correctly, that you use the script and then reboot the core...or does the script cause the reboot on your core?
I am asking this, because if the script causes the reboot, then I guess your install is really fubar.
If you do a reboot after that script, then you're making a mistake, because as I understand it, the script either starts or restarts some processes (like dhcp) which didn't start or crashed during bootup.
In my experience, after I started the script, I didn't have to go to the network-settings anymore to get internet-connection on my clients...actually starting the script after reboot should be the only thing you need to do to get you going...then depending on the hardware of your md's they should be setting up and work without too much trouble.

sounds great, I'll try that.
update: You are the man :-) TV is working nicely now!
thank you very much

Well, I tried a few things, fixed the "nonexisting paths", but the problem remains.
All I get is maybe 1 or 2 seconds, even sound, then the frame freezes and after a while I get "error when displaying video"
This is my second MD and its still happening...only the core can play it. Does anyone know, where else I can look for the problem on this system?

Oh, I understand the things involving the WAF....but that is exactly why I'd still suggest the spare hd....because the waf is dropping rapidly when the tinkering goes beyond her comprehension ;-) In my opinion it is still easier to set the thing up in one version until its working nicely enough, then switch around an build the other one up. In the end, you wouldn't be able to run two md's and two cores simultaneously on the same yes, you'd have to build a second network and have all the components twice. Now talking about your amps for example...what good is it to you, if you know that one amp isn't working well with 7.10 and but both work nicely with 8.10.
I've been thinking the same thoughts as you the end, I found out, that what I suggested to you was the best way. 7.10 was running well, but its time is running out. After several trials with 8.10 I made the switch for good. I still have some things to get right, but basically its very safe to assume that with 8.10 you'll get more features and more hardware support than with 7.10, which in the end means less hassle and a rising waf.
Think about it, all you have to do is switch some hd's around and you're done. When you feel like it, you can tinker on the new system, when you feel you need to test out the waf, you just do a quick reboot...sounds pretty nifty to me :-)

why don't you want to use a spare hd? unplug your original hd when you install and you should be fine. When the setup is finished, you replug it. Then you can select in your bootmanager, from which drive you like to boot. Tell the respective installation how it should handle the respective other drive upon recovery and thats it. LMCE will find the media no matter where it is..should be easy as don't really need to have two cores running simultaneously...seems a bit like overkill to me..twice the hardware, twice the work, twice the trouble.
but thats just me and my two cents.....  :-)

I finally got my act together and made the updates to the wiki as promised.

Just check it out, if its okay...sorry for the delay

First of all, you should check in your webadmin, if the correct soundcard has been set for your Mediadirector.
I don't know what other steps you have taken so far and what outputs you want to use (analog, digital coax/optical etc) I will go through the steps I did, just to make sure.
Some may frown about it, but the simplest way is to go to the KDE-Desktop of your specific mediadirector.
Open up a terminal and type
Code: [Select]
sudo alsamixerThis should give you the mixer for your soundcard, where you can check all the available outputs. On most machines the digital output is IEC958. Make sure this is unmuted and the volume is up. This is so far the situation on my core/hybrid. On the ASROCK Ion330, as you read above, the situation was different.
Here the upgrade was needed. If you still have not done so, go now to your ailing MD, open the KDE-Desktop and open up this page again. Download the attached file and open a terminal session.
Move to the directory, where you have saved the file and
Code: [Select]
tar xvf AlsaUpgrade-1.0.21-4Then
Code: [Select]
sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.21-4.shWait until its finished...about 15 minutes and then reboot
After that, the sound should work instantly, if not check again with alsamixer.
Let me know how it went.

okay, I got one problem solved
I updated Alsa on the MD to 1.0.21...I did a little digging around the net and arrived here:
Code: [Select] provide a script, that automatically downloads, compiles and updates the drivers, if I understood it right.
(you have to be registered to download the script)
So now I checked with alsamixer and suddenly I got all the controls I needed...sound optical is working nicley now.
I haven't tried hdmi, but right now I don't care that much for it.

Right now I have only two issues remaining here: getting the sound from the core
and getting MythTV to playback TV on the MD. MythTV-stup still claims that there non-exisiting paths for storage, but they are all there.
Interstingly, like I mentioned earlier, TV is working on the core.
