Feature requests & roadmap / MiniUPnP: UPnP Internet Gateway Device.
« on: December 16, 2009, 03:37:48 pm »
UPnP IGN would help for Xbox or PC Gaming from behind the firewall.  MiniUPnP can provide this functionality if integrated into the LinuxMCE firewall.  I am not in a position to preform this, but I thought someone might take an interest.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Add SSHFS to the options for file server.

I currently have a trusted and DMZ sections of my network.  I have setup rsync scripts to sync media (over ssh) on the untrusted to the LMCE network.  This works, but it would be nice to SSH media connections supported within the LMCE framework.

Wow, the tools are there, and this looks like it would be very useful.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Use in a museum?
« on: November 05, 2009, 01:29:42 pm »
I have not heard of this being used in a museum before.  From my experience I believe that LinuxMCE could be adapted to the environment, but would require some work.

I had this issue as well.  This information was one piece of the puzzle to solve my issue.  Indeed the xorg.conf was not configured.  In my situation, the Xorg.conf took vesa as the driver which persisted in generating the same error.  After switching this to nvida it was smooth sailing.

I don't totally disagree.  However, The download on the frontpage (http://www.linuxmce.org/index.php/download) only has 810.  A newbie is not going to have a good experience out of the box with the 810 release.  Sure there are bugs in 710, but the major functionality works without any tweaking.  This is something that is important for growth of the community, in my opinion.

I noticed that the download on the webpage is for the 810 beta.  I know we're all excited about it, I've been playing with it too.  However, it is beta and I know we've all run into so semi-show stopping bugs... well for the un-initiated that is.  We should probably get a link up there for the 710 stable version.  Just a thought.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Demo Server

Lucid-desktop is an interesting choice.  What was the features of the WebOS that got attention for this project?  I've been using eyeOS and I might be interesting in changing over to Lucid if it was a better offering.

Does the video play with sound through VLC?  Does LinuxMCE play other media with sound?

Well, if you don't use PAE the system will not see RAM over 3GB, system wide.  I did not know about a per-process limit, but I never really though about or investigated that aspect.  I am and was aware of the current 32/64 bit processor offerings and the previous 64bit Itanium offerings.  I appreciate your clarifications.  The per-process limitations are interesting to know.

Glad to hear it.  I know you have a lot invested in LinuxMCE and I'm sure it gets aggravating hearing the same question, requests, and even demands going around over and over.

PAE should allow for 64GB of memory allocation and there doesn't seem to be a cut off for 64/32 hybrid processors.  So, it will be sometime before a turning point would be needed.  In addition there are advantages to 32 bit.  64bit processing is to accommodate larger resource pools, but the bigger chunks take a little more time to process then the smaller 32bit chucks. So processing 32bit natively should be slightly faster.

In either case, I look forward to changing over to 32bit in the next release.  I hope it clears up the stability issues I'm having.

I see where you coming from and I understand your reasoning, it is sound.  However, I can't help feeling a little hammered by your last post, and I feel a little taken back by the harshness.  It was not my intent to slam linuxMCE with the 64bit bat, and so I'm hoping that you anger wasn't directed straight at me.

However, to play devils advocate, though most current functions are I/O intensive there are things that could take conceivably more CPU and memory  resources in the future.  For example, UPNP services also allows for video encoding to resize video for clients.  With HD recordings coming up in the future re-encoding the stream will be more intensive.

I've been running the 64bit version for about a year now too.  I've had some stability and performance issues with Samba amongst other things.  Next release I plan on moving to 32bit.  However, 64bit is the direction that most software platforms are moving due to memory limitations at the 32bit level.  PAE will allow 32bit to survive for a while but at some point it would seem this project will have to move to 64bit.

It provides unified user management.  Someone with Windows systems wouldn't have generate User(s) on all their systems that mirror the DCE users.  This is also useful for other systems as well.  As mentioned before, Freenas could use it.

I agree, LinuxMCE should be the knot that ties everything in the home together.  I believe authentication is a big part of that.  I might even say that incorporating RADIUS into the server would be a good option as well.  I know Freenas has an RADIUS authentication option as does other network appliances and software.  Having these two features would allow for unified access without having to set passwords in multiple places.

Has this made it to Trac yet?
