Feature requests & roadmap / Re: support for IguanaIR
« on: July 08, 2008, 03:29:24 pm »
I just wanted to add my voice of support for getting IguanaIR support in LinuxMCE.  It is an inexpensive, but quality hardware item that can reduce the cost of ownership on a LinuxMCE setup.

Cool, Thanks for the responses.  I've been caught up with other things, but when I get things settled I'll work out the issues, post a response and it possible create a wiki entry detailing the steps.  Hopefully I can get the *.pm through CPAN.  Otherwise, I will see if I can cobble them togeither via the web, or through a a simple standard mythtv installation.

WoW, I guess nobody does this kinda thing.  Well, I focus some time to get nuvexport working and see how that goes.  I'm torn as to even updating my findings or making a wiki entry since not even a single person seemed interested.

Forgot to check last night, got distracted.  However, I did remember that I am setting up this remote on a Diskless MD.  I have added the changes to both the core and the MD, but have not rebooted the Core since the change.  This seems like a local change not a global change.

Thanks for making the wiki and taking the time to help me out.  I'm at work so I can't check it at the moment, however, those were the first two things I checked when I saw it wasn't working on start.  I will check yet again when I get home.  I'm pretty sure I copied and pasted straight from the wiki.  There aren't two KDE-DEBUG entries in that script are there? Maybe I have it above the wrong one?

I have setup this remote using the following KB:

However, I am still having a bit of an issue.  It seems that the xmodmap program still isn't starting up automatically.  I have added the xmodmap start up command to script, but to get the remote to work with mythtv or even xine I have to start up the KDE desktop and run it from a terminal window.

I have tried adding it to rc.local as well as to one of the other X start up scripts in the pluto chain, but still no luck.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Users / Re: Zwave or Insteon

Here is my opinion:

Insteon is probably the best you are going to get (at a cost of course). They are reliable, very fast and perform very well. They are also very well supported in LMCE. They are the most expensive, however, and I'm not crazy about their selection of devices.

ZWave is kind of a middle guy here. They are pretty fast, fairly reliable, and still pretty expensive. They have had a lot of integration issues in the past in LMCE. Their selection of devices is decent though. I havn'e messed with them much, but it appears that you need separate interfaces for their lighting vs. their climate devices (can anyone confirm this?)

X10 is also an option. Though they are slower (about 1 second latencies, sometimes a few seconds if a lot of brightening/dimming events are being sent), less reliable (though I swear that in about 4 years, I've never had a signal fail to go through. But then again, I do have my 2 phases coupled properly, which a lot of people don't do. They are dirt cheap (about $5-$7 each on ebay for switches and outlets, much cheaper if you buy a used lot). This is still my favorite as it has a nice "bang-for-your-buck" effect. I also like their selection of devices (Simple On/Off switches that work with Compact Flourescent bulbs, dimming switches, motion detectors, wall outlets, plug-in light and appliance modules, etc..). I have well over 100 x10 devices in my home - i cringe at thinking how much that could have cost with the more expensive solutions... (Though I readily admit that Insteon and Zwave are much nicer than x10 - But - I can have all of the features in my home as people that make much more money than I do)

So you do have some options.
I would say that if you have the money, go with the best. If you only want to add a few switches, etc, go with the best. If you want a lot of devices and you don't have a large income to support it, i would definitely recommend the x10 - they aren't nearly as bad as some make them out to be)

Either way, you'll have fun. Home automation is addicting!

Actually, a Lamp module straight from ZWave is like 40 dollars US, and a lamp module for Insteon is 34.99 dollars US.  I would say that they are both roughly the same cost.  They both have an interface unit that needs to be purchased in order to operate the units.  With that being said I would lean towards Insteon.  It utilizes a meshed Wired and Wireless network and is inter-operatable with X10, if you wanted to use that as well.

I've been looking for a post regarding Exporting recorded videos from mythTV without success.  So, here I am asking for help.  It seems that Nuvexport is not packaged into LinuxMCE and due to the nature of the installation Nuvexport does not work after an installation from source.  It appears as if a series of *.pm files are missing which are required for Nuvexport to work.  Being new to LinuxMCE maybe there is some other method available within the system that I am not aware of.  Does anyone know of a way to export recorded videos to another format (Xvid, Divx, MP4, etc..) from within LinuxMCE or how to get Nuvexport to work on LinuxMCE without breaking everything?

That's pretty cool.  I hope someone will be able to fill out that functionality in the not too distant future.  I could see myself investing in a jukebox like that if I was able to import and export Video DVDs in that manner.

One of the things I have been missing since my conversion from mythtv is archiving videos to DVD.  The ability to generate a DVD playable media in a quick and user friendly method was very nice to have.

A nice workflow interface like Apple's 'Automator' would be good for setting up Scenarios.  There has been talk about about developing one for linux.  However, having one built into the LinuxMCE admin site would really help out.
