Users / anybody using 1-Wire devices?
« on: July 28, 2010, 02:07:53 pm »
Are there some of you who are using any kind of 1-Wire [1] devices?

On IRC chat I saw that 1-Wire used to be supported but it isn't any more:
"possy: valentt, there used to be a 1-wire device template. Unfortunately it got lost somehow. Maybe totallymaxed / Uplink_ still have that device template in their sqlCVS"

So does anybody still have 1-Wire device template?

Do you use 1-Wire devices? Which one?

I added new WIKI pages for 1-Wire, feel free to expand them:

Users / Control4 underwhelming
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:36:08 pm »
I saw my first Control4 show room IRL, and it was really underwhelming, even my half-broken LinuxMCE system with only two zwave plugs seams more feature rich than full Control4 system. And prices are also pretty steep. One dimmer switch costs more than 150$ !!! One ZWave switch cost me 50€.

I need to complete my LinuxMCE system asap so that I can demo it to guys who install/sell Control4, just seeing their saws drop will be priceless ;)

Congrats to all devels past and present and also to Pluto guys, only after seeing Control4 I see how LinuxMCE is much better when compared with it

Cheers,
Valent.

Users / LinuxMCE multi user tracking system
« on: July 26, 2010, 01:57:34 pm »
http://www.ns-tech.co.uk/blog/2010/02/active-rfid-tracking-system/

After I implement some of basic lmce functions I wonder if it would be possible to implement some kind of tracking system? Have anybody given this issue some serious thought on how to implement it and if it is even possible to implement it in lmce?

Tracking one user is trivial if an possible with only motion sensors.  Tricky part is having multiple people moving around the house and knowing who is where. For that kind of tracking some kind of personally identifiable tags are needed, right?

What would be the benefit of having user tracking in lmce? Would you thing it is an important feature or not?

Users / Where to buy Seluxit multisensor?
« on: July 21, 2010, 02:34:54 pm »
Seluxit multisensor (http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Seluxit_Multisensor) look like great all-in-one device, and if it has good reputation of not breaking (then it is better to buy multiple separate sensors) they I would like to get one for my ZWave setup.

I went to seluxit site and they don't sell it any more, any of their resellers doesn't have this item listed :(

Is there some shop (preferably in europe) that carries this device or would you recommend anyway to use some different device? Which one? Or which ones?

Cheers,

Valent.

Users / ZWave Wiki categories
« on: July 20, 2010, 01:04:47 pm »
Hi,
looking at ZWave Wiki category it was really hard to find some specific device type or list of some sort of ZWave devices, that is why I created ZWave subcategories:

* ZWave controller
* ZWave radiator thermostat
* ZWave remote
* ZWave security
* ZWave sensors
** ZWave humidity sensor
** ZWave light sensor
** ZWave motion sensor
** ZWave temperature sensor
* ZWave switch
* ZWave thermostat
* ZWave wall switch
* ZWave wallplug

So now you can easily find ZWave thermostats just by checking out this category:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:ZWave_thermostat

If you have better suggestion how ZWave devices should be organized feel free to join in Wiki gardening

Hope you find this helpful, I put around 4 hours to make all of ZWave wiki page more usable, it took much more time that I enticipated because there were lots of devices with little to no info what they are, what they do. That tool a lot of time to research and find them online and add correct info to Wiki.

Users / LinuxMCE compatible ZWave windows blind motor controller?
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:37:20 pm »
I would like to control motor for rising and lowering window blinds but I can't find any that is listed in WIKI.
Does anybody have any LinuxMCE compatible ZWave motor controller that works with LinuxMCE?

Which do you suggest I get? (preferably one that works on 220V for Europe)

I currently have regular ZWave wall plug so I can turn motor on in one dirrection but can't reverse direction of the motor this way :(

Window blind motor has four wires; ground, negative and two positive ones, one for clockwise and other for counterclockwise direction (up and down).

« on: July 20, 2010, 08:24:54 am »
Who has experience with Home Automation? I need help making Automation WIKI page better: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Automation

Currently it is not too informative and I would like to create an introduction article but need some help from you guys who already have done more than me with HA.

What do you say to people who are new to Home Automation? How do you explain it to your friends and family? How to customers that you setup LinuxMCE for?
What are the most important things that need to be said that are LinuxMCE specific?

Which topics need to be addressed in this article?

Users / Wiki spam bot invasion
« on: July 19, 2010, 02:02:04 pm »
Hi,
I'm not sure if this is something new (look like) or there were previous bot invasions on WIKI?
Not there are bots (maybe even live users?) that put spam links in two most visited WIKI pages, Main Page and Screenshots.

I found these two spam users:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Special:Contributions/Springer342
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Special:Contributions/Anstett454

They even pass captcha when because when you add external link to wiki you have to correctly pass captcha spam protection.

Is there some better way to protect wiki? Zaerc are you main wiki admin?

Users / Misguided LinuxMCE install and download instructions
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:46:46 am »
Hi guys,
I have see most all of you saying that LinuxMCE 0710 is not supported any more, but on the wiki all download and install instructions point only to 0710 as official and current release (which technically is until 0810 comes out of beta), and most of suggestions I saw is to use latest 0810 snapshots.

Technically speaking 0710 is still last official and current release but from talks from IRC and forums I see that everybody suggest new users to go and use 0810 that is why I think WIKI also needs to reflect this.

I have a few questions:
- should wiki point new users  to use 0710 image, latest 0810 DVD image or to 0810 Beta2 image?
- when and who should use 0710 ?
- when and who should use 0810 ?

These pages would be edited:

Users / More diverse Hardware WIKI page
« on: June 30, 2010, 12:17:08 pm »
I would like to make Hardware Wiki page a bit more diverse and therefore more useful for LinuxMCE users.

Currently Hardware page talks only about Core (PC) hardware but LinuxMCE is far more that just Core, there are lots of other hardware devices that need to play with LinuxMCE Core.

The page would be structured to provide the overview what kind of hardware is needed but doesn't go in too much detail, just provides a general birds-eye view. Special pages need to be created or linked to existing ones for each typr of component that goes much deeper into details.

Any comments? Additiona suggestions, ideas?

Users / User videos on main WIKI page
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:43:32 pm »
I have created new WIKI page as a suggestion of seeing LinuxMCE user videos: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Main_Page_with_user_videos

If nobody objects to this new category I would like to enable it on main wiki page.

Currently there is only one video that I put after a quick youtube search. There are quite a few other LinuxMCE videos out there, and this way also existing users could be motivated to record new ones.

EDIT: Also Thom has lots of great videos - http://www.youtube.com/user/tschak909

Users / How to setup PC to be Media Director (MD) ?
« on: June 29, 2010, 10:57:05 am »
How to setup Media Director (MD) ?

This is pretty lame question, right? Your reflect reaction is probably RTFM, read FAQ or Installation Guide, right?
Well the strange thing is that I have done that but I just can't see any real info on how to setup a separate PC to be Media Director. I have read Users Guide [1] Installation guide [2], FAQ [3], Tutorials [4] and Media Director [5] pages, but just can't see any info.

From reading various posts on this forum and from my own experience I have an idea how to make Media Director but please fill in any additional info.

There are two ways, diskless MD that boots from network and MD that boots from it's HDD and then connects to Core's DCERouter and gets info about media from Core.

The diskless PXE MD setup is documented on WIKI but just fails for me on both of my 0810 cores, one is with latest 0810 DVD image and other is about year old install.

So first step is to install latest LinuxMCE 0810 DVD image on PC that you want to make Media Director, right?

What are the next steps after that?

Please share your knowledge and I'll add the info to the WIKI.

Users / [SOLVED] How to send advanced ZWave commands?
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:05:02 am »
I'm interested how to send some specific commands to tune and setup zwave devices.

I have HomePro ZDW232 [1] dimmable wall switch that has some interesting features I would like to play with.

First I would like to use it's Night Light feature that turns on LED light on when switch is OFF. By default LED is ON when light is also ON.

I read in ZDW232 installation manual [2] that I can turn on Night Light set it like this:

      Night Light
         • Parameter No: 3
         • Length: 1 Byte
         • Valid Values = 0 or 1 (default value is 0)
The LED on the ZDW232 will by default, turn ON when the load attached is turned ON. To make the LED turn ON
when the load attached is turned OFF instead, set parameter 3 to a value of 1.

I looked via LinuxMCE webhttp://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ACT_Homepro_ZDW232ui and in Lighting and Advanced options for this device in Send Command there are only commands for ON, OFF and LEVEL.

Can I send these specific commands via Linux CLI? Is there a way to send these specific commands via webUI? How?

I have looked on WIKI pages, programming guide, ZWave API and other pages but didn't see the needed info. If I missed it please point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance!

Users / Squeezebox page needs some love
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:22:02 pm »
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/SlimDevices_Squeezebox

There are broken links, broken images and from quick google search I see there are new Squeezebox devices which aren't listed on the WIKI page and ones that are seam that are not available anymore.

Anybody tries some new Squeezbox device? Does it work with LinuxMCE? Please update WIKI page with your experience, thanks.
