Mr High and Mighty,

Do you think your nasty comments help the community?  You probably do more to send people wanting to experience Linuxmce away in droves than any other poster.

You are discouraging, angry, and beligerant.

Maybe you should leave.

Users / DVD drive not available
« on: August 10, 2008, 08:42:44 am »
Hello folks.
This is probably a simple issue, but all of a sudden I am not able to rip or play DVDS.  I was in the middle of ripping Madagascar when it came up with errors at 36% thruough.  I poped out the disk and inserted another DVD that I have been able to rip before, but the Cancel Rip icon is showing in the Manage Drives screen.  Clicking on it does nothing.  Clicking on Play brings up a message "I cannoth play this media.  Perhaps there is not a valid device in this entertainment area capable of playing it.  Drive is not available".

I have powered off and on the core (that's where the drive is), but it didn't fix it.

I went to Admin, Ripping Status and it showed that Madagascar was stuck at 36%.  Not knowing the correct way to clear things up, I purged all 10 items but that didn't help either (I guess purging only removes the status messages?).

Any help would be appreciated.

I know, what a noob...

Leo

Installation issues / Re: The Best and Easy to install tuner card.

tschak,

Perhaps you shouldn't respond to newbie's questions.  No need to curse.

He did say he was a newbie in his first post.

And, btw, point 3 also says "With regards to cable subscribers that currently do not have a need for a box for basic analog cable; the cable companies are not required to discontinue this service, unless they wish to. In this case, you may eventually have to use a cable box supplied by your cable provider"

So, his analog service may actually continue...

Afkpuz,
I understand your pain.  I completely agree that DVD media play back should work correctly --period!  A media center edition that cannot play media correctly is like buying a car that cannot roll.

However, I have not had the same problem with lockups.  I have 2 boxes with different hardware that run all day without locking up at all.  I used the DVD install in both cases.

I have yet to try surround sound and Myth TV to comment on them

LMCE been a major frustration for me since I found LMCE while searching for a DVD media server solution.  I was absolutely flabergasted when I found out it also did home automation (another project of mine for years that provided nothing but frustration).  It was a Zen moment for me and I have been excited ever since.  But, alas, frustration is still dogging me (but not as much as before).

But...

In the short time I have been playing with LMCE (a few months), I have seen significant improvements with some issues I had from 7.04.  This gives me hope that in the near future LMCE will get to the point of giving us everything for $nothing.  I will not give up on it like I gave up on my $200 Homeseer software that I could only get to open my garage door from a web interface!

So, hang in there.  There is an automated light at the end of the tunnel!  (dumb, I know).

Users / Re: USB-UIRT learns but wont transmit
« on: May 27, 2008, 07:28:42 am »
Radmofo,
I used the DVD install for i386.  I have an i386 core and an i386 MD.  It is the MD that is working with the USB-UIRT.

The MD is using an XFX GeForce motherboard (nForce 630i chipset, 7150 Geforce graphics).
I am also using an infrared dongle that came with my Global Cache GC-100, but I don't think that matters.

In order to get a proper code learned, I had to place the remote about 6 inches away from the UIRT.  It only took 1 or 2 try's for each of the command to be learned.  I was so surprised when everything worked since I had such a hard time with earlier LMCE versions and my Sony TV and receiver.  My feeling is that some remotes use different carrier frequencies, etc., that the UIRT cannot understand.  Back to when I was trying to get my Sony stuff to work with the UIRT, I could never get a single learned command to work.  I had to instead to go to a website that listed all Sony codes and copy and paste those codes to get it to work.

I hope this helps you.
I wish I knew what I did that made mine work properly.

I am using a USB-UIRT with RC2 that is actually working.  I was actually shocked.
I am using it with a Samsung 40" tv (LN-T4069F).  When I installed RC2 (a fresh install), I was lazy and chose 1 of the 2 Samsung choices and was totally surprised when I was able to change the volume on the TV.  After that, I learned all the commands and every single command now works.

In the past, I had issues with my Sony equipment and solved that with a GC-100 and directly connected the GC's outputs to the Sony equipment slink ports.

jvaughn - Check this link out: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Gyration-Universal-Remote-Control-for-PC-GYR3101US/sem/rpsm/oid/178884/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Yes, it is $36.

tschak909 is correct about the incomplete mapping.  The seems to be an issue with the PageUp and PageDown mapping, but I haven't missed those functions -- yet.
Maybe there are other buttons not mapped that I have yet to discover.  Still better than the WIImote and way cheaper than the fiire remote.

Users / Re: Best motherboard for Core/MD
« on: May 01, 2008, 08:43:25 am »
Believe it or not, but the best core/md motherboard I have found (out of 3 different ones) is the ASUS P4P800.
Its a single core 2.6 ghz system with 1gb ram, and a 1 TB drive.  The video card is an old AGP Nvidia 7600GS card.
I have also tried other newer micro, 2 with HDMI or Component ports, but the video playback sucked and found other problems with the hd audio port (one was an XFX 630i, and the other was a new Gigabyte motherboard.

I have to admit that I am not a very good linux troubleshooter. But time will probably change that.

Users / A/V Equipment disappear in 7.10RC1
« on: April 30, 2008, 05:06:44 am »
Anyone have the problem of disappearing a/v equipment setups?

It has happened twice.  All the other device type stick around (interfaces, core, MDs).

It seems to happen after I setup the IR codes for my Sony reciever and tv.  I am also using a GC-100 to control both.

Any advice on what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Half-Man.  The best (cheapest, too) remote is the Gyration GYR3101US remote.  I just bought oneThere is an easy WIKI install.  Bought it from Circuit City for 36 bucks.

Not to crash the party, but if you want a remote like the Fiire remote for cheap, check out Circuit City ASAP.  They are closing out the Gyration GYR3101US remotes for $36!!!

I bought one, the used the WIKI how-to and voila it works AWESOMELY!

Just my 2 cents.

« on: April 05, 2008, 08:59:50 am »
Well, finally got it all to work!

No amount of fixing the ir blasters to the front of my Sony equipment work work.

After browsing the web for similar situations for getting the GC-100 to work with Sony stuff, someone mentioned that the slink port on the Sonys can be simply connected to the GC-100 with a standard male-to-male mini jack (from Radio Shack).  Just reconfig the GC-100 ports as IR ports with no carrier.  Damn, what a journey.

Anyhow, I hope this helps someone else...

Michael:

FYI:

I did install Beta3, but it still didn't work to control my Sony TV or receiver.  However, it did control (poweroff/on) my Directv receiver.

Is Sony the problem child?

Just thought you'd like to know.

I have come to the same conclusion.  So, it's off to Beta3!!

Well, changing the repeat code in the GC-100 Test utility did nothing.  But something else that the Global Cache tech told me seems to help (a small amount).  The dark red ir reciever covers on my sony receiver may be blocking some of the signal since I was able to turn off my sony dvd since it has a clear ir cover.

Not that any of this helps me since I was working from the test utils in Windows.  Linux MCE must be doing something different since nothing (USB UIRT or GC-100) works even though there definitely is activity at the emitters.

I am at my wit's end.  The only thing stopping me from putting my rig in place is that I need to control my A/V equipment.
