Users / Some videos play with no audio on 0710RC1
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:51:22 pm »
Hello,

I just did a fresh install of RC1. I noticed that some video files, that use to play OK on Beta4, now play with no audio. The rest of my video collection plays OK. My system support DTS/Dolby thru an optical s/pdif. Has anybody experience something like this?

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Better Media Organization / Browser
« on: April 26, 2008, 06:42:14 pm »
Hello,

I'd like to use this thread to advocate for a better media browsing solution. I'm relatively new to LinuxMCE, but I've been using a MacMini with FrontRow, for two years, to navigate my media collection. I have 1100+ (and growing) video files in divX, XviD, avi, wmv, mp4, mkv, and others. FronRow is the only reason why so many people bought the mac to use it as a media center.

I find LinuxMCE MUCH MORE robust in the sense that it doesn't crash/hang as easily as the mac. However there is no equivalent to FrontRow to navigate a complex media tree. All my files (no matter how I sort them) are shown on a flat list, which makes them unmanageable. In my opinion this is the most important feature LinuxMCE is missing.

I recently bought new hardware just to run LinuxMCE, so I'm fully committed to make it work. Eventually I want to replace MacOS and install LinuxMCE on the Mac too.

Yes, I told it to use the NFS share automatically. I followed the instructions on this tutorial to create the share: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Howto:_Using_Network_Shares

I managed to make the share stay r/w permanently (linuxmce is no longer marking it readonly). I still see the same endless chain of messages in the /var/log/messages on the file server:

Apr 26 08:41:45 neo mountd[2453]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.1.2:727 for /usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents (/usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents)

And I still don't see any id3 tags. I still cant sort my media by other than "title". I only have videos on this share. All files and directories are writeable everybody.

I have reinstalled my server with 2 network cards, and I haven't messed with the DHCP settings. I get a dynamic IP address from the main server on my network (which I configured to be always the same), and pluto's dhcp runs on the second card (the installer did this automatically). Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong?

I created an NFS share. I made it writeable. I see its mounted (rw) by runing the linux command mount from a linuxmce terminal session. I see s bunch of:

Apr 26 00:32:00 neo mountd[2453]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.1.2:690 for /usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents (/usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents)

Apr 26 00:32:35 neo mountd[2453]: authenticated mount request from 192.168.1.2:657 for /usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents (/usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents)

in the /var/log/messages file from the server. What is it doing? I hope is creating metadata files, however find /usr/fatboy/CleanTorrents | grep -i id3 on the NFS server doesn't reveal anything. Furthermore, when I go on the web interface for the share, I see Readonly checked. I have created the share twice with the same result. I'm willing to let it finish, but I don't see it creating any metadata. Any ideas?

I mount my shares readonly because I don't want any extra data written to them, However if you're telling me that linuxmce will only write ID tags to those files, I'm OK with it. However I don't want additional files/directories created on the shares.

Yes, I added it manually. There is a PK_USERS and it's set to public. Other values are my user name or "Pluto's Structure". If I change it to Pluto, will it alter the structure of share directory? The share is readonly.

Fair enough. I should have known better  :) I will reinstall everything again this weekend. If I don't post on this thread again, it means you were right and everything worked fine after the reinstall.

Thanks again,

I think I use the UI-2 (is that the nice one with blended buttons on top?), because I have the Sort button on the left hand lower corner. When I select sort by Filename, I only see:

tv_shows_0
tv_shows_1

Only when I sort by Title, I see all my files, but its quite unmanageable. So I use the "Search" option under "More", but as I said in the original thread its kinda tedious.

Is it possible that sorting by Filename doesn't work for me, because the devices (they're SAMBA shares) are READONLY?

Let me know your thoughts.

Gracias,

Erasmo

Users / Re: Turning off DHCP screwed up my SAMBA devices (0710 Beta 4)
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:27:23 pm »
Update:

I went to the "device tree" and manually entered the IP address for the server that owns the missing shares. After this, my screen server came back (not sure why), and I coud see the device mounted from the shell command line.

Then I ssh'ed into the dcerouter as root and ran:  /usr/pluto/bin/Configure_1768.sh -d my_device_number. This made my other samba share come back online and could see my videos again.

The DHCP server on the router was turned off while I did this.

So my question still, is it OK to disable the DHCP server on the dcerouter? Has anybody tried this?

Thanks,

Erasmo.

Hello,

I have all my media files organized on a directory tree stored on a separate box. I have ~1200 video files, not to mention my MP3s  (+10,000), nor my pictures. I use a MacMini with FrontRow to  watch those files on one TV, and Linux MCE on my other TV. The only think I like about the Mac (and the reason I spent $500 on it) is the FrontRow application which offers an incredibly simple and smooth way to navigate thru my media files.

On the other hand LinuxMCE has EVERYTHING else that the mac is missing, including stability (the mac often crashes playing DivX videos probably because I installed an unsuported codec). The only thing is missing is a navigation facility as good as Apple's FrontRow. Currently I use the search facility, which works OK, but it takes me a while to locate the video I'm looking for.

I think a Media Navigator capable of browsing thru a directory tree would be a fantastic improvement for LinuxMCE. Is this planned?

Users / Turning off DHCP screwed up my SAMBA devices (0710 Beta 4)
« on: April 24, 2008, 07:41:39 pm »
Hello,

I have a somewhat atypical configuration. My LinuxMCE router is not the center of the network and it has only one network card. I have a large linux box (with a 1.5TB RAID5) that acts as my gateway/router/file/print/internet server. I initially configured MCE to get an IP address using DHCP. This worked fine, until other computers connecting to my network started to get an IP address from LinuxMCE, instead of from my linux server.

So last nitght I went on the web interface Homepage -> Advanced -> Network -> Network Settings and turned of the DHCP server (http://download.erasmix.net/mce/Screenshot-1.png). After I rebooted, none of my WINDOWS shares (I had to mount my linux server directories as SAMBA, since NFS didn't seem to work) showes up. They still exist as devices (http://download.erasmix.net/mce/Screenshot-2.png), but LinuxMCE doesn't show my videos/pictures stored on those devices.

Then I went back and enabled the DHCP server and put back the IP addresses ranges for Pluto and non-Pluto devices. Same result. I cannot see any of my files.

I'm about to wipe my install using RC1, but since I spent quite a bit of time setting up my video and photo devices, I even got the screensaver to show my own photos rather than flicker, if there is a way I can fix it to avoid redoing all the work.

I'd also like to know if I can have Linux MCE not to interfere with my DHCP server with just one network card. I dont plan to connect any devices to the network that the dcerouter needs to be aware of.

Sorry for the lengthy message.

Thanks,

Erasmo.

UPDATE:

I've tested the latest version of XINE on my Fedora box (which is seems a cpl releases newer than linuxMCE's), and it plays as desired. English by default, and the audio channels point correctly to Chinese and English respectively. Therefore it seems the quickest fix would be to embed the latest version of XINE onto the next release.

Regards,

Erasmo.

Awesome!!!  ;D I saw the change in Mantis. When is it expected out?

The file in question is 8G. I could provide you a torrent file though.

Hello,

I have a few mkv files with both Chinese and English channels. I assume xine plays the default language, which is Chinese. However when I right click on the player and go to "Audio" -> "Channel" and select "eng", it continues to play in Chinese. After going mad for a few minutes, I decided to select "chi" and it finally decided to play in English  ??? I also installed VLC and tested. The Audio channels are correctly labeled "English" & "Chinese", and they are not crossed like on xine ("English" plays in English, and so on). Even more pleasant, VLC plays the English channel by default, not Chinese.

This definitely seems like a bug in xine, but even when/if gets fixed the best way around would be to have a Video Menu, like we have a DVD Menu inside the LinuxMCE interface. Do you guys agree?

Thanks,

Erasmo.

Users / PLaying video files with multiple languages?
« on: March 24, 2008, 06:14:25 pm »
Hi,

I have an mkv video file that has multiple languages in it. LinuxMCE plays it in chinese rather than english and I can't find a way to choose a different language. I know the 2 languages are there, because when I play it using Videolan VLC, it allows me to choose. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Erasmo.
