Users / Re: MythTV - image is shaky - change FPS rate?
« on: April 07, 2008, 10:37:40 pm »
Colinjones,

Thx, no, I haven't considered VDR yet;
As I'm new to MythTV and because it's tight integration with LMCE I'd like to get to grips with MytTV first.
Can you tell whether you can VDR and Myth next to each other?

Thx,

Erwin

Users / MythTV - image is shaky - change FPS rate?
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:19:02 am »
Hi forum,

Just managed to get MythTV to show something on my screen.
Let me explain a bit:

- DVD setup beta4
- One Core/Hybrid - WITHOUT TV CARD
- One MD - WITH PVR-150 and M$ MCE remote control

I had quite some fumbling to do before I managed to get TV image on my screen, but that is possibly due to my not knowing anything at all about MythTV!!

As there is no known provider available for my region (Belgium) I copied and grabbed an example off a website to provide for Belgium.
This worked allright, but, during my fumbling I created several "sources" in attempting to get TV going.
Also I chose, at a certain point, to have MythTV scan for channels.

Result is that I have a completely garbled channel information, containing channels 3 times, and also there are plenty of empty places...

1. What is the best way to clean this manually and in the mean time get a better understanding of MythTV? (I tried to record, but it doesn't seem to work etc.) Can this be done here: http://192.168.80.1/mythweb/settings/channels? Or is it better to use the channel editor in MythTV?
2. How can I control channel chosing with the M$ MCE remote? It does react to some buttons, but using channel + / - doesn't seem to work as expected...
3. Is there some place to manage the remote's functions and buttons for MythTV?
4. TV image is shaky, it seems like frames are missing? What are the recommendd settings here?

Thanks a ton for your precious advice! ;)

Users / Orbiter - navigate to subdir - HOWTO?
« on: April 06, 2008, 10:47:53 am »
Hi forum,

On multiple harddisks I store DVD information in its own /rootdir/movie_#1dir/ ...
/rootdir/movie_#XXdir/
I haven't found yet how I can navigate (via orbiter) to these subdirs...
What is the secret here?

Obviously I don't wan't to stuff all DVD info just plain into /rootdir won't I? ???

Is it perhaps necessary to tell LMCE through webadmin to add these subdirs as a location or?

Thanks for helping out!

Users / LCD flat panel - 100 Hz - worth while?
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:04:36 am »
Hi forum,

Preparing to buy a LCD flatscreen, not sure yet between 42" and 46" probably 46".
Apparently 100 Hz technique has also entered the LCD world.

Can anybody tell me if this  technique is worth its money?  ???
Comparing to 'classical' TV sets, the 100 Hz produced a 'less flickery' image, as the flickering became invisible to the human eye.
I cannot imagine the benefit would be the same to LCD. After all I'm using plenty of LCD's connected to PC's around, these don't seem to flicker, and they don't use 100 Hz technique...

Awaiting your comments.

Best regards,  :D

For who it my be convenient:

I had it fixed reasonably easy;
I checked /var/log/dpkg.log and had a look at what apt-get hat done for me.
Amongst others I saw it'd deintsalled ubuntu-minimal and pluto-orbiter.
Did a reinstall of these 2 and was up and running again :-)

But - unfortunately - my Hercules Fortissimo still doesn't sound good :-(

As I've already had my share with the install (for one DVD-install will absolutely not work on this box)
I am reluctant to do a new install, I already have a couple of MD's around etc.
Also I really don't like LMCE to run my DHCP stuff and such as this goes down when I need to work on the machine...

I'd like to check orionsune about letting my other DHCP server do the job, but don't know exactly what it entails to switch from 2 nic's to 1 nic.

Thanks for helping!

Okay, I got myself into some mess...
In an attempt to correct the soundcard problem, I issued
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
Then I reinstalled the forementioned.
After a reboot, my core/hybrid orbiter won't start:
Code: [Select]
Not starting device 20 OnScreen Orbiter - binary is not found, probably it is in the middle of installation
But even after a couple of minutes, nothing happens...

Any smart advice to set right my error?
Thanks,

Erwin

Just to signal that after a couple of reboots the card got recognized.
SPDIF optical output is functional.

Sound is quirkey though...
When I pop in a DVD sound is allright but intermittently halts...
It is unbearable to watch a DVD this way..
Also when changing for example in Amarok to another song, there is a hissing scratchy sound (short)

Any ideas or suggestions?

(Hercules Fortissimo 2 recognized as cirrus logic c546xx)

Thanks,

Erwin

Users / DVD drive noise - recommendations?
« on: March 24, 2008, 04:31:08 pm »
When using common PC as media director or core, the internal DVD drives often are quite noisy compared to a stand alone DVD player.
Are there any recommendations to keep the DVD spinning noise under control? Can it slow down spinning speed and still play allright?

Thanks,

Erwin

Hi folks,

I'd like to switch my Audigy soundcard with a Hercules Fortissimo II. (optical SPdif)
LMCE doesn't seem to do the switch automagically.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can / have to do to get this right again?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Andrew,

Thanks for helping out, even on saturday night! (what kind of people are we? :-))
The above is clear, and I am connecting to moon## as root, but it asks for a password anyway..
As I have never entered a passwd in Kubuntu, I don't have one...

So what's the clue?

In the meantime did a ssh erwin@moon## and then login succeeded..
So i guess its a root pwd problem?

Thx,

Erwin

Andrew, thanks for the tip of ssh-ing into moon#md;
What would be the passwd of the md?
I've tried using the standard user / user and some more but it won't accept me..

Thanks for your advise.

Installation issues / DNS adding hostname - HOWTO?
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:53:30 pm »
Hi,

As cross subnet routing or bridging seems to work, I'd like to get nameresolution working. (these are fixed IP's from a different subnet (192.168.100.0))
How can I add a hostname to LMCE?

Otherwise I'll have to go modify hosts files...

Thanks,

Erwin

Installation issues / network - routing to other subnet - HOWTO?
« on: March 22, 2008, 11:55:40 am »
Hi folks,

Situation:
LMCE default network config; external eth1 has fixed ip 192.168.100.101.
I have an existing network in the range 192.168.100.0
Switched off DHCP on my 192.168.100.0 network.
LMCE has DHCP running.

How do I route workstations connecting via LMCE to my existing network? (printers, shares)
Can I (manually) add shares to LMCE that are on my 192.168.100.0 subnet?

As I am in a testing stage, I'd prefer not to go changing all my existing network apparatus.
If I would adapt LMCE to use the same 192.168.100.0 subnet, will TFTP / PXE still work out of the box?
What settings need to be adjusted?

I join a network layout. (it seems uploading an attachment doesn't work?)

Thanks for you help!!

Erwin
