Users / wm5
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:56:16 pm »
hi there everyone!
I have a wm5 device but I cannot decide if it should work with Lmce or not :)
apparently there is a treo.cab somewhere that might work :)
but look as I may... I have been unable to find it anywhere!
so.. does the treo.cab work with wm2005 (orange m3200) and if so.. where could I get it?
of course.. being impulsive.. I just bought an N80 thinking that was supported (DOH!)
so now I have another phone I cant use!!
any help would be greatly appreciated

Installation issues / no sound :(
« on: March 14, 2008, 10:57:30 pm »
hi all!
yes- it's that pain again!
a couple of problems seem to be persisting!
firstly I have no sound from my usb dvb tuner wintv nova-t (the original one)
well... I have two of these!
one has a conexiant frontend and that works OK except for the fact there is no sound!
the other has a philips frontend and that times out whilst scanning for channels (takes forever trying too!)
anyone come across this?
also..
I recently (earlier this week) rebuilt the core :)
I am now using a asus m2n-mx se plus motherboard
sadly I cannot get any sound from the internal soundcard in fact there seems to be no sign that it is detected at all!
though being a Linux newbe I could easily be looking in the wrong place lol!
also..
the onboard network card does not seem very interested!
oh well!
apart from that I seem to be making progress!
(I am using a usb soundcard at the moment until I get the on board sound working)
I have sound from DVD and other media stored on the core :)
anyone got any ideas?/
thanks for reading!

Users / USBUIRT
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:43:32 am »
this may be a silly question..
probably is really!
but I assume you use a USBUIRT to control devices that us IR to control them..
but after spending half an hour on the wiki and a while here..
I still cannot decide.. if
USBUIRT is a physical device or a protocol!
if (as I assume) it IS a device.. where do I get one..
or
if it is not a device.. what device do I use to control IR controlled equipment?
oh yes and do the X10 IR units work with LinuxMCE?
sorry for the newbe questions!
just something I could not get an answer to looking on the forum or wiki (maybe I am asking the wrong question?)

Users / dreambox 500?
« on: March 13, 2008, 01:58:50 am »
hi there!
hi all!
I have a dreambox (running enigma I believe)
now I would love to connect it to the core :)
but NOT using a capture card :)
rather TCP/IP!
ideally using the network to stream the video from the box to the core and using the same path for control :)
(don't want much do I lol!!)
it can all be done in the web interface in enigma so I would imagine it must be possible (but well beyond my abilities) to sort
anyone have any thoughts?
that would be the holly grail for me :)
thanks!

Installation issues / did I buy the wrong hardware??/
« on: March 13, 2008, 01:27:05 am »
hi all!
flushed with (moderate) success getting an old p4 running Linuxmce going (somewhat) I decided to sort of take the plunge and try it "for real"
so yesterday I went and bought..
blu-ray writer
asus M2N-MX SE Plus
AMD X2 5000
2GB DDR2 800
TP-Link Gigabit network card
2 X WD 500GB SATA2 Drives
PVR350 MCE
Hauppage GSB2 WINTV nova-t
cm11 (X10) thats X10 not ten of them lol!!

first.. MB would not post with 2 memory modules on board (turns out to be a bios issue)
but now.. the machine (Sarah) is running :)
just a few we problems I am hoping someone may be able to help with :)
I cannot get the MB's NIC to work (I think that is on the 430 MCP chipset)
I have not pursued this too hard as I have been preocupied with the total absence of the sound card :(
I have tried everything I could see on the forums but I cannot get it to show up at all!
I am now out of ideas completely (not to unusual for me as a windows refugee)
but I am determined to get this all to work (after skitting all my mates that have gone the Vista mediacenter route)
in the meantime..
I got a usb soundcard up for now :)
but now that I have gotten myth to work with the Hauppage :) I am left with another problem!
there appears to be no sound from the hauppage!
I have not dared to even think about the PVR350
or the CM11 yet lol!
so I am sure to be back!
you know..
I cannot even begin to imagine the ammount of work the developers and you other guys n galls have put into this!
it is outstanding!
(as to be fair is the Linux community as a whole!!)
so I wont even complain a little about the fact that there are hardware compatibility issues (serves me right for not paying enough attention lol)
but any help at all would be greatly appriciated!!
thanks for reading this (rathe long) post :)
I wish there where more people about like those in the open source movement!
maybe life would be better for everyone..
oops off on a tangent again :)

Users / help please after upgrading video drivers!
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:48:22 pm »
hi all!
well yesterday I managed to make my first recording from live TV :)
however playback (and live tv) looked terrible (looked like some form of interlace problem)
now I am told the combination I have dvr250 and nvidia 6600 should be ok!
however.. it looked like I may have had the wrong driver
so I followed these instructions  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers
everything seemed to go OK
until I restarted then all I get is a grey screen with a mouse cursor :(
if I restart x ctrl alt bkspace then startx
I get a fully functional KDE desktop and everything seems OK
but I don't know why lmce itself does not start ?
thanks for any help!

Users / VDR stopping!
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:05:18 am »
hi all!
I am having some problems with VDR :(
when I first setup LMCE when I went to live TV a "no signal" banner came up after reading a bit I realised I needed to scan for local channels (hauppage windvr usb2) after a lot more reading I worked out how to scan and produce a channels.con file (and where to put it)
now when I look in pluto it says "custom provider" but when I restart VDR it appears to start with no error message.. then apparently it stops immediatly! anybody want to tell me where to start please?
(Linux newbie sorry)
thanks a lot!!

Users / help newbe warning!!
« on: March 07, 2008, 12:56:09 am »
not sure where to start really!!
hi everyone!
you are doing great things here!

I caught a certain video on youtube a couple of weeks ago (you know the one :) )
now.. I am pretty new to linux so please bear with me :)
I have ran Bill gates version$ (all of them) and after seeing THAT clip I was inspired to try Linuxmce!
now I don't mean to be critical (I really don't I REALLY appreciate the amount of work everyone has done both in this project and in Linux in general) I use PClinux OS and Dream Linux quite a lot (as well as running BQ Servers etc)
so I suppose I am spoiled a bit by the stability and completeness of these!
so here goes!
installed Linuxmce on a spare P4 2GHz with 1GB of RAM and a reasonable video card..
then (after following the tutorial) turned off the DHCP on my router and installed it again (I couldn't get the DHCP server to start on the first install lol!)
then I set up a MD.. so far so good!
got it to talk to the rest of the network and the media catalouging was great!!
now things started to take a turn for the worse!
I sort of hoped my cm15 would work.. you know "out of the box" (if I find that guy I am going to give him a SLAP!)
of course it didn't work that way so I put that asside for now and went and bought 2 hauppage usb2 dvb-t tuners..
after reading for hours about dvb utils I finally got one of the tuners to scan and create a channel list!
(the fact the other one wont is a bit of a mystery right now :)  )
installed VDRadmin and followed the tutorial in the wiki..
but as soon as I start VDR it stops again!
no error (that I can see anyhow)
I won't even mention.. I cannot pair either of my bluetooth phones with the core as the seems to be no way to recipricate in the mating ritual :) (passkey)
and after reading the wikki I am uncertain whether I should try to "mate" my wm6 phone via bluetooth at all!
my s60 phone just balks at the passkey!
now it won't play DVD's (not even the ones I ripped earlier) saying dss is not installed (though it says it is in he interface)
2 and a half weeks on and I am losing all my hair lol!
sorry for this super long winded post!!
but I really want to SLAP that guy :)
the biggest difficulty for a moron like me is knowing at what stage things really are at...
that is to say..
what really works and what might work in beta 6 :)
please forgive this howl of anguish!
I DO realise just how much work is going on!!!!
really..
the real question should be:
am I out of my depth?
..
to give you an idea I have been a TV engineer for the last 25 years..
I have A+ network+ and ccna
but I have very little expierence in nix :(
having arrived here via the Gates school of philosophy :)
I really want to mend my ways! but just how deep is it going to get?
anyway!
I think I have stuffed it again (another install??)
as in desperation before I did an apt-get upgrade-distro (or whatever :) )
anyone game enough to tell me where to go from here?
of and do I need to reinstall again (time 4)
still!
I feel like a close personal friend of Sarah (the name given to my core too!!)
and I am spending that much timne with her my wife thinks Sarah is a real girl lol!
again!
sorry for this super long winded post!
I am looking for help and more than a little encouragement/moral support :)
lastly..
if I want to continue with the home automation side of things..
do I have to look for a cm11?
or can I use my cm15?
I would love to use Zwave but the UK prices!!
$120 for the PC interface and about $75 per interface I think they are having a laugh!
I have converted a fair bit of my X10 stuff to 240 V mains so I could be ready to go with that :)
again thanks for reading!
and if any of you guys (or galls) see that guy that did the video on youtube would you give him a slap for me please :)
Garry
