Installation issues / Re: The nvidia saga continues
« on: March 22, 2008, 10:15:53 am »
In my LinuxMCE Launch Manager i don't see this version:

If i did i could probably test and reconfigure the screen properly

is this utility phased out or only available on the cd installer?

Installation issues / The nvidia saga continues

I'm still struggling to get my nvidia cards recognised and running properly as UI2, but that's another story....

Anyway, assuming I can  get it working, or that i give up on UI2 and use UI1, can i set the UI to display the samsung native res of 1366x720?
the setting "720p" in the AV wizard is not compatible and there is not an option for this in the webadmin page for the orbiter/director.
If i set it in the xorg.conf will the orbiter re-render its screens to match whatever res its forced to?

Would like to know to prevent me spending more fruitless days getting the drivers recognised only to find i cannot set the res correctly

...help...

surely someone else is getting this!

I've had it on every install and a friend who is struggling through this is also experiencing it

In the last three DVD installs i've attempted, the permissions set on the public videos directory prevent mythtv from writing tv shows to it!

When i complete the arrangement of the channels and exit the setting up of xmltv, Mythtv reports that it was unable to create public_tv_shows_nn.

would i like mythtv to correct it or "No, its OK, i know what i'm doing"

Well either option leaves me with directories that mythtv is unable to write to and yet the folder permissions look fine

Strangely, mythtv can write its "ring buffer" to the folder to save live tv, but is unable to write proper recorded programmes there

Any ideas appreciated

Installation issues / Why the 2 large partitions created by the DVD
« on: March 18, 2008, 10:58:20 pm »
I'm wondering why the DVD installer creates (on my 40gb test system) not just the usual swap partition but two partitions called "media", one 28Gb and another of 10 gig

Is this normal? Shouldn't it just create the swap and use the remainder for the home drive?

Installation issues / Re: Installing MD on CF cards
« on: March 14, 2008, 03:14:00 am »
let me answer my own question here!

Have a look at beta 3 Known issues, for the time being just diskless md's are supported

Apparently if i install 0704 then upgrade to 0710 that may work. I'll let you know

When (and possibly if) I get my linuxmce installation working on my test system, can i use the backup/restore method as documented in http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Backup_and_Restore to get it moved across to the bigger server?

In one of my newly purchased Linux books (don't say I'm not taking this seriously) it mentions that you can move Linux operating systems between pcs with only minor adjustments. Is this truth or just a myth?

One issue that concerns me is that the original test server was built with the single processor option, whereas the new processor is dual core.

on my current windows server, i have one blaster from the MCE remote for each of the two sky boxes

in the linuxmce admin i can only see them listed as one unit

is it possible to control them seperately?

Installation issues / Installing MD on CF cards
« on: March 09, 2008, 11:11:21 am »
I've got a couple of media directors working with my core now but i was wondering how to install this onto a CF in an effort to speed boot

Should i run the linuxmce dvd and install to the CF, and then how much space would it need?

If the DVD image is huge, would it be best to install a light version of kubuntu on the cf and run linuxmce on it manually?

Still struggling, but have high hopes for this

Ashley

oops, is see that someone has asked how to install onto install on a USB. sorry for double posting! but still would like an idea of how big this card would need to be

I'm breaking into smaller chunks problems I've encountered this week:

When a core created a diskless set-up, where does it source its files from? The running core or a default set-up somewhere?

I'm asking as i had a problem with sources.list this week:
If you edit the one in /etc/apt on the core and rebuild the image for a diskless MD, the MDs /etc/apt/sources.list is created using default values from "somewhere", but i cannot find where?

Installation issues / Resurrecting pluto repositories

I've spent many an hour this last week fighting a Pluto or LMCE system without luck so far. Various things have tripped me up on route

I'm happier with Pluto. The test system i had going a couple of months ago was working fine.
i prefer the terminal based core and also my server did not like running the LMCE mixed hybrid situation.

So there are three questions:

1.Is it possible to get the pluto distributions anywhere now that http://deb.plutohome.com/debian is no longer valid

2. Where do i set the sources.conf for a MD. When i correct the location of reps from yttron.ru to its current location on the core, they do not end up in the list that is built for diskless set-ups. Is this in a temple somewhere.

3. Once I get past updating the sources.conf on the core, can i get it to re download everything it should have during its set-up apt-get update does not seem to search out everything.
Essentially i want to to re-run the set-up with its new sources.

Do you reckon this would work for videos too?

My scenario as i'd like to see it:
My young boy has row of buttons that are programmed, via serial interface to fire certain kids films

This could be done i reckon with these media scenarions
