Users / Need advice on input devices.
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:51:00 am »
Questions at top, skip to setup below for details.

How can I force a firewire input to change to a specific known good channel and then run prime_myth?
How can I use a single schedules direct guide and force myth to use firewire for channels 2-99 and an s-video capture for channels 100 and above?
If I have multiple input sources that are only available in various combinations, an s-video input that can only be used by itself, plus a tv-tuner (same card as s-video) and firewire can be used at the same time.  Will mythtv handle this automagically?

==============================================
current setup:

I have switched from DirectTV to Comcast cable.  Currently I have these configured on my core/md hybrid:

PVR-150 - Channels 2-99 - can't use at the same time as s-video.  Using the comcast cable schedule from Schedules Direct.

firewire - Channels 2-99 - some channels appear to "hang" mythtv.  It appears that whenever I start mythtv it defaults to firewire and the last channel mythtv was on.  Sooooo, if I hit a bad channel it hangs.  When I try to quit mythtv and go back in, it tries to restart on the bad channel and hangs again.  Right now it's "stuck" trying to start on channel 71 and if the tv-card isn't being used it will eventually give up and start TV using the tv-card.  Cannot use at the same time as s-video.  Best picture quality.  Using comcast digital cable schedule from  Schedules Direct.

s-video - Can watch every channel as it's just the s-video output from the cable box.  Cannot use at the same time as PVR or firewire.

Schedules direct is currently setup for comcast cable and comcast digital cable, channels 2-99 on each.  It will not allow me to setup a second comcast digital cable for channels above 99, so I don't know how to map the lower channels to firewire and the upper channels to s-video.  Cable is slightly different from digital Cable, although it may be close enough that I could set both firewire and tv-tuner to cable and use digital cable for s-video and not have too many issues.

Users / Need help installing on a previously ignored device.
« on: August 06, 2008, 02:27:28 am »
My son has a windoze PC that he wants to run LinuxMCE on.  Unfortunately when I boot off PXE it gets to "IP-config: eth0 ....." and just hangs there.  A tail of /var/log/pluto/dhcp_pnp.log shows it's giving it an IP of 192.168.80.248, which is in the LMCE "anonymous devices not in Pluto's database" range of IPs.  I have gone into advanced -> configuration -> unknown devices, found the mac address, and removed it.  I have also gone into /var/lib/dhcp3/* and removed all entries for that computer.  Finally, I rebooted the core.  I have made a tiny bit of progress as originally before doing all this when I did a tail on dhcp_pnp.log it was showing "Device already marked as unknown, ignore" and showing a .245 IP.  Now it's giving it a .248 IP with the message "NEW DEVICE !!!"  Unfortunately I'm still stuck, as the boot still stops at the same spot and I cannot find the device anywhere in the web admin.  I really don't want to go mucking around creating the device by hand as I've read that's a bad idea.

I may try editing the .lease files and restart dhcpd to give it an IP in the pluto devices range, but I hesitate to do that 'cause messing around with this kind of stuff has bitten me in the past.

Users / any word on the usbuirt transmit bug?
« on: August 04, 2008, 11:30:28 pm »
As I understand it there is a bug in the 710/i386 version of USBUIRT that causes it not to be able to transmit without an external dongle/transmitter.  Any word on the fix for this?  I don't know if it's LMCE specific or just waiting for an external app/library fix.  I know I can always buy the external transmitter, but pre-upgrade the internal transmitter worked just fine and I'd rather not buy extra hardware and have extra wires because of a software bug that may be fixed already or very soon.

edit:  if the bug isn't fixed and a fix isn't expected soon I'll just buy one.  I think the xantech 286 is the recommended one, but in doing a quick search I see both a 286-M and a 286-00.  I can't seem to find what the difference is other than M may mean manual.  Does it matter which one?

Users / find where media-subtype and/or genre are not set?
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:37:47 pm »
Is there anywhere in the web-admin page or via MD where I can find the videos that do not have the media-subtype and/or genre set?  I know I can go to Media Files Sync and click the show attributes button, but with over 400 videos and growing fast this isn't a good option.  The Media Files Sync also doesn't show the media-subtype, so I'd have to open each one in the Edit Media Files window to even check to see if it's set.

I basically don't know anything about Mysql, so I'd rather not go that route and have yet another thing to try to learn, but if it's the only way and someone can tell me how I'll give it a shot.  I don't even know what prog I would need to use, mysql-admin, mysql-query-browser, mysql-navigator, or something else?  Maybe it's really easy to learn the basics and I should have dove in long ago???

Users / UI2 onscreen remote?
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:53:46 pm »
Under UI1 when watching a video if you press an arrow key it brings up an onscreen "remote control" for the video/lights.  Is there any way to get a similar remote onscreen when pushing an arrow key when running UI2?

Background:  I'm using a cheap-o remote on my MD that is basically a mini wireless keyboard that looks like a remote control, arrow keys, number keys, I think chan up/down are pg up/down...  No F[1-12] keys.

Users / playback jumpy after being up for a while
« on: June 18, 2008, 06:06:10 pm »
I tried to search, but I couldn't really find anything, probably my search-fu is off.

My core/md hybrid works great when first booted, but after a period of time, maybe a day or two, the playback gets jumpy as if there is a high load average.  Looking at the system right now while a movie is playing from external USB HD and jumpy, the cpu use is low, 70% to 90% idle and over 600MB out of 2G ram free.  I did notice there are currently 169 local connections either to or from port 3450 (DCErouter), not sure if that's normal or not.  It's been up 4 days.  I'm not sure if a simple reload of the router fixes it.

It's not an issue with the hardware, after a reboot it's fine, plus it's a dual core AMD BE-2400, 2G ram, nvidia 7300 SE, filesystems all have plenty of space....  Right now that's the only lmce device, no other MDs, no network mounted drives, nothing else I can think of.  I guess it could also be related to the external USB drive???  I just thought of that as a possibility and haven't tested.

Any ideas?

Users / I'm sooo confused..
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:14:26 pm »
I've installed lmce 3 or 4 times in the last couple months, but I'm confused on what I did different this time.  Everything is all setup (again), but from within MythTV, I cannot change the channel of my satellite stb.

I have no cable or antenna hooked up to the TV.  I have only one core/md hybrid.  I have a PVR 150 which is configured to have the STB connected to svideo (picture works fine in MythTV).

The other difference is now there is an entry for Live TV - H21-200 (my STB model).  From there I can watch TV, but none of the options do anything, no channel changing, nothing unless I use the STB remote itself and change things directly.  It's semi-redundant and I'd always prefer to go into Myth, how can I remove it?

Users / Anyone successfully playing H.264 videos?
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:52:45 am »
No weird green blocks growing from the left side of the screen or other issues?  If so, what version of LMCE are you using, and is it x86 or AMD64?

Users / make mouse pointer go away?
« on: May 03, 2008, 07:49:20 am »
I'm surprised this hasn't come up, or my search-fu is off 'cause I can't find even the question on the wiki or here in the forums.  How can I make the mouse pointer (the 4 arrows thing) not show up?  It's always in the lower left corner covering "play" or whatever other button happens to be there.  It doesn't keep anything from working, nor does it show when playing media, but it's distracting and gives LMCE an unpolished look.

Users / video format suggestions?
« on: May 02, 2008, 09:25:28 pm »
A couple times now I've thought I had the container/codec question figured out, but I'm back to the questions stage.  Ignoring the issue of which program(s) to use, which settings, etc. what container and codecs are recommended (by users, not necessarily officially)?  What I THINK I want is:

codecs:
video codec: H.264 for the video for good quality and smaller file size,
sound codec: AC3 sound to I can pass it through to a 5.1 stereo when I get to that point
subs: forced subtitle support either burned in or automatically played.

testing with these containers gives me:
AVI: limited options and functionality, and the program I'm using either crashes or locks up while trying to transcode as a test.
mp4: does not officially support AC3, and while the program I'm using to transcode will create an mp4 with x264/ac3 there is no sound on playback with mplayer, and xine just crashes.
mkv: does not play natively on my Archos, limiting my ability to drag and drop movies, but I can live with that.  movies play in mplayer/xine but within lmce they have green blocks that grow and shrink from the left side of the screen, often taking up over half the screen and making it unwatchable.  I am also unable to skip forward/back properly, different symptoms with different players, but none of them work well enough to use.  pause/play is as good as I've been able to get.

If it matters, I'm trying to rip/decode from my DVD collection.

Users / video examples?
« on: May 01, 2008, 01:03:17 am »
Any good sites where I can download various video clips with different codecs/containers/resolutions?  Specifically looking for H.264/AC3 examples, but I'd like to check various resolutions including Hi-Def.  I'd rip examples from my DVDs, but I'm having trouble getting handbrake to rip x264/ac3 without hanging.

Users / Blu-ray help?
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:01:51 pm »
As a test I bought a single Blu-ray disc, Live Free or Die Hard (not much to choose from where I was).  I pop it in, it recognizes it as a Blu-ray disk, offers to rip it, then runs for a few seconds and claims it's finished.  Obviously nothing is ripped.  I'm running on 710b4, and I installed the extra Blu-ray software.  Looking in /var/log/hddvdrip.log I see:

Users / USB UIRT + streamzap (or other) remote - howto
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:00:49 pm »
Disclaimer:  I'm new to LMCE and still trying to find my way around the web admin, and writing this from memory...  If someone wants to clean it up, fill in the gaps, and make a wiki entry I think it would help a lot of people out.

Special Note: First and foremost, the plug and play functionality of USB UIRT is NOT an lircd setup.  This may be spelled out somewhere, but it was lost on me.  Once I figured that out with confirmation from tschak909 I quite trying to fit steamzap into a lircd configuration and started making progress.  It's also worth noting that it is is likely possible to setup USB UIRT as an lircd device, but I didn't go that way and it's likely counter productive unless you have a complicated remote and an existing working lircd configuration file for it.

Step 1:  Verify USB UIRT is installed and configured.  Once you plug in the USB UIRT it should be plug and play and add both the USB UIRT device as well as the Windows XP MCE Remote (USBUIRT).  Go to Wizard->devices->media directors.  Near the bottom of the page you should see the MCE remote listed, with the Infrared Receivers pulldown set to USB UIRT 0038.

Step 2:  Add your remote.  From the Media Director Wizard, simply click the Add Remote button and go through the add/create steps.  If you are doing a streamzap (apparently the model number for the remote is PC_Remote), you will likely have to start with Add Manufacturer to put in streamzap, then close and re-open the window to be able to select it.  The Device Category should be changed to USB-UIRT remote controls, but I took the long way to figuring this out, started with Remote Controls < Peripherals, and fixed it in the next step.

See the image below for steps 3 through 5

Step 3: Configure the remote correctly.  Go to Advanced->Configuration->Device Template, find the remote you just added, and click the Pick Template button.  This brings up the Edit Device Template window.  If not already set, change the Device Category to Peripherals - Remote Controls - USB-UIRT Remote Controls.

Step 4: Add the Configuration (string).  In the Device Data box, add the new parameter Configuration (String).  Put the key codes in the Default Value field.  For the configuration I grabbed the config for the MCE remote (USB UIRT) for the button names.  Then I did a tail -f on /var/log/pluto/53_USB_UIRT_0038.log and as I pressed each button on the remote I grabbed the codes from the error message and built a configuration from that.   BTW, I did this in OO Word Processor, not the web page.  The box is way to small.  I had to do this twice to get both key codes for each key.  Perhaps someone else can explain this better, but it appears remotes send two different key codes depending on if you hit the button once or twice.  The configuration codes I am using are listed at the bottom of this post.  I also clicked the Use Master Device List Defaults box because that's the way the Windows MCE remote was setup, and again I don't know what it does.

Step 5: Add the Remote Layout (String).   In the Device Data box, add the new parameter Remote Layout (String).  For the Remote Layout (String) entry I just used the same setup as the MCE Remote.  I have no idea what the default layout of "W" is, but without a Remote Layout (String) entry, the router will not reload.  It loops on an error (apparently 50 tries, but I didn't let it go that far).  Hopefully someone can better explain what this does and what options other than W are for.

save and close the Edit Device Template window

Step 6:  Remove and re-add the remote.  Back to the Media Director Wizard.  Remove the remote, add the remote, then update the MD.  After this you should be prompted to reload the router, if not do a quick reload.

At this point you should have a working streamzap (or other) remote.

I will try to keep this post updated if/when anyone finds corrections to this process.

Users / lirc remotes - I just don't get it. **success**
« on: April 04, 2008, 08:52:21 pm »
I have a USBUIRT, and have managed to get things set to where lmce/usbuirt can control my TV (as far as I can tell) and my DirectTV sat box.  As the DirectTV was not listed, I had to add the AV codes one by one by pushing a button on the remote and letting it read.

However, for the life of me I can't get any remote to control LMCE itself, I'm stuck with keyboard and mouse.  None of my remotes are ones that already exist in LMCE and I must be doing something wrong when trying to add new ones.  I followed this wiki guide using the lirc config for my streamzap remote, but the remote doesn't do anything:  http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Add_support_for_new_remote_controls

Please don't tell me to just buy yet another remote.

Users / MythTV crashing
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:33:19 am »
I did some forum searching and it appears there was a problem with MythTV locking up from within LMCE after a few minutes.  As far as I can find, no solution was posted and there hasn't been any talk about it since around December.

I'm have a DirecTV STB outputting to the S-Video port on a PVR-150 card.  I can watch TV, change channels, etc.  However, after a short period of time, maybe as long as a few minutes, it freezes.  At some point before the freeze, the sound stops.  I can ctrl-alt-f2 and login fine.   alt-tab shows the lmce windows, but none of them actually get me out of MythTV.  From what I've found, I can either reboot completely, or ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X, then restart X.

If someone wants me to try some things and help investigate, just let me know.  If anyone has a solution, even better.
