ok, hopefully I understand the question.  I think that you essentially want to install LMCE as it is intended.  There is no special 'core' version per say, it is a matter of designating the machine as being initially either a core or a hybrid.  As I use a hybrid core, I am not the authority on pure core set up but I would think that hooking a monitor up during the install would be helpful.

What you describe as 'Media Extenders' is what LMCE calls a Media Director.  They are designed to boot from the network (hardware dependent)

with the disclaimer that you must have compatible hardware, it sounds like what you want is possible...perhaps even probable

My experience with manually setting the modeline to 1080i was that it is possible, but it caused the UI to run very slowly.  Annoyingly slowly.  Using 720p was not noticeably worse as far as picture quality but the UI functioned normally....so I just stuck with it.

so i guess the only question is does your monitor not handle 720p at all or just not natively?  If it can, I would just stick with it cause 1080i was a pain...

well, seems like my core is behaving again with b4 so I would be interested to know how you set up your network to get the LMCE machine to recognize/catalog the media on your Mac. (And is this possible from the external network or must I do it from the internal)

dumb question but, the only code you added was the final DisplaySize, correct?  the other things were just how you figured it out?  :-\

thanks.  it would still leave the issue of having my Mac internet access dependent on the LMCE machine.  Which in theory is not a problem.....but my LMCE PC has in the last week suddenly become very unstable again and is freezing/hanging often (several times a day)

I had been holding off on the upgrade to b4 because everything was working fine...but now I have problems again.  If the update fixes the issue, I will take you up on that offer...

the NAT problem was interesting though.  From my end, everything worked fine, meaning I could DL,  from the trackers side, it always showed me as 'not connectable'  and although I had forwarded both tcp and udp to the mac on the internal network from the admin page, my torrent client always showed the port as 'stealth'  The macs firewall was in this arrangement, off.

but we will see what happens today

i have my mac set up in a slightly different manner and it works great.

two nics with the Macs on the external network

using the admin log in to my router, I assigned the LMCE machine and the two Macs static IP addresses.

then when I want to transfer files, I open a finder, click on the 'Go' in the menu and then click 'connect to server'

At the prompt enter smb://192.168.1.35 (that IP address is just an example, you must use your LMCE IP address, so smb://whatever_your_ip_is)

you should then be prompted for a password and then for which folder you care to use (public, user1, user2, etc...)

After choosing the folder you will see the LMCE file structure.  Add files as appropriate.

I used this method for several reasons:

1.  My Macs are not dependant on the LMCE machine to connect to the Internet
2.  I had trouble getting the LMCE port forwarding to work properly when using the internal network which made Bitorrent downloads a pain.
3.  As I had to specifically tell my Mac which folders could be publically accessible, it still would have required moving around the media in my Mac (or changing permissions)
4.  I just like having the media locally on the media PC.

not sure if there is a method inside LMCE or not but what I did was use the KDE desktop to transfer the files from one drive to another.  easy as drag and drop.

The M2N-SLI Deluxe MoBo has a problem with apic not working correctly with ubuntu.  it is pretty well documented on ubuntu sites and there is a work-around but just so you know... I wrote a little about it here

if you are using a mouse/keyboard combination to control the LMCE machine then you can use the function keys:  F7 brings up the main menu, F6 the position bar for a movie, F5 for volume and lights. (although I may have the F6 and F5 backwards, but give them a shot.)  Then use your mouse as normal.

okay that is where my confusion came from, I have the 500GB USB version, I didn't know there was a ethernet only version...
like JimmyGos, I just reformatted into ext3 and plugged it in...

why wouldn't you just plug it into the core and use it as a USB drive, you should still have access to all the media at any MD, right?

I have all my devices on my internal network.  Including a Brother LAN printer, a ps3 and a vonage phone.  I can not get any of them recognized as anything but a file server.  I have yet to figure out a way to set them up other than such except by manual entry.

my question here is: why?  maybe I am missing something obvious but why would you want to have anything but the MDs, NAS and perhaps the VOIP phone on the internal LMCE network?

Andrew,

just so I understand what you are saying (and so I don't spend lots of time trying to get something to work that is impossible) in your experience, I can make and receive phone calls using just the embedded softphone on a hybrid core? so it should simply be a matter of troubleshooting and then tweaking my settings.
