Users / What to do with ripped blu-ray via anydvd
« on: January 04, 2009, 02:44:43 am »
So, I've ripped a blu-ray using anydvd and now I'm not sure what to do with it.  It outputted a folder.  Now, as I write this, I notice that there is an option to write to an iso.  Which one of these is usable by LMCE?  I'm going to go ahead and rip it again, but this time to an iso.  Then, will I need to do anything special to watch that iso once I copy it onto the core?  Thanks guys.

Users / Will mythtv make use of my 2nd hard drive?
« on: December 07, 2008, 09:58:59 pm »
When LMCE detected my 1TB drive, I told it to use it to store stuff on it.  But recently, I got a message that I was running low on disc space.  Apparently, all my TV shows are being recorded on my smaller harddrive which is just about full.  Is this ok?  Will lmce switch over when my first hdd is full?  I tried changing the mythtv settings and told it to save on my other hdd, but it changed back after a little while.  How can I get lmce to only save on my secondary hdd?

Users / Album Art Question
« on: December 03, 2008, 10:48:58 pm »
I've run into a weird problem and need some help.  I've gone into the media files sync area and tried to add a picture to an album.  I used the "edit all files in this directory" and uploaded a picture.  When I go back to my cube and sort by album, the picture does not show up.  However, if I click on the album and view the individual tracks, they have the newly added picture.  I also tried adding a picture to every level of the album that I could, including album and artist in media files sync.  Still no thumbnail for the album, just individual tracks.  Any help?

Users / Quick question about motherboards
« on: November 27, 2008, 02:23:37 am »
Hey guys, I'm just curious if there is any benefit to buying a motherboard with a built in video card vs. a pci-e  based video card?  For example, I'm looking at a board with a geforce 8200 chip set built in.  Good idea?

Users / Need the perfect hardware for simple end users
« on: November 26, 2008, 09:16:35 pm »
Guys, I'm going to be building a LMCE system for my parents.  That means that I need hardware that is just going to work.  While I've built a system that works well, it still occasionally requires tweaking, so I'm asking for some definite hardware that I could use that you guys have personally verified to work.  They only need DVD and TV playback, so don't worry about home automation.  Also, I will be scouring the the wiki as well, but just wanted to hear some real user suggestions, not that "this piece of equipment mostly worked with some tweaking".  What are some truly plug and play hardware that you guys know of?  thanks

So, I think the main things I need suggestions for are motherboard, videocards, soundcards, and TV capture.  Any help would be appreciated and don't bother pointing me towards the wiki: I'm already researching there.

P.S. If you guys have any links to stores selling these parts, all the better!

Users / 2nd hard drive keeps "getting added"
« on: November 21, 2008, 02:55:39 am »
I have a secondary sata drive which keeps getting added to my system.  Every so often, a message pops up in the top left which says "finished adding new device /dev/sda1...etc".  This happens at random times and with lots of time in between each occurrence.  Is this a common occurrence?  I've had this happen on several different installs.  How can I stop this?  Oh, and my other hard drive (with the OS on it) is IDE based.

Users / Can't save mixer changes between reboots

My title says it all.  How do I save the changes I make in the kmix console?  It always resets after a reboot.

Users / Going to buy new mobo
« on: November 11, 2008, 06:28:33 pm »
Hey guys, I've been having lockup problems and decided to try a new mobo.  I was looking on the wiki for user builds, but couldn't seem to find them.  So, I have an either/or question.

1.) Can anyone point me towards some know-to-work mobos?  (Just needs to support regular old P4 @800fsb)

2.) Where are the user builds on the wiki?  You know, where they post their builds and how they worked?

I found this motherboard and wondered if anyone could tell if this would do the job.

Users / Hard lockups more than just thermal problem
« on: November 01, 2008, 09:22:21 pm »
Ok guys, I have another thread where I asked about my hard lockups and that one ended with me thinking that my lockups were a thermal problem.  Well, I'm back to say that there must be more going on than thermal problems.

As of right now, I have the side of my computer off and a box fan blowing air into it.  Yet my core still locks up when I leave it for a few hours.  I think that since I've reinstalled so many times, only once in a long time, an install does not lock up.  So here is my question:

What are the common causes of lockups?

P.S. I have turned the screensaver off

Users / Need help with rs232 tv
« on: November 01, 2008, 08:27:46 am »
So, I asked this question in another thread, but it didn't get me all the way, so here goes again.

I have an olevia 232t television.  It has an rs232 control port and I have a serial cable connected to the core.  Someone in the other post told me to update my cvsSQL or something similar and I did that and now there is a template for olevia floating around the web admin.  My problem is that I have no idea what to do with this.  Can someone walk me simply through how to go about this process?  Any help would be appreciated as the web admin is not making sense to me right now.  I don't understand the concepts or the means involved here at all.  thanks guys

Users / Strange Busybox error
« on: September 07, 2008, 02:33:01 am »
So, I had a working system and think I broke it.  I ended up taking out a harddrive.  I also checked the jumper settings.  Then, after a reboot, I got a busybox error.  This guy's post has a photo with the exact same error I got.
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2596.0

So, then after reinstalling, I still get the same error.  Anyone know what could cause this?  I can't put the old harddrive back in because it failed.  Plus, I have had this exact hardware setup work before.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Feature requests & roadmap / A few ideas I've come up with
« on: August 11, 2008, 08:44:53 pm »
Hi all.  Let me say that I love LMCE and am trying to do what I can to help the project.  I've already made some videos on youtube and am contemplating writing some documentation for the wiki.  I've thought of a few suggestions that I think would help LMCE in function.

Relating to audio
1.) Ability to tag an entire album with one piece of cover art
Seems like the cover art manager only allows for tagging individual tracks with album art.  It would be nice to be able to tag by album.

Relating to video
1.) When new videos are added to the database/cube, add a thumbnail to the video based on the first frame.
When I add videos from my digital camera, there are given non-descript names, live dsc20041.avi  thumbnails would help immensely for videos that are not tv clips or dvds
2.) Better aspect ratio detection
I've played a few dvds where they did not fill the screen.  A simple change of the aspect via the main menu fixed this.  Auto detection would be great for this.

Relating to setup
1.) Analog surround sound
A lot of sound cards out there, including onboard cards have analog surround sound output.  Getting these cards to work is easy in ubuntu, therefore analog surround sound should be an option during setup.  Right now, when the A/V wizard runs, the only choices are stereo, spdif, and optical audio.
2.) More flexible mixing options
Those same analog surround cards sometimes have irregular names for there mixer channels.  Thus, even when using those cards for simple stereo sound, LMCE cannot control the volume on some of them.  So, maybe having the ability to choose the master mixer channel for LMCE would correct this problem.  I've tried changing the master mixer channel in kubuntu, but that doesn't seem to affect the LMCE environment.
3.) On screen notification for volume change
Just a small thing, but it would be nice to see a volume indicator when changing volume so I know that it's being changed and what level it is at.

Relating to pictures
1.) Ability to slideshow all pictures in a directory.
I tried the "play all", but that didn't seem to work
2.) Screensaver should be able to search subfolders in the picture folder
I've made several sub folders in /home/public/data/pictures and the screensaver can only pick up the ones in the top folder.  It would be nice if the web admin area of the screensaver would show all pictures in all subfolders.  I had to make duplicates in the top folder in order to choose them for the screensaver to use.

Well, that's all I've seen for now.  I just wanted to get these ideas out.  I bet some of them have already been fixed in recent updates.  Thanks devs for all your hard work

Users / 2nd ide hard drive keeps getting added
« on: August 11, 2008, 05:51:46 am »
I'm running a single hyrbid and my second ide hard drive keeps getting added.  I keep getting the message that it has been added.  However, I cant seem to save a dvd to it when I try to rip one.  I haven't yet tried putting other media on it, but what is going on?  How can I get it to permanently be part of my system?

Also, will I be able to just copy media onto that hard drive and it will be detected, or will I need to point LMCE to certain folders in it?  Thanks

Users / How can I learn to edit the wiki?
« on: July 18, 2008, 07:51:54 pm »
Hey all.  I've learned alot and have some things I'd like to post on the wiki.  Trouble is, last time  tried, I got really confused and ended up not doing anything.  Can someone walk me through how to do it, or point me to place that could teach me?  I'd really like to contribute, especially after thom's latest letter to the community.  thanks.

EDIT: I'm particularly interested in writing documentation for newbs.  I think that could help alot of people.  I picture a link on the wiki main page called "Getting started" which would then detail the steps involved with building your own computer (should also link to existing hardware guides) in easy to understand terms, moving on to installation procedures, then setup, and so on.  But before I can do any of this, I need to learn how to edit the wiki.  I'd even be willing to moderate a "beginners team" for documenting.

Users / (SOLVED)Where to put ripped dvd isos and tag them as movies
« on: July 18, 2008, 02:11:44 am »
I have some dvds ripped to iso format and I put them in /home/public/data/videos/Movies/

I had to create the Movies part, but they showed up in my video cube.  However, they are not tagged as movies, so I can't filter out just them.  I've tried each entry under "type", and they only appear when I select all.  Any help?
