Yea I do understand! I happen to a "businessman" myself, you don't have to give me some snide remark as if I'm unfamiliar with the laws of my own country or how complex an issue it really is. I don't appreciate being belittled. I research plenty... and I certainly wasn't implying that the suggestion was a 2 minute C++ snipnet, or as simple as a web service.

Good grief, it was a friggin suggestion. Never said it was easy... more or less it was directed as an "idea" to think about for the future, and to ping an idea off others who may/may not have thought about the possibility. If you got time to answer a post in less than 20 seconds, maybe you should work on cooling that attitude of yours down as well. That's one of the reasons I can't STAND posting to any forums anymore... because you get people who act like their 12 and know it all to respond in a negative manner to every post they come across.

Not if you pursued it in the right way. I'm not asking to do anything illegal, or promote P2TP File Sharing... that's not what I'm suggesting at all. You could turn it into a profitable service... so how is that legal if Apple can get away with it?

Just have to cross the T's and Dot the I's.

Users / FTP Services?
« on: February 13, 2008, 04:58:12 pm »
This might be a really dumb question... but is there anyway to turn on FTP services? I have another drive that I keep all my work documents on etc that previously had WinServer 2003 running on it. I set my network up in such a way that I could access the files on the FTP from anywhere. I'd still like to have that running in the background on my Core if at all possible so that I can still get to my files remotely.

Any easy way to do this?

Feature requests & roadmap / Rent Movie Feature / Master Movie Database?
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:19:09 am »
Just curious, but I liked the idea Apple TV went with in allowing users to "rent" titles via the internet. Thought this was a very cool option, especially since you can get them in HD or Blu-Ray.

What about allowing for something like this, OR, perhaps making a peer-to-peer type application. I.E. You use a program to capture an XML extract of LinuxMCE core's currently attached to internet, to extract Movie Title, quality, Size information to a central database program. Users of LinuxMCE could then browse through the DB for a title they'd like to watch, and assuming there were a client software piece located on each MD, the MD could connect to the person(s) with the movie, and stream it to their MD.

Just some thoughts... noodle that one a bit ;)

Users / Re: My Core/Hybrid power usage.. Please post yours!
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:09:50 am »
Currently my core draws 50watts using similar specs as in the demo (non-hybrid). Only modification was disk space... 2 Internal SATA drives, 1 is 750GB, another is 500GB. The linux core runs of a 20gb IDE ATA drive, which is perfectly fast enough. There's a low wattage PSU in there but can't remember the specs (i'll get em later).

Also, I have 1 MD at the moment. I used a mini-ITX style, in an ultra-low profile fanless case, and draw 5watts from that (max I think has been around 9 - 10 watts).

Plan to build 2 nano-ITX style MDs for my other 2 tvs in the house.

I posted a while ago about my concerns for using ultra-low-power and smallest form factor possible. I also posted some of the specs as to what I went with if you're interested.

Users / Posting Pics Issue
« on: February 11, 2008, 02:57:01 am »
Not really sure where to put this other than here, but I seem to be having an issue posting pics to the forum. Was trying to attach a 51k jpg which lays out my setup for a particular post I have and it errors out.

Get the following message.

"An Error has occurred"
" Cannot access attachments upload path! "

I've tried placing the file on just the root, and still can't seem to upload. Not sure what the deal is.

Right and that's what I was referring to... there isn't some end-all-be all software out there that will gaurantee a sufficient decryption of all BD-content material yet. Yes I know it was cracked in a small test case over a year ago, but like I said, doesn't work 100% of the time.

Interesting... guess I'll have to look into getting a BD capable drive then. Didn't get one because of the express concern that ripping wasn't available yet. Thanks for the info!

Hmmm, good question, I haven't checked out B3 yet. Waiting on my new Media Directors to arrive. Is there any separate documentation available on these tools? I'd be curious as well...

However, still, I've done research on the decryption and ripping of BD-HD discs, and I still have not found 1 article that references software yet that can do this successfully on a wide scale basis. So even if the tools are present, I kind of doubt that they could be used Out-oF-The-Box to decrypt and rip a BD disc. It's possible those tools were intended for "un-Encrypted" BD materials, I.E. HomeGrown movies or digital content burned to a PC BD-Disc.

Just a guess. ???

I can't honestly see myself purchasing anything above a mini-ITX style motherboard for a media director. Because when you cross into the mATX or ATX style, not only have you increased the SIZE of your Media Director 10 fold, but you've also increased the noiseness, and the power consumption.

I HIGHLY recommend mini-ITX or nano-ITX style motherboards if you can get away with it. You can still get all the features you really need or want out of a mini-ITX board. Nano-ITX boards suffer a bit on available features yet, and Pico-ITX style have a bit to come since they only contain the basic output features.

You're trying to rip a DVD or a BD disc? If it's BD... I was pretty sure that there isn't a "decryption" mechanism available yet to rip BD discs... maybe i'm behind on the times? I mean I know it's been "Decrypted" but I haven't seen a publicly released method or software that's out there yet that actually lets you do this sucssefully.
