LinuxMCE / Users / Re: How stable is 8.10?

Hello,
My 810 core is solid. My MD's run about 12 hrs a day each. Either watching MythTV, or videos/movies.
I have recently had some issues with my CM11A. I will squash those bugs as soon as I get some free time. It used to work flawlessly, after I installed 810. I think the hardware may be failing.
Oherwise, this new 810 has been rock solid. Many, many improvements. Highly recommended.
Give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.
Regards,
Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Anyone Have Insteon Working in 810 yet??
|
on: November 06, 2009, 10:06:41 pm

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone had Insteon working since they have installed 810 alpha or beta? Please post here if you have it working, and any special steps to get it going. I am going to give it one more try before I switch to Zwave. Thanks, Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Strange Orbiter behavior on the core after the 9/14 update.
|
on: September 16, 2009, 01:58:19 pm
|
Hey all, Been a while since I have posted. But after this latest update, I needed to compare notes. I have updated all my MD's and he core to the latest fixes. Now all my MD's seem to be happy with the updates. Great things have happened. Storage groups work, excellent. However I have notice an issue. My DirecTV boxes are controlled by the core with a USB-UIRT, and they are hooked into a PVR 500 and daughter card. Now the issue I am having is this: I lose the orbiter on the core. I go downstairs to the wiring closet and all I see is the mouse cursor. Thinking it is asleep, I click, but the Main Orbiter screen does not come back. Only after repeated mashing on the F1, F2, and F7 keys does it come back, but then after time it goes away. Since there is no orbiter, my USB-UIRT can not change the channels. So I reboot the core, and for a while it comes back, but then after time it goes away again. Now watching it reboot, I see it come up like it is supposed to, but I notice the orbiter and all the device loads once, then it loads itself again. I am wondering if something is calling it twice in the beginning. And if so, what? This is what ps -ef shows: seth@dcerouter:~$ ps -ef | grep Orbiter seth 8425 26341 0 08:50 pts/9 00:00:00 grep Orbiter root 30805 1 0 06:04 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/SCREEN -d -m -S OnScreen_Orbiter21 /usr/pluto/bin/Spawn_Device.sh 21 localhost LaunchOrbiter.sh root 30807 30805 0 06:04 pts/27 00:00:00 /bin/bash /usr/pluto/bin/Spawn_Device.sh 21 localhost LaunchOrbiter.sh root 30902 30807 0 06:04 pts/27 00:00:00 /bin/bash /usr/pluto/bin/LaunchOrbiter.sh -d 21 -r localhost -l /var/log/pluto/21_LaunchOrbiter.sh.log root 30948 30902 0 06:04 pts/27 00:01:39 ./Orbiter -d 21 -r localhost -l /var/log/pluto/21_LaunchOrbiter.sh.log
This is a bit from the log: Tue Sep 15 23:10:15 EDT 2009 died ========== NEW LOG SECTION ========== 1 09/15/09 23:10:26 21 (spawning-device) ^[[1;00mStarting... 50^[[1;00m 1 09/15/09 23:10:26 21 (spawning-device) ^[[1;00mFound /usr/pluto/bin/LaunchOrbiter.sh^[[1;00m 01 09/15/09 23:10:28.439 ^[[31;1mSDL_SetVideoMode hangs on init. LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: learning pronto ir codes with USB UIRT
|
on: June 23, 2009, 02:25:28 pm

Hello. First question I have for you is which version of LMCE are you running. If it is 710, the USB-UIRT is broken for x86, and an updated driver needs to be downloaded from here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/USB-UIRT_x86_FixIf this is the case, then after following that wiki you should be squared away. If it is not, or you are running the x86_64 version of lmce (known to work out of the box) or the alpha (not sure of its status here), then I would look at which direction the front of the device is facing. While powerful, the emitter on the usb-uirt can be blocked by line of site issues. Hope that helps out. Best Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Orbiter Custom BackGrounds?
|
on: June 18, 2009, 06:06:57 pm
|
|
Hey all,
I was recently creating a new orbiter with the wizard, and noticed the "CustomBG" button. So i figured I would try it out, and added a nice little image to my weborbiter. The only question I have is, What does it do? I did a full regen on my weborbiter, and loaded it up here t work, and it looks no different than before. I went back to the button in the webadmin, and I see my image is there. But what does it do?
Just a stupid question for the day.
Regards,
Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Easiest way to copy data from NAS to MCE machine
|
on: June 09, 2009, 01:28:32 pm

This may seem like a stupid question, and please take no offense, but why copy the data, when it can be played fine right from your NAS? I do this and never seem to have any issues. Of course having the media right in your core, may yield some performance gains, but if you have a working NAS on the LMCE network, you should just be able to use it. And then perhaps save your 2nd drive for storing more media, in addition to what your collection already has. Just a thought. Best Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: SOLVED: CM11A Device gets Disabled Periodically

I have seen this as well, while I was using the USBtoSerial adapter. As my system had a USB-UIRT on it, on a reboot, sometimes the device ID would change and /dev/ttyUSB0 would become /dev/ttyUSB1. I have since then purchased a serial daughter card for the header on my mobo, and now the issue has gone away. I thought it was just dumb luck, but now as you have experienced the same thing, I guess we can chalk it up to the USB bus.
My system is currently functioning with a CM11A, 19 X10 devices, and 3 Insteon Devices.

Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Tip: Redundant Wifi = WAF
|
on: May 21, 2009, 04:29:50 pm

I have a similar issue at my house. I have the internet coming into a linksys wireless N router, then from there I use port 1 to the core. This gives the core and all lmce internal network connections the internet. Then from the switch connected to the internal network, I have 2 access points hooked up. This way, if I am working on the core, all wirelessly connected machnies can just switch networks. See attached diagram, for a visual explanation. Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: login as root on md
|
on: May 19, 2009, 06:45:43 pm
|

If by "log in" you mean using the linuxmce user, I have seen this before. The MD is treated as an appliance, best I can tell, and for the user linuxmce to connect to it, it uses credentials almost like a SAMBA CIFS share. It does not have a passwd file on hand for a specific user, just the sambahelper user, and root. Again this is mostly speculation on my part, but I have tried this since 7.04 and I got the same result as you. I usually sudo to root on the core, and then ssh out from there to my MD's. As to it being a bug, of this i am not sure, as it has been the same for me since I started.
Perhaps one of the more learned sages here at LMCE can better address that.
But I am glad it worked for you.
Regards,
Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: login as root on md

I thought on the MD's the only user was root.
Try this. - ssh to your core using the user linuxmce and the passwd you created on install. - then sudo su to root on your core - then ssh to the moon## of your md - this should automatically log you in as the root user, no passwd
Something else to try,, if you have a keyboard available on the MD: - ctrl-alt-F2 (gets you to a local console) - at the login prompt type "root" This should also log you in as root, no passwd required

Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / New use for scenarios, especially for parents!!!
|
on: May 19, 2009, 02:29:32 pm
|
Ok, so I am really getting into scenarios now with my current LMCE installation. In my home I have the wife, and two small girls, 3yrs old and 2yrs old. Every night at supper time, there is always a flurry of activity, and griping about leaving the TV, and coming to the dinner table. So, to help eliminate this issue I have created the "Supper Time" event on my Lighting menu in the Living Room using the Advanced Scenario Wizard. What this does is stops all media playing on both the Living Room MD and the Playroom MD. Then it turns off the lights. Next it turns on the Dining Room light. Now, there is no guessing what the girls have to do. They see the Dining Room light come on, any distractions on either TV are gone, and this helps resolve the issue of them not coming to the table. My question is this. Currently its stops the media, and this is fine. But it would be really cool if it would simply pause it. Now here is the question, I have it set to "MH Stop Media" and it turns them off. I am wondering if I use "MH Play Media" if it would pause it. I have not tried it yet, just thought I would throw it out here. If I push play on the remote for either system, it pauses the media, I am wondering if "MH Play Media" would issue the same command. This would truely make it even more cool than it already is. Thanks for your time. Regards, Seth
