LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Configure mythtv frontend on MD

If you have configured MythTV on the core which has the pvr500 card installed, you should not need to configure it on the MD. In traditional MythTV fashion, it should (in your case both tuners) be available on your MD automagically! If for whatever reason, you do not have MythTV installed, you can check this by running Mythtv-Setup from the "Computing" menu at the far right of your UI, on the core. A TV button should be presented to you on your MD, that will access whichever tuner is not in use on the core. Hope that helps. Regards, Seth

Well I will download and install it, but I had just hoped to know ahead of time what I need to do to get production back up. I run the 4/15 build on both my test and production systems, and it works great. But to know in advance in the least about the insteon cm11a stuff would have been nice. And I have satellite internet, and I have to abide by download restrictions, not unlike gazzzman, so I will probably just wait until more info is available. Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Thinking about installing LMCE and have a few things to ask
|

I run LMCE on my hp dv9033 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core Duo T5500 (1.66GHz) CPU's and 2 GB of ram. It uses the Nvidia 7300GO with 256MB dedicated. I use this as my portable core for music and videos. I also use it to test new releases of LMCE. It work flawlessly with LMCE and UI2 with alpha blending. You might have issues with your version of the nvidia card. But the latest nvidia driver resolves these I beleive. (Search forums for Enable VSYNC) My laptop has 2 HDD's SATA 100GB. Something you may want to know is if you use the DVD version of the LMCE install, it will take an entire HDD. So if you only have one, it will wipe it out. If you have 2, well you can figure that bit out . The way to circumvent this is to use the CD install method. Installing Kubuntu 710 firstly, then LMCE. This will allow you to install it in a partition, vs. taking an entire drive. As to video playback, playing a DVD will work fine for your video watching, however, if you decide to use the LMCE Rip DVD To Hard Drive option, you will need on average of 4 to 8GB of space for each movie. Music works either way using existing songs on a different disk/partiton, as well as ripping your own CD's or downloading Music with your favorite service/sources. LMCE also gives you access to the KDE Kubuntu desktop. This you can use for all other applications like open office, K3B burner, and a host of other software pre-installed. You can also add new apps to KDE via the standard Ubuntu/Kubuntu repositories. Regarding the tuner issue, I know there are a variety of supported USB Standard and HD Tuner cards. These can be found here, in the wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Category:TV_Cards Those are the currently supported plug an pray devices A laptop with dual core CPU's and the amount of RAM you have, can also function as your home CORE. It might be a laptop, but it is more powerful than most peoples desktops There is a host of info in the wiki. Almost all questions can be answered there or in the forums, and if you are having troubles, from the forums or from your favorite IRC client you can reach the brains behind the whole thing at irc.freenode.net #linuxmce. Have fun, enjoy the power of what you are about to unleash LMCE is a wonderfully "complete" entertainment solution Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / 710 RC - Changelog questions
|
on: April 23, 2008, 04:15:18 pm
|
I see that the RC will be made available for download in a few days. I have some questions regarding the changelog 1. MythTV updated to the latest fixes (is this .20 or do we now have .21?) 2. VDR Integrated into LMCE (Does this mean it is automatically installed, or will there still be choices?) 3. Fixed internal drive detection for MDs (does this eliminate the constant messages regarding it finding an in use drive?) 4. Upload pic for rooms is converted to png to be displayed both on page and on orbiter. (so now any image is automatically resized?) Also I did not see mention of 2 other enhancements important to me a. ddamron's PLM code with PNP detection included in this release b. jondecker's CM11A code included in this release These may seem like stupid questions, but rather than bark them out in the IRC room, I figured this would be a good place to ask. LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Video brightness adjustments
|
on: April 18, 2008, 03:49:28 pm

I have this issue with an older 36" TV/CRT. If you have an nvidia card, there is hope. From the kde desktop, launch a terminal, become root sudo -i Then from the terminal window run nvidia-settings nvidia-settings There is an option in the window presented for "X Server Color Correction" Select it and adjust Gamma, Contrast, and Brightness to about 3 or 4. Then exit the application. This will have created a file in roots home directory /root/ called .nvidia-settings-rc To get this to stick (and after you play around until you get the right picture quality) add the following line to /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh vi /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh add nvidia-settings --load-config-only& This will apply your changes every time the launch manager is started. Hope this helps. Regards, Seth

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Any instructions on how to get the usb uirt to learn my tv or receiver codes

So, I am not understanding what you need. You can learn the codes in the web admin, but it is not working? If this is the case, are you running an i386 version or amd64 version. I know that after LMCE 704, the USB-UIRT only works w/out IR dongles while running the amd64 version. If you are running an i386 version, a dongle is required to use the blaster feature of the usb-uirt. I have a bug report posted here: http://mantis.linuxmce.org/view.php?id=4075If tis is the case, you will need ir dongles available here: http://www.smarthome.com/8170.html?src=WG1000118&gclid=COiVwq_b4pICFQUilgodGlcj_g, or anywhere else you can manage to find one. Hope that helps. Regards, Seth

OK. Chances are changing the options via the AV Manager also changed the file to a default set like it was before. You may need to add the -dpi switch again, after running the AV Wizard. LMCE likes to overwrite changes, when it does the changes after the fact. Check the file again, and see if it did not channge back to its original form. Regards, Seth

I am going to have to step in here. If you use the CD version of the install, you have full control over what partitions to install on or create, and how big to size everything. It is a slower install than the DVD version, but, the DVD version is made for ease and simplicity. Please read the content available to you, before making hasty decisions, you may be able to do a lot more than you think. I have a system at home running, gentoo, mandriva, suse, and LMCE. This system was installed using the CDROM method. Just food for thought Regards, Seth p.s Here is a good place to start, and it was right on top in the Forums, under Installation, how ironic http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=3856.0

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: adding to the compute section of LMCE
|

I can help here. What you need to do is have a mouse/keyboard present, fire up any of the web pages from the computing screen. Now using the mouse/keyboard, type in the address of the website you wish to go to, let it load up. Now using the mouse add a bookmark. You can also at this point use the Manage Bookmarks feature of the bookmark drop down, and change any existing links, re-order them, or delete them. Now, here is the trick. You have to use the File > Exit option to close firefox. You cannot just click the power button at the bottom, or your changes will not be saved. Now the screen should close itself, and bingo!, there are your links. Regards, Seth

I was experiencing this issue not only in KDE, but while using MythTV as well. Here is what I did to resolve it: As user root from a terminal edit the /usr/pluto/bin/Start_X_Wrapper.sh script using vi or nano sudo -i nano /usr/pluto/bin/Start_X_Wrapper.sh Look for the line : xinit /usr/pluto/bin/XWM_Wrapper.sh "${Parms_Client[@]}" -- "${Parms_Server[@]}" And add either -dpi 96 or -dpi 100 to the end of it like so xinit /usr/pluto/bin/XWM_Wrapper.sh "${Parms_Client[@]}" -- "${Parms_Server[@]}" -dpi 96 And reboot the machine. This should make things quite better for you. Hope it helps. Seth

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Remote Desktop .. how can i?
|
on: April 11, 2008, 06:38:35 pm

Ok, your networking issue is because you are running 2 dhcp servers. In order for lmce to get an internet IP on the external interface, you need that nic plugged into your existing router. The internal interface needs to be on a seperate switch. Otherwise it may have the opportunity to override the existing routers dhcp server. LMCE system was designed to replace or act as your home router to the internet. I had this issue initially. How I resolved it was disabling the dhcp server on my linksys router, plugging the internet modem directly into the core's external nic, and then plugging the core's internal nic into the router. This used the core as the dhcp server, and the router for the internet (the way it was meant to be used as) and because the internal nic is plugged into the linksys router, now all my wireless and wired connections can get to the internet via the core. So you have 2 choices. 1. Get an addition switch for your internal lmce network, plug any MD's into this, and plug the core external interface into the router. 2. Plug your internet modem into the core external interface (eth0) and disable the dhcp server on your router, and plug the internal interface (eth1) into the router. Do not worry about firewalls/protection the core has all that included in its software platform. As to your remote desktop reference, In order for this to work, you need to use option 2 for your network setup. This will give your laptop an ip from the core, allowing you to be able to communicate with it. You will need to install vnc on the core, and then after getting an ip assigned from the core on your laptop, use the windows software to connect to the core. Hope this helps.

LinuxMCE / Users / 704 Issues - MD Specific
|
on: April 11, 2008, 04:47:39 pm
|
Hi all, I have recently rolled back my production system at home to 704 as this is the stable version. And it is, it just runs, no lock-ups, timeouts, etc. The issue I am having is MD specific. When I create a diskless MD, it goes through the motions and creates the image, no problem. It then boots up the MD with this image, no problem. However, on this particular MD, I have a pvr150mce card, which it sees during boot up although it fails to load the firmware, so the driver appears as failed. This is the confirmed in the setup wizard, as the card does not show up as detected or usable. OK. This I can fix. I ssh to the core from a remote terminal on my laptop, and copy the /lib/firmware folder over into /usr/pluto/diskless/<md number>. Then I reboot the MD, and bingo the cards are detected. After coming up it hangs on starting the mce_usb2 device, for the attached mce remote. Ok, I see that the lirc drivers are downloaded successfully by the message system, and I can manually do modprobe lirc_dev modprobe lirc_mceusb2 And then the remote works. So I add these two kernel modules to /etc/modules. Now on a reboot I have both the pvr150 card and the mce_usb2 remote working automagically. And then the real problem. Now when I add my Dish STB to it, it lets me set it up, and there are no issues there. I let it do the mythtv thing and download the program guide. After that is finished, I select TV from the menu, and all I get is a black screen. So I hop on an ssh session again and run dmesg, it says something along the lines of "Application is too fast for device". So I then exit out of TV mode and drop into Video mode, try to play something on the core storage, again I am vexed with the black screen. Ok, so I try Audio, and it works. Next I try "Live TV Dish 522RF" and I can watch the Dish STB no problems. So something is hosed with mythtv, and there must be an issue with network playback. Here is what I plan to do over the weekend. On the MD, I will preform a disk'd install, using the 704cd and the 2 lmce cd's. After that long process, I will try again to get things working. In the meantime, and before I put in the install time, is there anything else I can check or look into? I have deleted and recreated the diskless bit in the web admin 3 times now. Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks. Seth
