Users / Advanced Scenario Question??
« on: March 26, 2009, 05:19:57 pm »
Hi all.

I have a question as to how to set up an advanced scenario on my Living Room MD (Core/Hybrid).

Here is what I want to do:

1.) Turn off all living room lamps/lights/sconces (or make sure they are in the "Off" mode. (This is already being handled swimmingly with the lighting wizard)
2.) Have the TV in that room turn off. (And this is the part that escapes me)

Here is what I have done.

Lighting portion is good. Works great, but I would like to add a 30 second delay. So as to be able to get to the bedroom before they turn off.

However, when I choose the entry for my TV in the advanced wizard, the command box only show one thing "-no command-"

Now I know I can turn the tv off. It actually does it by itself when nothing goes on for 15 minutes, but why can't I add this to a lighting scenario?

There are no commands for "Off" or "On" ??

Also, which portion or drop down do I choose for a 30 second delay, before it powers down the lights?

Any scenario guru's wish to help out here?

Regards,

Seth

I was just curious if someone had an idea "when" or "how often" mythfilldatabase is run by LMCE.

 :)
Hi all. I have been recently playing around with the idea of adding a game console (Nintendo Wii) to my media menu, and when selecting it, have the core change the inputs on my TV to the Wii connection, and then when done using it, have LMCE switch the TV input back to the LMCE orbiter.

I am going to start by adding info about my TV/setup.

The TV is an older IR controlled 42" projection set. To switch from CVI (component video from the core/hybrid) to AV1, where the Wii is plugged in a channel down needs to be issued 2 times. And conversely to return channel up needs to be issued 2 times as well.

My first attempt at adding the Wii as an AV device, did not switch the input on my TV. There was a "Direct A/V" entry added to the menu selection, but this also did not change the TV channels.

Should this not be added as an AV device? I am sure that LMCE can control my TV. Does the volume, and the power quite well.

I guess the first thing to ask here, is should this be created as an AV device? Does a different device type need to be used?

I will look at trying this again this evening, but am I looking to start in the right place?

Thanks and Regards,

Seth

Users / Can't Modify the "Showtime" Lighting Scenario???
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:21:03 pm »
 ???
Ok, I must do this 5 times a day. The showtime lighting scenario in my living room always sets back to a default setting, turning off all the living room's perimeter lights (lamps/sconces) and dims the ceiling fan light to 10%. This happens every time some sort of media is being played, LiveTV, Videos, etc. Now I have a problem. Here is what I do:

Log into webadmin, click on the scenario.
Lamps are to shut off.
Ceiling light to stay at full.
Sconces to drop to 50%

I change this, click "Update" and then do a regen of the orbiter.
Next I am prompted to reload the router as "something has changed"
I do so, and it all goes back to the default of perimeter off, ceiling to 10%

What am I doing wrong. Am I missing a step? I just don't get it.

Is there something that is overwriting the scenario to a default?

Also in the family room, it turns off the lamps on the bookcase, and dims the cieling light there to 30%.

When I change this to off or on, it reverts back to default.

I don't know what else to try. I am open to any suggestions.

Regards,

Seth

 ???
Hello all.

I have a question. I was wondering what steps I can take to get the auto-generated "Showtime" lighting scenario available to all MD's with LMCE controlled Lighting.

I have tried creating a Showtime scenario for each MD, or EA, that has lighting controlled by the system. However, the only one that works is the original one Sarah created for the core/hybrid.

Is it as simple as running the Media Player wizard again?
Does the scenario need to be created with the advanced wizard vs. the lighting wizard?

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate your input.

Thanks, and Regards,

Seth

Users / Can not use media or lighting map on UI2-Alpha blended MD??
« on: February 03, 2009, 06:57:35 pm »
 ???
Ok. So last evening I was trying to flip some media from the living room system into the playroom. It uses UI2-Alpha Blended. I called up the media map, went to select the playroom and the media that was playing, and using my gyration remote, and my mce remote, it will not allow me to select anything.

Now, this is the first time I tried this from anything other than the orbiter I run on my laptop. But out of curiosity, i went into the playroom, which runs UI1 and was successful in switching the media, i.e I was able to select the MD, and the media. I could also do this from my MD in the Man Cave, which runs UI2-Masked.

So I went back into the Living room on the UI2-Alpha Blended and figured I would try the Lighting Map. Same result.

So I am guessing something is awry with my UI1-Alpha Blended Orbiter.

I usually use the laptop to do these things, so this may be old news, as I have never seen it before, but then again I have always used UI2-Masked in the living room until recently.

Just thought I would post to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Seth

Users / Insteon not working - Need some ruby guidance
« on: January 02, 2009, 04:45:59 pm »
 ???
Ok. Over the holidays, I built my core from scratch, changing the main drive to a 500G SATA disk, to allow for recordings from mythtv. Now after I had the core discover all my media drives, and set them up, everything is working great. So I figure I would get my insteon set up running again.

Rather than use my old devices, I decided to start with the new http://www.smarthome.com/2490/Lamp-Scene-Kit-INSTEON-Lighting-Starter-Kit/p.aspx "LampLinc Starter Kit" that I received as a gift. I went through the set up, placed my access points, and the lamp modules, got them all married up, and then decided to try to get my PLM runnning.

So I followed the wiki entry here: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Insteon_-_Setting_Up_PLM_Template , just like I did on my original install. However this time, it is not working correctly. I am getting this in the log for the device:

Code: [Select]

It repeats itself over and over of course. Now It has been an eternity since I set it up with my old installation, and I am probably missing some little thing, but I just can't figure it out, so I thought I would place my findings here, in case someone else has run across this issue.

Thanks, and Regards,

Users / CIFS errors causing ugly Lag and eventually crashing!!
« on: December 19, 2008, 01:35:37 pm »
Ok,

So my new setup has been running for almost 3 months now, and in that time I only had to reboot my core for hardware changes. However just the other day, we had a power outage, and the system was in full swing, watching TV in the living room, girls watching videos in the family room, me playing audio in the basement. After the power returned, and running the mysql repair mythconverg for the crashed db, it seemed to work fine.

Now as of yesterday, the system is locking up. However it is only doing so when I boot my Living room MD.
The family room MD runs great, no errors are reported.
The living room gets about all the way booted up, and then I am seeing this on the core syslog:

Eventually the MD gets booted up, although painfully slowly, and then after it is up there is noticeable hanging by the entire box. So last night I rebuilt the MD, deleted the old one, then added a new one. It gets up as far as running through the sarah bits, and then it starts to hang again. This MD has 3 storage drives on it, 2 internal SATA disks, and 1 External Mybook.

I have 2 questions:

1. Does the core use CIFS to attach to these drives that are local to the MD.

2. Is there a way to re-install the CIFS/Samba server bits on the core, to see if it somehow got corrupted?

And the end all option is to re-install the core, which I do not really want to do, but will if necessary.

It seems that CIFS issues should be easily trouobleshot and resolved, however my googling has not payed off yet.

I ask for guidance in this issue, or experiences from other users out there.

Thanks, and Regards,

Seth

Users / Random Pauses during Media Playback.
« on: December 16, 2008, 01:46:12 pm »
 ???
Over the past couple of weeks, I have migrated my media storage, to my central core server. I am noticing now, random "freezes" while watching items that are now stored on the core.

My core is an hp Proliant ML300 G3 server. It has a pci gigabit ethernet adapter, broadcomm, and is attached to a Trendnet gigabit switch. I am thinking I may have a bottleneck in the server itself that is causing this random hiccup.

It is most noticeable while watching recorded shows, and then next noticeable while watching MythTV. My tuner cards are located in my Living Room MD, which uses gigabit ethernet to the core, I have watched the traffic using IPTraf application. My data streams are not being hindered by the network. As this server did not have a SATA interface for my drives, I added a SATA 1 card (150kbs) and plugged in my 2 SATA 7200 RPM drives. One is 80G and the other is 500G.

At first I suspected this card, as it is the slower SATA variant than the newer SATA cards. So I did a test, and remounted my MythTV storage drive on the 100G IDE drive that holds the OS, and MD Images. I still get the same pause during MythTV playback, and while watching the MythTV recordings. So that makes me look at the network again. But I get 1000MB Full Duplex on both the MD and the core according to ethtool. The MD is a dual core AMD x2 5000+ at 2.6GHz, the core is a dual core Xeon 2.8GHz. The core has 2.5G of ram and the MD has 2G of ram.

I guess I am not sure where to look here. I also have an external 500G WD MyBook, that when plugged into the USB1.1 jacks of the core, caused stuttering on occasion as well, albeit more regularly than the OnBoard storage, I took this drive and moved it up to the MD, and it plays back flawlessly.

I am guessing my bottleneck is on the core side of the house, and was wondering what logs to look at. Tail-ing /var/log/messages only show the constant mounting of media drives in the core, dmesg does complain quite a bit, ironically during the media pauses I am seeing, about CIFS mount errors Code -6. So which log should I be looking at to determine what is happening here?

Any guidance or inputs, as well as ideas are openly welcome. I have debated putting all the media drives on the MD and utilizing two of its 6 SATA 3 ports, to see if the issue persists.

Thanks and Regards,

Seth

Marketplace / Looking for a compatible DVD Changer for my system!
« on: December 16, 2008, 01:21:47 pm »
 :)
Hey all,

Does anyone know where I can get a compatible DVD changer? I would like to get a Powerfile, but they are far and few between these days. Does anyone know of another unit that works well with LMCE. I am getting frustrated these days, with DVD's that I can not rip, but would like to have on demand when I have a moment to watch a good movie/concert/comedy show.

If anyone has any ideas, or even has one they would like to sell. Please post here, so that I may look into getting one.

Thanks and Regards,

Seth

Users / SymLink for MythTV recordings, randomly disappearing!! How to stop?
« on: December 15, 2008, 05:58:53 pm »
OK.
So I received a nice new 500G drive for my MythTV recordings. As my system drive on the core is 100G, and holds images for all my MD's I need more space. So I did the following:

Code: [Select]
mkdir /mnt/device/278/tv_shows
cd /home/public/videos/tv_shows_63  <--- moon number with tuners
mv * /mnt/device/278/tv_shows/ <--- so as not to get duplicate recording entries, I created the directory below the pluto structure.
cd ..
rm -r tv_shows_63/
ln -s /mnt/device/278/tv_shows/ tv_shows_63

Now this woks rather well. However, I noticed on Sunday morning, that it had created a new tv_shows_63 folder, and it had none of my recordings. Now this can again be fixed by repeating the above steps, but what do I have to disable to prevent it from doing this again?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and Regards,

Seth

Users / Gaming on your LMCE system?
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:35:59 pm »
 :)
We all know Thom's work with Mame, and its integration into LMCE. Its nothing short of fracking fantstic. As is Thom. But I was recently forum hopping and I saw this:

indulis - its certainly true that you might want the extra grunt for other reasons. eg I recently added Savage 2 to the Computing menu (actually works v nicely, makes it much easier for my partner to play games!) Savage 2 is V heavy on graphics, my 7300GT is just about coping, so I'm glad I got it in the end.

The AGP thing is very strange! In fact according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NvAGP it really shouldn't make any difference even if it was an AGP card....

Now this intrigues me. And rather than Highjacking that particular thread, I thought I would start a new one here, and see how many other people are doing something like this.

So I raise some questions, particularly for Colin, but this is a community forum, so that opens up all kinds of possibilities.

1. Would this have to be done on a core, or would a MD be able to pull off an OpenGL game?

2. What kind of control would/does one use.
a.) Just standard keyboard and mouse
  b.) A gamepad
  c.) Gaming joystick

3. If running on an MD, what kind of stress would this place on a regularly used deployment, i.e Multiple MD's

4. How well would Multiplayer (internal) work out between MD's
    * Battle for Wesnoth
    * Nexuiz: FPS game based on Dark Places, an advanced Quake 1 engine
    * Sauerbraten: Single/multi-player FPS game
    * Second Life: 3D MMORPG virtual world
    * All the Quakes
    * All the Unreal Tournaments
    * All the Doom's
    * The Valve Games

5. Would an MD with a good Nvidia based or ATI based GPU be adequate to run games of these types over a diskless network based OS?

Please add your experiences, and input here. Maybe we can even get a Wiki going. In fact, if given the opportunity, I might even start it myself.

How cool is LMCE?? Huh? Huh?  ;)

Seth

Developers / Location in the database for Media Scenarios?
« on: December 03, 2008, 04:59:17 pm »
I have rebuilt my living room MD several times. The issue is, every time I rebuilt it, some of the  media scenarios have stuck around, to the point where now it is mostly triple in size for the same set of scenarios.

I was wondering if anyone knew what table they are held in, so I can go delete the ones that are no longer in use.

Thanks,

Seth

 ;D
Hello all. I have seen some posts about this motherboard, and there is the wiki entry http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Asus_M3A78-EM which I will be updating, as I get things going. Last evening I sat down and decided to resolve the issue I was having with my new Living Room MD System Board.

The problem I was having was the NIC (Realtek 8111B/8111C) was using the r8169 driver on a tftpboot. This was fine, the image loaded right up, and then prompty reported "eth0:link down" not unlike a lot of posts concerning the Asus Eeepc boards/systems, as well as some of the Atom systems. So I immediately hit up the forums and the wiki for the answer. I found the excellent wiki entry by totallymaxed http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/R8168 and the unrecognized NIC wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Unrecognized_NIC, and decided that I should start the process. I went out and downloaded the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2 and followed the wiki. But after it was all finished up. I got the same results. And even a couple of times I got the kernel panic device not found error seen in these forums.

So here is how I solved it:

First I manually created the Media Director from the Web Admin page. Did not want it to build an AMD64 image, wanted to stay with i386, and I knew the MAC address of the new MD onboard NIC. Ran "Setup Diskless MD" when that completed I clicked the "Rebuild Image" for the new MD. While that was running I completed the next few things.

I went to Asus' web site and downloaded the drivers for linux for my board the M3A78-EM. The file was called "LinuxDrivers.zip" and contained the LAN as well as the VGA (ATI HD3200) drivers in the archive file. So I downloaded it, http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=M3A78-EM extracted it to my core's /usr/src folder, and then went into the LAN directory it created. From there I followed the 8168 wiki entry, and completed the steps.

Code: [Select]
sudo su
cd /usr/src/LinuxDrivers/LAN/r8168-8.003.00/r8168-8.003.00
make
cp src/r8168.ko /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/
mv /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8169.ko /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8169.ko.not
depmod -a
/usr/pluto/bin/Diskless_BuildDefaultImage.sh

Fired up top on the core to verify that the image was done building, no random bzip2's running and what not, and then...

Next I copied the driver from Asus over to my MD's filesystem:
Code: [Select]
cp /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8168.ko /usr/pluto/diskless/<moon #>/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net
vi /usr/pluto/diskless/<moon #>/etc/initramfs-tools/modules
added r8168 and saved
cd /usr/pluto/diskless
chroot <moon #>
depmod -a /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/net/r8168.ko
cd /boot
update-initramfs -uv
(scrolled up to verify the new module was added it was at the top of the output)
for S and G's ran depmod -a again
exit out of the chroot

Now I went into the living room and powered on the system. And it booted without a hitch. To my pleasant suprise, I was eventually greeted by Sarah, asking me if I could see and hear her  :)

Some info on this system, with current prices:

Motherboard - Asus M3A78-EM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131324&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-
CPU - AMD64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103211&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

These were on a combo deal for $114.99 free shipping as of last week. Excellent buy, and now with this info it will boot  ;)

Memory OCz Platinum 2G 2x1G DDR2 1066 (Makes use of the native 1066 on the Motherboard) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227178&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

This is currently on sale for $28.99, but there is shipping  :(

So the next thing I will be doing is using the Asus Drivers for the ATI card (HD3200) and see if I can get that working, wiki update to follow there as well.

Well I hope this helps someone. It sure made my evening.

Regards,

Seth

I know I should get a build environment up and running on my new core, and perhaps over the Holidays I will do so, but I have an MD that uses the Realtek Gigabit on board NIC card, and was wondering if anyone could make the module available for download?

Thanks for your time,

Regards,

Seth
