Hello everyone,
I've got a couple of items no longer in use and thought I'd offer them up to the forum prior to posting them on ebay.

I've got 1 USB-UIRT ($40 plus shipping) and 1 Fiire Chief Remote with manual and 2 dongles ($140 plus shipping). I'd prefer to only ship within the US so as to avoid all of the export paper work. My prices are not extremely firm but both of these items were very lightly used. The remote looks brand new!

I'm also having this issue when I have 0704 installed. However, 0710 beta 2 does not seem to have the same problem on my system.

One more note on the "Add Software" screen.
When I click on a package to install it, I get a screen saying it could take up to 30 minutes to download and install (this part is normal). After clicking "Yes", I'm taken back to the "Add Sofware" screen and I then receive a message in the upper left corner that says
"Installation of libdvdcss aborted: Download of valid source for package failed"

Thanks for the replies..
I went into the Admin site and verified that my external card is using DHCP and the address is inside the scope that my DSL modem gives out.
Here's the pertinent network info:
DSL Router Internal Interface:
192.168.0.1
DHCP Scope
192.168.0.2-254

Core External Interface eth1
IP address from DHCP
192.168.0.4
Default Gateway:
192.168.0.1 (DSL Modem)

I went ahead and clicked on Update after verifying the settings in the Admin website. This seemed to make a bit of a difference since with the "Add Software" screen from the Setup Wizard. The programs are now listed in the area that was black and empty before.

However, the flickr screen saver is still not working (I just have a black background and the menu's along the bottom of the screen)
The cd id program is also not working though.

If I go to the KDE desktop, I am able to browse the web just fine though.

I do not currently have anything hooked up to my Internal interface on the Core as this is my only machine on that network. I'll be adding MD's when I get the core up and running.

Any other ideas?

I'll start off my post by saying this seems network related..

After some issues and some new equipment that I wanted to add to the system (USB-UIRT and Zwave controller). I decided I'd like to do a fresh install. However, after installing I noticed that some of the screens in the setup wizard (particularly the one where you add the win32codec and dvdcss) seemed to have a black area with nothing in them to select. During my last install of 0710, I was able to click and highlight the packages to install and everything worked fine.
After completing the setup without adding the dvdcss and w32codecs, I noticed that my flickr screen saver was not running. I have a black background and the menus along the bottom to navigate with. I try to play a CD or DVD and the media is not identified.

At this point, I'm thinking I have a network issue going on so I go to the KDE Desktop and open a terminal window. Ping my external interface, good. Ping my DSL Router, good. Ping www.google.com, good. Open a browser, go to www.google.com, good.

Is there something I'm missing? My hardware is listed in my sig and I am currently setup with UI2 with blending. I've tried switching to regular UI2 and that made no difference.

Funny thing is, I had a relatively fresh install of 0704 going this afternoon without problem. (I just had to muck with it and go back to 0710 beta 2 so that my DVD audio and video would be in sync.)

By the way, I've reinstalled this system quite a few times now between 0704 and 0710 beta2. I'm just trying to get a totally stable setup going then I promise to leave it alone.


I searched around for an answer but didn't find any that look like they related to this issue so my apologies if it's already been answered somewhere else. Thanks for your help in advance.

SOLVED:
THANK YOU GUYS!!!

I had just swapped out the drive and not the cable. I made the assumption that the new cable that came with my mobo couldn't be bad. WRONG!
Swapping out the cable solved the issues being logged to /var/log/messages and also seems to have cleaned up the DVD playback.

No dice there either. My system is currently setup with the 250 gig drive on a sata connection. The only thing on the IDE cable is the DVD drive. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion.
In my last post I mentioned swapping out the DVD drive and still having the same issues.
I'm wondering if I need to install 0704 again to see if DMA is turned off on that one as well. Possibly it's just something to do with this 0710 beta 2 build? I would think others would notice and would have complained of these choppy playback issues as well if it was a 0710 beta 2 issue.

I'm also wondering if I might be better off going with a SATA DVD drive?
It seems that there are quite a few using LinuxMCE with success. I'm going with the quote from "The Edge" on this one. "What one man can do, another can do!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZS14_yec3A
I just need to find the key to fixing this problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I went ahead and updated the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to add the ide=nodma. Here's the area of that file that I modified.
title           Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic

kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash ide=nodma
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

I rebooted after making the change and it seemed to make no difference. Video playback is still very choppy.

I decided that maybe it was the DVD drive so I swapped it out for another one. (Lite-On SHW-1635S) and I'm having the same issues.
On bootup, the hdparm /dev/hdc still shows;
 using_dma     =  0 (on)
However, after putting a DVD in the drive, it switches the output of the hdparm /dev/hdc command to:
 using_dma     =  0 (off)
It's still showing the same messages in the /var/log/messages file about disabling DMA. (see OP)

What's odd is that this is the same mobo used in the video if I'm not mistaken, I've had issues playing DVD's on both 0704 and 0710 now. Am I the only one experiencing this issue?

With 0710 things are choppy. I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong....


I'm not even sure if DMA is the issue. Are there any other avenues that I might want to look into to improve the DVD playback experience?

Thanks for the response.

A) It does seem that the hdparm values are carried between reboots because the dma is on when I first start up the machine without a DVD in the drive. However, dma turns off after putting the DVD in and the error messages in the OP are displayed in /var/log/messages. Running hdparm -i /dev/hdc after putting the DVD in the drive shows that it is turned off after loading the DVD.

B) Here's the output
linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash

I tried adding the ide=nodma using vi but it will not allow me to save the file.
I read something about the file cannot be modified directly using vi but can't quite figure out the syntax to get the info in the file and not loose the line that's already in there.
Here's what I tried:
linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ gksudo echo 'ide=nodma' >/proc/cmdline
-bash: /proc/cmdline: Permission denied

Not sure if this is the right area to post this so please let me know if there's another place that's more appropriate.
I have a Hybrid system (specs are in my sig). I'm working through some of my issues since downloading LinuxMCE and going through the install process.
I am currently using 0710 beta2 since I had quite a few problems getting the audio and video to sync up during DVD playback on 0704.

My current issue is getting playback on DVD's to smooth out. They are very choppy. After doing some research, I see that DMA is getting disabled after I put a DVD in the system. Below are the related messages from /var/log/messages.

--Notice that the using_dma parameter is set to off. I turn it on and tell it to keep the settings after reboot with the following command.

--After running this command and rebooting, the settings are kept until I put in a DVD and then the drive is switched to using_dma = off again.
I have verified IDE cable is connected properly and have even switched out with another one to rule that out.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Are you experiencing this as well?
