How stable is 1004 for playing movies only?  I'm not ready to roll out any other features but would like to fire it up just to play video for now.  I have a couple of Asus B202's that I use for MD's.

Reinstall seems to have fixed it.

Yes, when I found the wiki, I did check the sources.list and avenard was not listed.  I'm currently doing a complete reinstall.

The error in the wiki article that I linked is my exact error.

My main issue is that my wife and kids are very very attached to the Fiire remote.  I installed 810 and the limited functionality for that remote is a deal breaker.  I tried the torrent but there is only 2 seeders and the download stalled.

If there is an .iso location someone could provide, I'd be very grateful.

Is there anyplace to still download 710?

I only see the mobo's on newegg, not the barebone machine.  Would you be kind enough to post a link to the barebone?

I wanted to try one of these but everyone is saying it's discontinued.

I've got a commercial installation that has 17 MD's.  However, there are only a few different video streams feeding at one time.  Typically 3 different video files playing on a few TV's each and a number of still images displayed on other TV's.  I currently do not have any problems, but when setting it up I tried playing different video on each TV and after 7 or 8 I began to notice video/audio stutter. 

I didn't do any extensive testing as the system design wasn't intended to support that many different streams.  I'm only posting this to support the other replies in that I don't think one core could support that many MD's.  I would probably look at something like colin is suggesting, break up the campus into "zones" with a core in each.  For live TV this shouldn't be an issue as you can assign tv feeds as you like. 

With regards to stored media this raises an interesting question that maybe someone else could answer.  The question is, can multiple cores share a networked storage device?  i.e. Could you locate all your stored media on a NAS device and have all the cores use it?  If so, then that's what I'd do.  It gives you distributed processing while maintaining centralized storage.

Don't know if I helped at all but I hope so.  Please keep us updated, I'm interested in how this turns out.

I'm very sorry but this: tar -xjf <path to dshowserver-ia32-r63-gentoo.tar.bz2 is just plain wrong, either you are telling tar to read from a file and then redirect a file to it's standard input instead, or you're intending a <placeholder> but you forgot the ">".  Instead I don't really see much of a problem with tar -xjf <path/to/>dshowserver-ia32-r63-gentoo.tar.bz2, so please enlighten me.

If you'll check the man page, you'll find that: patch -p1 < <path to coreavc-for-linux>/xine/dshowserver.patch is actually equivalent to: patch -Np1 -i <path/to/coreavc-for-linux/>xine/dshowserver.patch.  With the added benefit of quitting if the patch was already applied, instead of asking to reverse the patch instead which can be confusing. 

Now obviously pasting things with <placeholders> isn't going to work when you copy/paste them literally anyway, but the real problem however was because you misspelled "libxine" in the first place.  So thanks for your lovely "compliment", but the only one that messed up here was you.  It's a bit sad to see you (and nobody but you) complain about these non-related trivial things to cover that up though.

And no, I haven't tried it myself because I don't see this problem at all (apart from that I am not a big fan of closed source software).  But if I had, we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion now would we?

I can't imagine why more people don't try to help with the project considering the warm reception efforts are met with.  LOL

I have a 710 installation at work and a 704 installation at home.  Can't really speak to the home one as I use it to tinker so I break it about twice a week.  The installation at work is used to demo a home theater system that includes LMCE for DVD/Music only (no lighting, alarm, surveillance, etc.) and it runs rock solid.  I can't remember the last time I had to reload or reboot the system.  But again, it's only being used to rip/play movies and music so there isn't much going on with it.

I have a PVR-500 Hauppauge card

In 0704 the quality for me was absolutely horrible. I remember asking myself why anyone in thier right mind would even use MythTV if this was the quality they would be watching it in - so I never used MythTV in 0704 (I'd never used MythTV before this)
. When I reinstalled with 0710, I figured that I would check the liveTV again. I'm not sure what changed (or if there was some other tuning I could have done under 0704) - but capturing via s-video now has beautiful picture quality. It would take a pretty good eye to spot the degradation from the original. Its so good, that I even record movies and Pay-Per-View movies for permanent inclusion into my media library.

How are you getting Pay-Per-View to record? 

I've tried with a Comcast box as well as a DirecTV box and in both cases I can only view ppv by switching to the box (not going through MythTV).  i.e. On my Comcast box on-demand is channel 1, when I tell MythTV to tune to Ch1 I get nothing.

This is an interesting thread to me.  I've ordered 2 servers (one the 7.04 model and one the 7.10 version), a total of 13 MD's (3 of the old ones and 10 of the new prestige boxes) and 3 remotes with 13 dongles.

I was charged correctly, they shipped within the 2-4 weeks they had promised and to date everything is running perfectly.

It is noteworthy that with both of these systems are limited to DVD/CD storage and playback.  No lighting, alarm, video surveillance and the like, strictly store and play DVD's and CD's.

The older equipment is sitting in our home theater showroom connected to a D-Box motion couch and an overhead projector, with 2 MD's connected to LCD TV's in another room.  We've had no problems with the system and it's a big hit with home media people.  We'll be showing that system at our second Home and Garden Show this October. 

With the commercial installation the customer gets promo video's on CD that he rips to the server then plays on 6 TV's throughout his building and he is extremely happy with the system's performance.

As far as tech support:  I only had occasion to contact them twice and in both cases the people I spoke to through their online chat were helpful and solved my issues.

I did have a number of problems when I first started learning the system, but that was clearly my ignorance of Linux, nothing related to the Fiire equipment.  Mostly, it was me "tinkering" with the system to better understand it's capabilities and limitations.

Also, I did have many problems when I tried to install 7.10 on the older equipment, but installing 7.04 from the DVD provided by Fiire was smooth and trouble free.  It seems that the older MD's are NOT compatible with 7.10.

I'm not sure if the reason I've had no trouble is that I'm not doing much with the systems in terms of LMCE's advertised capabilities but sticking to the "out of box" installation with no customizations has been flawless for me so far.  I, myself am not a coder and have no interest in becoming one.  I was looking for a cheaper media server solution to Kaleidescape and I've found it with LMCE.  Fiire, to this point has been a reliable source for hardware and software that keeps our installation/configuration labor down and I'm careful not to advertise/promise features of LMCE that aren't 100% reliable.

With my personal system at home (custom server with 2 Fiire MD's and the Fiire remote), I tinker around and experiment all the time and the system spends more time down than up, but again, that's due to my monkeying around, no reflection on LMCE or Fiire at all.

We plan on upgrading our demo system to the new equipment before our upcoming show and I intend to implement Z-Wave lighting.  I'll post again with my experience.

I'm ordering a couple of these along with the new server in the next couple of weeks.  I'll let you know how it goes.
