Users / Re: MythTV's Internal Guide
« on: April 02, 2008, 07:50:14 pm »
What I found is that once I installed the cable box as a device in LMCE, Myth kind of "figured out" that the box is where the channel gets changed.

You do have to have some type of controller for the cable box (UIRT, Serial, etc.)  Once I got the box and UIRT setup then asked Myth to change the channel, the actual tuner card stayed on channel 3 and the cable box changed to the channel I wanted.

On a side note:  There is considerable lag using the UIRT to control the cable box (1-2 seconds between the time I push the channel up button and the channel actually changing)  my box doesn't have the serial connector so I don't know if that method is faster.

Although I haven't tried it, I don't believe you can record one channel and watch another with this configuration as the channel is being controlled by the cable box and the box can only tune one channel at a time.

Hope this helped.

edit:  oddly enough, when I did an apt-get install ddrescue it completed, but there was no ddrescue.  After poking around I found dd_rescue????

I don't know about that, when I saw the reference to ddrescue I just went to a command line and typed it and it worked.  No install, no path, just # ddrescue....

By slow I mean regular method usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, the ddrescue method takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Fantastic!  If that works seamlessly I'm happy to dump vlc to get an option that works from within lmce.

Before you try creating a new menu for a separate rip method, you might want to give a different DVD a try, something that works quick with the disk_copy method.  The slowdown may just be a result of a ton of bad blocks.

OK, I used the ddrescue method on a disc I had previously ripped with the disk_copy method and it is still slow so I'm going to go ahead with the second menu option.  I'll keep you updated.

SUCCESS!!!

OK, I substituted the ddrescue command for the disk_copy command in the ripDiskWrapper.sh file:

Old command:

command='/usr/pluto/bin/disc_unlock "$sourceDevice"; nice -n 15 /usr/pluto/bin/disk_copy "$sourceDevice" "$targetFileName.dvd.in-progress" > '"$ProgressOutput"

New command:

command='/usr/pluto/bin/disc_unlock "$sourceDevice"; nice -n 15 ddrescue -n "$sourceDevice" "$targetFileName.dvd.in-progress" > '"$ProgressOutput"

I used ddrescue because it copies the disk straight to iso/dvd format.  Now I can use the Orbiter interface and choose Copy disk and it will copy any disc perfectly.  The downside is this method takes WAY longer to copy so what I'm going to attempt is create a new menu item for this type of copy so I'll have one button for the quick copy and another button for this copy if a movie fails using the first one.

Another issue I'm having (but not really one of importance) is using the ddrescue method the percentage doesn't show up when you view the progress.  I'll look into that later.

Holy Cow, I think I just contributed something to this project.

OK, after some investigation (please remember that I'm new to LMCE and Linux in general), I've discovered that it seems that the ripping function is performed by the command /usr/pluto/bin/disk_copy which is being called from /usr/pluto/bin/ripDiskWrapper.sh.

Here is the section of script that seems to be executing the command:

case $diskType in
   2)
      ProgressOutput='>(/usr/pluto/bin/DiskCopy_ProgressExtract.sh|/usr/pluto/bin/Pluto_Progress.sh "$diskDriveDeviceID" "$jobID" "$taskID")'
      command='/usr/pluto/bin/disc_unlock "$sourceDevice"; nice -n 15 /usr/pluto/bin/disk_copy "$sourceDevice" "$targetFileName.dvd.in-progress" > '"$ProgressOutput"

I've searched my ass off for switches for the disk_copy command but I only find references to the Mac command.  Anybody know where I can find out about this command or if I'm even on the right track?

I'm hoping that I'll be able to add a switch that will ignore errors or something and enable me to rip newer DVD's.

Thanks

Thanks for the replys guys and the help is much appreciated.

I'm going to try both of those methods, however the ultimate goal is to get this thing to a point that an 8 year old could walk up to my TV, drop in a movie and choose "Copy Disc" from the menu.

Can any of these solutions be implemented through the UI?

You don't need to update libdvdcss. It decrypts them well. It is a ripper that is failing. Different program, different place.

I'm yet again confused.  What do you mean "ripper"?  What exactly do I need to look for as a seemless solution?

Does anyone know how likely it will be for someone to update libdvdcss to handle decrypting newer discs?

I searched for it online, but never found any mention of a new version coming out.

If there's no hope of an update, I'll have to scrap LMCE all together and I'd like to know before investing anymore time or money into it.

Thanks

I've got a Fiire Engine running 0710B4 and it seems to run well.

I also have one each of the 3 Fiire Stations and I'm getting an error that a device didn't start properly whenever I boot them.  They continue to come up but when I go to the add software screen to add DVD CSS on the MD, it's blank.  I have the bars that would normally have the name of the software to install but no text inside them and they are unresponsive when I click on them.

I haven't looked into a fix at all yet.

I'm having the same issue as well.  Contacting Fiire yielded a response of "0710 is beta and not stable".

If anybody smarter than me (just about everybody) comes up with a solution I would love you long time.

Users / Fiire Station Audio Problem
« on: March 21, 2008, 09:24:26 pm »
OK, I've got a couple of Fiire Stations and they setup fine except there is no audio out of the L/R RCA jacks.

I'm selecting "Analog Stereo" in the AV Wizard, I've tested the inputs on the TV I'm using and I can get audio from a DVD player so I know there's no problem there.  It seems the FS just isn't putting audio out.

I spent 2 hours with Fiire on their chat and was left with "I have to research it".  I've been told that before and never got a response.

Has anybody setup the Fiire Stations using the analog RCA jacks for audio and how did you make it work?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I did see that post and I am able to use a similar method to rip dvd's on my Windows box then copy them to my Core.

I was hoping there might be a solution to fix the DVD rip function in LMCE.  I've been touting this system to many friends and things like this would be beyond their ability.

Does anyone know if there's a fix or modification I can make to the Core to get by this?

Finally got my core and 2 MD's running great!  (Ultimately involved installing 0704 then upgrading to 0710B4 then removing devices and redetecting them, but that's another story)

Anyway, I'm now ripping DVD's to the core and some of them fail.  I notice that it only occurs on newer movies and I've seen a reference somewhere to dummy sectors as a ripping protection method on some DVD's.

Is that the case and is there a way around it?

Users / Wireless Keyboard/Trackball(or Touchpad)
« on: March 19, 2008, 07:38:42 pm »
I'm looking for suggestions on a good wireless keyboard/trackball(or touchpad) all in one type thing.  There are a million of them out there and I don't see any specific models listed on hardware wiki.

Anybody using one or know of one that works well with LMCE?  I only want it for browsing the web, I have a Fiire remote for all other functions.
