Users / Good Hardware to make this thing rock.
« on: December 14, 2007, 04:51:28 pm »
I'm going to be building a system for my home, can anyone help me with a known working hardware list.

I want good gear that won't be buggy and will perform excellent, price is not an issue up to about 5K.

The system will consist of the core and three clients, I'll only be using it for AV right now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit:
Before Thom rips me again to read the wiki, I have seen the hardware section.  What I'm hoping for is user input on hardware they've used and that works well.  :)

Any media director (PC running the LinuxMCE software booted from the network), can independently access media stored at the core, or on the network.

This is by design.

Please read the wiki, a lot of the questions you are asking, have already been answered there.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a bone head I guess, but when you say "wiki", to what are you referring exactly?  I read the user and installation guides and didn't see any reference to this.  Is there somewhere else I need to look?

The other half of this question that I didn't express clearly enough is: Do I need any special hardware considerations to do this?  For instance would I have to proportionally beef up the Core in relation to the number of TV's I might be using, etc?

Does LinuxMCE do this?

Play one movie in the living room while someone else plays a different movie/music in another room?

If so, is there any special consideration/hardware to make it happen?

Thx

I've also just began looking at this and being unfamilar with Linux and MCE's in general, I've got a few questions.

What I'm looking for is something like the Kaleidescape system that I can rip my dvd's to a controlling server then be able to access the movies at my tv using a remote control.  I see that LMCE seems to have this functionality, however I'm unclear on the tv controlling devices.  It seems that they're PC's, can they be controlled via an IR remote or do you have to have a mouse and keyboard?

Ultimately, I want a system that operates like a normal DVR so people like my parents and kids can watch movies in any room in the house with no computer knowledge.

Thanks
