So, we need a device that is capable of receiving messages from the dcerouter, and sending messages to the dcerouter.

This DCE device needs to be able to receive notification messages from the outside world and translate those messages to DCE messages. And this DCE device needs to receive DCE messages and send them to the outside, in whatever format necessary.

Doesn't that sound a bit like a GSD with the serial/IR part removed?

if sound is not working, you might want to take a look at the Sound Cards wiki entry. Especially the CK804 nvidia chipset does have quirks now and then. Especially over S/P-DIF as (K)Ubuntu 0710 contains a bug in there alsa configuration.

yes, you can't take a template out, that is in sqlCVS. Reason is: The exporter looks for the psc_mod date. If it is 0 it does not get exported.

The reason behind the exporter is, that you can save your own av device templates, and don't have to relearn your remotes due to a needed reinstall of lmce. Also, it allows for people to exchange the av device profiles with each other.

Is that an existing template you are trying to Export, or did you create it new? It is definitly more complex than any of the ones I have played with. Is the device working correct?

A brief look just shows that it might be the length of the insert statement.

I will look into it. But please post any information you have for this as well.

Also keep in mind, that you don't NEED to build for all UIs. Start with a UI as a UI1 replacement for example, and build it. After re-building all the screens for a new design, you WILL have such a good understanding on how things work, that adding support for the other devices will be trivial for you.

3. How or where can I found out how methods are called and who calls them? I don't understand the relationship between  "command groups", "events" and the "device category" and how they effect what GSD methods get called and by what.  Could someone explain this a little more?

A little note on command groups etc. On the orbiter when you click a button, a commandgroup gets executed. This commandgroup can contain multiple Command entries, which in turn send messages to devices or device categories. The difference is for example, if you just want to turn off all media devices in a room, you don't send a message to a single media device, but to a group "Media Devices" (I don't know if such a group really exists, but you hopefully get my point). Events happen and execute command groups.

You do not need to know Ruby to do a GSD. Basically all you do is <$"\x0201POF\x03"$>  <-- This transmits 0x02 01POF 0x03  over rs-232. Have a look at Device Template 1779, the Pioneer Elite TV. It shows very nicely, how easy it is to do a simple GSD.

After you have your device controlled to do stuff, you can look at the Yamaha RX-V1500 template and add receiving capabilities to your device, so you will be able to let LinuxMCE know, when you did something on the box itself.

Again, this has nothing to do with knowing Ruby, but it helps to know a tiny little bit programming, even if it was just a single high school class in "Programming 101" during spring break

there is a wiki entry on the provider 1und1, which details what needs to be setup, if you have your core not connected with a public IP address.

re Z-Wave thermostats: Tschak, the Z-Wave thermostats only do setbacks, and not full control of the heating. IMHO, a setback of 4 degrees celsius should be enough, but thatcrazyperson123 explicitly stated he does not want it.

Hey, I'm new here (if you haven't noticed).  I understand how to set up a Linux MCE whole-house system, I just have some questions.
1. For the phone system, I have an analog POTS line direct into my house.  To integrate this into the Linux MCE system would I need an FXO card? Is it even possible?

as bulek pointed out, either a plugged in card, or IMHO a better solution, an external box. The external box does not have any interrupt problems, no driver problems.

2. We are getting the heating redone.  I want Z-wave, X10, or any other Linux MCE controllable thermostats, but I want ones that don't cost too much (and don't point me in the direction of setback controllers!), but if you have any suggestions that would be totally awesome.

It would help, if you detailed where you are living, and what kind of a/c or heating system you have.
