Sounds interesting.
20-30MDs with standard def video means quite a bit of bandwidth needed. Would each MD need a dedicated stream, or all of the MDs going to watch the same stuff?

LinuxMCE / Installation issues / Re: Should I change the workgroup name on LinuxMCE?

You should not change the workgroup. I am not sure, if it is hardcoded somewhere, but there is not need for it anyhow. If your other PCs are on the internal network of your core, the core will find them, no matter what the workgroup. (It is always funny, if a friend visits me with his notebook, he connects to my Wifi network, and all of a sudden, LinuxMCE asks me, if I want to use his shares) rgds Oliver

The location has changed, and the new location should have been updated in the wiki. http://svn.linuxmce.org/svn/Is the base for all branches. Go from there, to find the branch you want. If you find the wrong URL still on some pages in the wiki, could you please modify those pages to reflect the new current URL. Thank you rgds Oliver

What I'm really asking right now though is is: Will LinuxMCE run ok with just one network card and play AVI files i send to it from the Mac?
To answer the question in the title first: In my humble opinion, LinuxMCE is overkill for you, and might bring you more grief, than worth. Try a pure media center like XBMC rgds Oliver

What recommendations for a remote control? [..]Actually I've just remembered I've got a couple of old ipaqs in the garage! would they be better?
If you iPAQ's are old enough, and are directly supported, I would prefer those orbiters over a regular IR or BT remote any day. rgds Oliver
