Exactly my feelings as well. From my point of view, it might make more sense to "fix" the Z-Wave implementation to support the currently available controllers. The pricing for the components is not that far off, and you have way more choice. At the end of the day you have to have devices to use, and what I have seen on the PLC related sites do not look so promising.

As noted previously, run CAT5/6 everywhere. Everywhere is, each place where you need a light, each place where you have any kind of electrical outlet, each window and door. Run 2-4 CAT5 cables to every place where you think you already know you need 1. If feasible run an HDMI cable from your central wiring closet to the your intended TV place.

Did I mention to make sure to run enough cables

Yes, cables do cost money, but in the end of the day, putting the cables in now, will save you a lot and will later on greatly enhance the SWMBO / WAF factor.

It depends on your wants and needs. It sure is more expensive than things like X-10. I recently priced EIB just for kicks.

Starting with the needed stuff is about 300EUR, plus around 100-150EUR per device you want to control.

Users / Alarm Clock

Good day,

to get to know events better, I would like to setup LMCE as my alarm clock. LMCE should play a specific media file at a special time each day.

Anyone has a detailed step by step instruction? I know, i have to setup an event for this, but I can't get the hang of the additional parameters to play a file onto a MD.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

after posting I was looking again to find some kind of information backing up my claim. Could not find any :-( I might have mistaken merten and moeller.

However, using a proprietary RF technology instead of a proven available one is kind of stupid in my book.

I think, XComfort is a Z-Wave implementation by Moeller. At least, it has all of the characteristics of Z-Wave.

Thanks, I know and use screen. The thing I am looking for as sort of like RDP on Windows Terminal Servers, where you detach your session, go home, and reconnect.

IIRC only NX does this on Linux, but I am not sure, hence my question.

In short: There might be a way .

My current way of thinking is this:

• Use the DHCP server on a dedicated network.
• Create your MD.
• Have a look at the create information in the /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf file for your new MD.
• Move these information over to your main DHCP server.
• Disable the firewall on the core.
• Disable the DHCP server on the core.
• Reconnect the core to your main LAN
• See what happens if you turn your MD on your main network on.

Tell us your results.

Installation issues / Re: Orbiter on N800 (OS2008)

I just updated my N800 to OS2008 and installed the latest orbiter.

If you go directly to https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=162 and download the linuxmce deb it will tell you all the needed dependencies. Most of the dependencies can be downloaded directly from the garage page. Make sure, to download the mysql-common before the libmysqlclient.

If you have downloaded the dependencies of the garage page and retried the linuxmce deb off the garage page and you still have missing dependencies (as being told by the detail page of the programm manager), search for these dependencies in either the Maemo or the Maemo extra repositories. I had problems accessing the Maemo repositories direct, so I used the url http://stage.maemo.org and http://stage.maemo.org/extras

Also, right now there does not seem to be a deb Package for the Microsoft Truetype Fonts available for the N800. You have to copy the /usr/share/fonts/msttcorefonts directory contents over to your N800. The only way I was able to do this is by installing the openssh-server. BEWARE: Do not install openssh (containing client and server). It did not let me specify a password to be used for ssh. Manually removing the openssh-server and reinstalling the server alone did do the trick for me.

After the installation of the orbiter software on the N800 I tried starting it. It asked for the IP address of the DCERouter and the Device id of the created orbiter (see the Wiki on how to create the orbiter in the admin page of the DCERouter). However, connecting did not work, but hung the N800. What do you do, if a computer hangs? You turn it off. After restarting the N800 and re-executing the LinuxMCE Orbiter it took a while and started the orbiter. The orbiter is very good to read, and it is much faster than a weborbiter I tried before.

However, I have an (imported) audio library of about 15000 files. Choosing audio does take a while to start showing the list. Also, selecting one of the characters to jump to a specific performer, does NOT work on my installation.

As there is no progress displayed after selecting for example Audio, you sometimes double click. This can be especially bad, if you are selecting the Back button.

Another thing that does cause problems on my system is switching away from the orbiter to surf the net. Coming back shows a frozen screen (just white) and I have to kill the orbiter on the N800.

you might want to start with LinuxMCE, which will install a full blown Kubuntu system, and later add the LTSP modules.

OT-BTW: How do detach a session and continue that session on another thin client with LTSP? I could not find anything during my run with LTSP (v4.x)

[..]Internal Upscaling cards does it exist? because I've read about this specific hardware chips for DVDs but I cannot find any for PCI, but can it be performed by software and better with PC Video cards?, I'm afraid not.

During a recent HT enthusiasts meeting we compared a Lumagen Scaler to a PC running Dscaler5 (without ffmpeg specifics), and we could not find a noticable difference on a CRT beamer displaying onto a 2,20x1,50 screen.

I don't know at the moment, how good the scaling within xine is, but even if it might not be as good as the used windows solution, it will eventually be there.

You must be kidding.

Regarding the other things on your list: Do some homework and use the http://wiki.linuxmce.org. Search for hardware and you should get a long list of things for you to pick and choose.

Regarding fiire at the beginning of this discussion: You have two choices. Build your own and do the research, or go to fiire and get a mostly ready made solution. I don't like their MD cases, so I will build my own, based on the cases from http://www.hifiatx.com/hfx.php?lang=EN (Caution: Flash Alert). The hfx Classic looks mighty nice, IMHO.
