Thanks Hari.

The quality is good enough for me.

BTW: What version ipaq is that?

Hari,

that picture is very helpful. Do you mind if I put it in the Wiki?

Maybe other people would like to add pictures of their mobile orbiters as well, so people get a feeling for size and readability.

Hi Jason,

thanks will fix.
I've never submitted anything in Mantis and am new to this whole deal so I apologize if I stepped on any toes.

And that mantis was my first entry into the LinuxMCE mantis :)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Especially the use of the orbiter without the TV was a surprise for my visitor. It is very nice to just scroll thru DVDs and CDs to find what one wants to look and after deciding on it, start what ever is necessary with a single click. If I'd have to pick two things I like best about Pluto / LinuxMCE, it would be scrolling thru DVD/CD selection from remote, and Follow Me of the media.

Thanks Cirion.

Yesterday I had someone over and I gave him the N800. He really like the size and feel. However, he was a little bit concerned about the speed and the screen size.

How do you like the performance of the Windows Mobile based orbiter?

The ATI drivers are still not performing as well as nVidia's and cause no end of problems currently. We do not build any hardware products with ATI graphics because of this... its a shame as the underlying hardware is certainly more than upto the job... its the drivers.
It really is a shame. The card is in my home cinema PC regularly running Vista Ultimate. It was just a test to see how easy one can setup an additional MD. Apart from the initial problem with the sound, everything else was easy.

BTW: Do you see a difference in the quality of the ATI drivers between the 32bit and the 64bit version?

Quote
Currently I would suggest going to an nVidia based card - 6100 (onboard chip), 6150 (onboard chip), 6200 or 7300

Thanks for that info. I already defined the 6200 as a requirement for a new MD and a new Hybrid.

Anyone has a screen shot of the orbiters running on a Windows Mobile? Or is the orbiter identical to the N8x0 and the regular Windows orbiter?

Hello 1audio,

The benefit of the 64 bit OS shows in very demanding applications like H.264 HD. A place where you need every advantage.

Would you might sending links for any benchmarks and or tests outlining the difference between H.264 decoding running 32bit vs. 64bit? It is my understanding, that any kind of decoding would foremost benefit from multi-threading, and only places where huge amounts of memory (more memory, than 32bit can easily address) need to be worked with, a 64bit system has advantages.

maybe it's a wee bit overkill..but the gc100 works well :-P

:) This must be like starting a V8 to drive 300ft to the next p.o.

I will go with the PCIe route for everything I can foresee happening in the next 12 month. If I need more, I will go with the USB2Serial adapters.

As I am creating a new system, it really is not much of a point. Any of the E6xxx Core2Duo should be sufficient. But, if you have a current system and see problems, which you pinpoint to missing CPU power, 8-10% may be helpful for you. I'd be very interested to hear your findings, as soon as you get a chance to try it out.

All tests I have done so far do not show an increase in speed for most applications, but those tests are NOT LMCE related, which is my reason for being interested in real-life experience.

Hello Andrew,

Well yes it does... you probably see about a 8-10% performance improvement over 32bit on the same processor. This will improve over time as the 64bit code base improves and expands.

8-10% is not a small number, but never the less hardly noticeable by the average user, is it?

Any particular area where these speed improvements show in the MD? I am currently running 1080p on via ATI 2600XT to a NEC PG 6 (I know, there are better resolutions for the beamer), and I see heavy tearing. The tearing slightly improves if I change deinterlacing from best to something less CPU intensive. The CPU is something like a 4400 x2 AMD. Is this a problem of the ATI driver in general, or a problem with not enough CPU power?

Users / S/PDIF IN
« on: January 09, 2008, 03:15:20 pm »
Hello,

does S/PDIF in (or spdif in for the search engine ;))  work?

I will have a cable receiver that supports S/PDIF coax out. And the core will have an S/PDIF in. Now, I want to input the output of the receiver into the core and transfer the sound through out the system. The video will go into the PVR USB2, but I really would want to have the 5.1 sound also available.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Same here, but I don't know, what is so special about it. It has some geek factor (always good :-)), but does it help in any relevant way to display a smoother picture, better sound, or faster menu?

Weren't there some people reporting problems with assigning always the same address to the USB connected RS-232 devices?

On one side, I like the USB way of doing things, because it is cheaper and you can easily move them around. On the other hand, a PCIe seems to be the more stable solution?!
