Cool. My installation already had a USB-UIRT and the PVR2. Once everything is settled, I can use either to control IR equipment.

Thanks for the info.

Users / Re: Blu-Ray player problem
« on: February 11, 2008, 07:20:01 pm »
I actually didn't think I'd be able to use Blu-ray at all for a while.  The way this thread was heading I thought it might be possible to get the video transcoded to something reasonable sized for use in a library.  Hearing that it 0710 can play Blu-ray movies is great.  If I could rip a movie then let a transcode run for several hours I'd consider making taking the plunge.  I'm actually much more interested in the ability to transcode and store than using a MD as a DVD player.  Whether or not it can play without ripping first is far less important as I almost never do this anyway.  I buy movies, rip/transcode them, then play them via MythTV at some later date.  If there is no way to do this with linuxMCE/Blu-ray right now, no big deal.  I can wait until the functionality fits my needs.

Why do you want to transcode a blu ray? Any kind of transcoding (that saves space) will reduce picture quality. Isn't one of the reasons to buy Blu Ray or HD-DVD to have the best picture quality available? With disk space getting so cheap these days (about 24€ct a Gig), I don't see a need to sacrifice picture quality at all.

What I did to enable a none working NIC was, to modify /etc/initramfs-tools-interactor/modules and add the required module. Have a look at the wiki entrance. http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/ASUS_P5K. I still have to update the steps for the second boot, where it starts another initrd.img.

Installation issues / VDR and n800 - No control
« on: February 07, 2008, 08:39:28 pm »
Hello,

I am trying to utilize an Nokia n800 as a remote for LMCE. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work within the VDR part of LMCE. I see a remote, but NONE of the keys on the display of the n800 work. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Am I doing something wrong?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Just so it does not cause problems in the future.

DO NOT USE APTITUDE with the default settings. Use APT-GET instead, otherwise you will ruin your installation (as of 0710b3)

Sorry for shouting

Sorry, I'm just reloading my system, and didn't bother before hand to look. Only two ways of doing it, that I know off. No Swap space, or swap over NFS.

There might be more options, but I do not know.

Installation issues / Receiver via WinTV-PVR USB2 plus DVB-C
« on: February 04, 2008, 09:21:34 pm »
Good day,

anyone wants to shed some light on this: I want to utilize the WinTV USB2 box to feed my external receiver into the LinuxMCE box. Is this done via the TV part of LinuxMCE, i.e. MythTV or VDR, or using a different programm?

Second, I want to use a DVB-T supported by VDR concurrently with the above.

Is this going to cause a problem? I am in the middle of reloading Beta3 and can't access the cable network right now to test, so any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Oliver

  1) Using different MD hardware configurations like "video cards" and "audio cards, will this be a problem for the MD's at boot time (boot from LAN card) for loading the proper video and audio drivers on each device.

Each media director is setup on its own. Meaning, you can configure each and every setting differently for all your MDs. In my test bed, I had an old Fujitsu Siemens Table PC, some old Compaq EVO n400 all working as MDs.

3)  I assume a network laser printer is also supported on the DHCP LAN, does anyone have any network scanning ideas/info?
I am not sure I understand what the  network printer has to do with an LMCE installation, but basically each MD runs CUPS if I remember right, so they will be able to access whatever network printer is available.

4)  As the MD's are essentially a basic computing device, can "open office" run on the MD's as well for desktop computing?  I also assume mozilla or kbrowser will work as well.
yes, you have a full KDE desktop at your command.

The login always just flashes by. And yes, it might well be a problem with the video driver.

After the login, it should switch to a graphical view of things. There seems to be a problem there. Try attaching a regular computer display to the VGA out (if you have one), and see if that helps.

It seems, aptitude is something to be avoided right now. Doing an aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade deinstalls a number of packages and downgrades msttcore-fonts.

I had tried UI2 before, and found the problem with not being able to use the arrow keys to seleect anything. That's why I went with UI1, because it had better usability IMHO. I will need to reinstall the n800 mobile orbiter to see if that is usable.

Thanks
