Users / Re: audio on every available device possible?

Another option that you might want to look into is the use of soft squeeze for the second output. That way you can have a dedicated output zone for audio only. Search the wiki on softsqueeze

jondecker,

[..] quickdesigner isn't quite finished enough to use yet from what I've tried of it.

what kind of shortcomings does QuickDesigner have for you? I like it so far (only been using it for a couple of month). I especially like the copy functionality.

Users / Re: VDR: how are you handeling timers on the MD's ?
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:48:29 am »
At the moment (0710), the recording would happen on the MD using the softdevice connected via the network to the core. There is currently no provision to use RemoteTimer to schedule the recording on the core.

For me, this is no big deal, as I already do ALL of my recordings using vdr-admin

btw: If you always want your Windows servers on the internal network to have the same IP address, add them as File Server devices with MAC address and IP address to the database (they should have been detected already anyhow). That way, a static lease is put into the dhcpd.conf file.

DHCP clients don't request specific IP addresses.

Well, it depends. If it has received an IP address, it will ask for a renewal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Host_Configuration_Protocol#DHCP_discovery

I'd recommend to start enhancing Text to speech plugin by option of using better Festival voices, then some sort of data storage and then rework speech announcements... I think that idea is right, users would love to have system talking about events in the house and other gathered data - but currently this feature is pretty limited...

bulek,

please put a working patch into trac. We will be glad to incorporate it into 0810 ;)

Colinjones,

on the DHCP issue. There are some Windows versions, which will ask the DHCP server for a new IP address each time (Win2k is known for that). Also, if you reinstall lmce and another PC has received the IP address before the original PC connected to the network, the original PC will get a new address.

Read about debian repository mirror and change the install script to point to your repo location (and/or manually point the DNS entry to your local repo)

Colinjones,

looks nice, especially with the text.

A small note however:
Most Home automation equipment is connected to the core via RS-232 or USB  and not via Ethernet to the switch.
Printers are mostly connected to the MDs or the Core, only lately do the network connected printers appear in regular households.

Also, you might want to look at the following diagram, we used during LinuxTag 2008. http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Image:Diagram1.jpg

PeteK,

try executing Start_LocalDevices.sh in /usr/pluto/bin

That's what I do after a restart

Instead you should be glad that people are interested comming to this forum. I did not think it was an exclusive club!

The forum is not an exclusive club at all. It is filled with lots of people with different interests. And we have seen quite a few people come in here, that want to just install it and make a quick buck. We got cautious over time. And everyone who has used lmce for a while knows, there are lots of pitfalls. Is it a black art? No. Does it help to invest time? Yes. And if I were to base a business around lmce, I would go, and get me an expert, that has indepth knowledge of the system, and can help me get to good start, instead of me spending endless weeks and month, and still not being able to grasp what it is all about. lmce is different from anything else out there. From the feature perspective, from the user perspective, and most of all, from the development perspective.

That was uncalled for. And, as a side note, I am sure, my wife would object ;)

Users / Re: 2 MDs in one room
« on: February 23, 2009, 07:44:34 pm »
I am using EAs to have an MD (or other AV device) serve more than a single room.

could you please describe your setup a bit....
[..]

Two rooms. One room contains the core with a set top box. Set top box has a long cable into the second room.
USB-UIRT is on core to control the set top box
Set top box setup EA to be manually controlled
Selected both room EAs in the device setup of the set top box
Now I have a scenario in both rooms to control the box.
The set top box is connected to a plasma in the second room.
The Plasma device is also in both EAs
The Plasma device is controlled via RS-232 by the MD in the second room.

I can now virtually go into the core room, and select the set top box, and the Plasma gets turned on. Same the other way round, i.e. I can go into the MD room and select set top box and everything is turned on.

One thing missing atm is the remote control of the set top box. It does not show on the orbiter when I am in room MD, I have to change rooms to room Core.
