The squeezebox receivers are only 150 and are integrated into lmce already.

The SqueezeBox receivers do not yet work PnP. They can be made to work though. The regular SqueezeBoxes, are plug and play.

It's all about WAF.

My wife is very IT (but not Linux) literate[..]Until I have established exactly how stable MCE is, I daren't risk her internet link  ;)

I can fully understand your motivation  :D

Users / Re: iPhone/iPod Touch Orbiter?
« on: April 25, 2009, 10:35:07 am »
Why don;t we develop an Orbiter for most of the MID can use? So that users from Iphone, Winmobile, WinCE, and ArmLinux can use it. Just a suggestion.... ;)

Well, there is a simple reason.

We have, up to now, about 112000 times people tried to install LinuxMCE (or its predecessor PlutoHome). But right now, we only have a handful (and I mean that literally) of people doing development work. We have tons of people coming up with suggestions. Mind you, I do not have a problem with people suggesting stuff, infact, I have done so myself on a couple of occasions.

Our problem is, we do need more people doing development work. And if you would have taken a look at the current iOrbiter proof of concept, you would have realized, how little that thing has to do with the iPhone or iPod Touch, and further more, how little it has to do with being able to program. The iOrbiter was created without a lot of programming expertise, no compilation is involved, and the result can be used by anyone with a fairly recent browser on their device.

Even if the name suggests otherwise, the iOrbiter PoC is more about having a new web based Orbiter, that is snappier than any other Orbiter we currently have, than about anything else.

Installation issues / Re: LinuxMCE as DHCP server, NOT gateway!
« on: April 24, 2009, 09:42:55 pm »
[..]If you are moving about from room to room with your orbiter (bluetooth / wi-fi device, cell) then dhcp is how lmce tracks what's where, to control what. e.g. If you wander about from room to room and use an orbiter to change the tv channel, you want it changing the channel in the room that you are currently in, not the room that you were just in.

This is not correct. DHCP has nothing to do with tracking the movement of the user. The movement of the user is detected, either by using the follow me functionality of the fiire chiefs, or by utilizing Bluetooth (with the mobile orbiter on the Bluetooth device iirc)

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Community manager?
« on: April 24, 2009, 03:59:47 pm »
We have a community manager. He is currently on extended private leave.

During his absence, some of the core devs are taken care of the day to day business.

Regarding the lack of update on the homepage. Yes, there is not much news. Unfortunately, we have not much to say. We will post news, when there is a beta and/or another major step forward towards the next release of LinuxMCE

Best regards

Peer Oliver Schmidt
Release Manager for
LinuxMCE 0810

I don't want to be accused of pointing out the obvious, but any developer needs to have access to both ;) As other have said, WiFi for data and Btuetooth for follow-me (if present).

I did the iOrbiter proof-of-concept without any of them. But I would, if you'd send an iPhone and an iPod Touch so I can verify, that my iOrbiter is working on both. PM if you need my german postal address.

The device template #1759 needs to be changed to allow the addition of a password, and the simplephone app has to be changed accordingly.

Assuming it is legal, can anyone point me at some helpfiles on how to do it / where to obtain the necessary equipment? I've searched the wiki but not turned anything up :(

As I pointed out before in this thread or another, if you are using the VDR as your PVR, check the VDR wiki (http://vdr-wiki.de). Most stuff is in German, but some is already translated into English (and other pages might have success with Google Translate)

Developers / Re: Discussion on true Multi-room Solution (continued)
« on: April 22, 2009, 11:27:14 pm »
I will admit right away this is way over my head as for coding and I did do countless nights of research on this but never did find anything on multi-room within these forums or in the wiki.

But I still am able to create ideas and hopefully help get this on track.

Does anyone think the flash memory cards idea will work?

no

i am unable to bring the menu back up or stop the media. Posde were u able to overcome these issues with yours? thanks

No idea. It has been over a year, and I used it on a test system only. For me, using a remote is way to cumbersome :) - No 10' UI here

I've used the ATI RF a looong time ago. But I am now exclusively using Orbiters, like Cisco 7970, Nokia n810 and WebDT 366

The iOrbiter was built under 0710. I never tested it on the real device, but used midori for testing it.
