Sorry I don't think that's right.. That's in direct contradiction of what I was told when I contacted them and also what is on their page here: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5549

Purchases under $1000 (apart from tobacco and liquor) do not attract GST or taxes,   Every purchase over $1000 will attract Customs Duty and GST on the amount calculated after the freight charge.  Even if the customs duty is 0% (which I doubt but I can't find anything specific about the 0% or 5% you mentioned in relation to Computer Parts) and If we pay $100 more then we have to (for the GST component), we're back where we started so we may as well do another separate purchase ;)

EDIT: Not to mention that we have to fill out a formal customs declaration, which is just plain annoying ;)

I'm easy - I'll go with that. I wasn't too fussed about the extra GST, becuause it means me paying an additional AUD25, as opposed to around US150 for freight if I ordered directly from Fiire.

If we do organise another group buy it must be sent to someone elses address - the page you referred to mentions something about that.

So - looks like we are pretty close! Great stuff.

Best Regards,
Richard.

The nice features of zwave and insteon are that the protocols are advanced enough to 'sniff' out all the devices, and add them to lmce accordingly.  That's what I've tried to do with the Insteon driver.. and from what I've read, thats also what the ZWave driver did.

Regards,

Dan

Yep... thats exactly what the current  z-wave driver does

Are you using Z-Wave? I thought it was 110volt only! I'd love something like Z-Wave for 220v/50Hz. Any suggestions?

Richard.

I've been playing around with LMCE 0710 Beta2, and have been thoughroughly impressed. Lots of problems, but very enjoyable and very impressive potential.

One problem - I can't make my lights follow my remote movement  :o

Pity I discovered LMCE only after I sold my house fully automated with CBus  :(

Anyway, I want to automate my current house and connect the automation to LMCE - and I'm not afraid of the development work necessary to get there. Are there any other brave souls that want to journey down this road with me?

First step is to select a an automation system that can be retrofitted. CBus is not a good choice - I don't want to pull cladding off the wall to install the control cables, and Wireless CBus is quite a bit more expensive.

PLCBus? Sounds interesting - does anyone have any experience with it?

X10 - it has some bad press regarding reliability, and I want my system to be robust. I want my automated house to just work - I don't want to have to reboot my computer each time my fridge motor induces a pulse down the powerline.

Oh yeah - I also want my automation system to be independent - I want it to be controllable from a computer system like LMCE, but I don't wan't it to be dependant on a computer. Turn off all the computers in the house and lights must still be controllable from the wall switches and/or IR remotes or whatever - which implies decentralised intelligence like CBus (and PLCBus, from what I've heard)

Best Regards,
Richard.

Ok so 3 of us good to go!
RichardP: there's still provision for you to get 2 extra dongles if you like, so just waiting on Darren..

Great - I'd like to do that if I can. However, maybe we can all get everything. I've just been digging around the Customs webite (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4273) and have just gotten off the phone with customs. Computer parts are 0% duty. Entertainment is 5%. So - if we successfully argue that the remotes are computer parts (and TV's can't have USB dongles plugged into them) then we don't pay any duty, even if it is over $1000. If we get some young Customs Inspector out to prove himself, and he says these are TV remotes, at worst we pay 5% duty.

The other thing is GST. Putting 5 remotes into a single package is going to result in the package being inspected no matter what we do. That means we will have to pay the GST even if the package is less than $1000.

I figure we ask Fiire (or Polywell) to ensure the invoice says "For use on Intel Computers" or some such, and just go for it.

What do you think?

Best Regards,
Richard.

So I tried again manually editing the xorg.conf file and making the changes above that I didn't do the first time.... rebooted..  system started rebuilding again.... screen came up and was viewable again..  however I still had the small unused line at the bottom of my screen..  so I logged back in and looked at my xorg.conf file...  somehow everything reverted back to 1280x720...  and now I'm having video tearing during playback that I didn't have to start with....  so I think I should have left everything alone....  now I need to go back in and fix everything...

So this problem isn't really "SOLVED" as it says in the topice title ;). I hope to see the solution when one is found.

I doubt you will be able to solve the problem without a change of hardware. My card is an NVidia 7300 GT. If I look in /var/log/xorg.0.log, it lists all the resolutions that it is capable of, and for my card, 1366x768 is not among them. However, I'm connected to a standard TV using SVideo, and although I don't think that it is, it may be restricting that resolution because my SVideo can't support it. I'd really like to see the log file of others, to see what the different NVidia cards are cabable of. If it's not too much trouble, can you guys PM me your log files?

Best Regards,
Richard.

What card do you have. I'm going to be changing displays as soon as I can, so I'm interested in this, as it didn't work for me. Would you be able to PM me your xorg logfile. It is in /var/logs/xorg.0.log, most likely.

I know I have to change the xorg.conf "vesa" setting to "nvidia" but it keeps getting overwritten. I saw a post to put exit in a script somewhere just havent had the time to check.

If you are expert at xorg.conf's

I get some problem ones together for you to look at.

VIA - PC2500
1360x768 or 1366X768 resolution. HDMI connector.

thanks for the help.

Not really and expert - it just that I have just gone through the same process and faced the same problems with my Nvidia card.

For the Nvidia card, the HDMI connector would be:
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
Option "TVStandard" "HD720p"

HD720p is a progressive scanline format, so make sure your TV supports progressive before you use it.

As for your Nvidia getting changed to Vesa - that seems like the Nvidia driver may not be installed correctly and the X display system can't get it to load correctly. Have a look at /var/logs and see if you have a Xorg.0.log that you can read to see what is happening.

Best Regards,
Richard.

Thanks again...the fix worked.  My only issuse now is the default resolution.  I have my LMCE box connected DVI/HDMI to my tv which has a native resolution of 1366x768.  When I run through the AV Wizard, I don't have the option to select this resolution, so when I have MCE up and running, I have to scroll to the left/right to see the entire screen.  Any idea?

Thanks Again

Have a look at the xorg log file - /var/log/xorg.0.log - and read through it. It contains a lot of information about what is happening as the X video subsystem starts up. This includes what it thinks your monitor capable of and what the card is capable of. You will be able to see if the video mode really is unsupported, or whether it is not being offered because the system thinks your monitor is not capable of it.

I found a similar problem after installation, which arose because the system assumed my TV was NTSC. Putting in Option "TVStandard" "Pal" solved that problem easily, but it was only the logs which told me where the problem lay.

Best Regards,
Richard.

The 7050 chipset seems to work better with the default 0710 drivers.

I tried the envy update on 0710 and I am having problems stuck vesa mode right now.

Can you post your xorg.conf and I'll see if I can see anything that jumps out at me?

Thanks...I'll give that a shot.  I loaded the beta 710 thinking that would solve my problem, but it's still the same.  I noticed that in 710 beta, there are three xorg.conf files, two with .pluto appended to them.  The file setup looks about the same with a couple of extra option and some missing info from the 704 file.  Any luck with the beta?

I've never edited anything but /etc/X11/xorg.conf - I think LMCE changes the others when it sees something different in your configuration on startup. Maybe someone with more knowledge could fill us in.

This is the exact problem i've been trying to fix for 2 weeks now (just found this forum).  My only question is, before or after i edit this file, will i need install any additional nvidia drivers?

Thanks
MG

I'm afraid the answer is not going to help you in the slightest  :D

It would depend on what driver you currently have, and whether they have any bugs in the sections that relate to your card. The short answer - try just the edit, and if that solves your problem, fine. If you are capable of getting the latest drivers and installing them, you probably want to do it. Nvidia is generally good with their drivers and my personal preference is to have the latest non-beta driver always

Ahhh, but are you cheating Andrew? Are those 3 channels all mux'd on the same channel or are they genuinely different channels with different tuners? :) i know you have said before that the UK uses a lot of muxing ;)

Does it make a difference? Will recording 2 channels all on the same mux place less strain on the system than recording 2 channels from 2 seperate cards? And while I'm asking the question, will 2 seperate cards place a different load on the system than a single card with dual tuners?

That card (and Asus's web site hides lots) uses the 7050 chipset. That chipset only works with the newer driver. You need to either update your driver or wait until 710 is ready enough for you. Updating the driver isn't real easy. . .

If the chipset is indeed the 7 series, then you are probably having the same issues I had. You will need to edit the xorg.conf file. See my posts in the forum on the 0710 Beta 2, and also at http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=3500.15

Feel free to ask questions if you need to.

Would you report that bug in Mantis? The installer should detect whether the mixer exists, and install one if it doesn't. And why the AppServer is dependent on a sound mixer is a mystery to me.

I'm going through the process of getting the source code to have a look at it, but I doubt it is dependant on it. More likely it is setting the sound volume or something like that, and not checking beforehand whether it exists. Bad things happen in code when you do something to a non-existant object.  :o

Turned out that Appserver needs a sound mixer device to work with, and my soundcard (Audigy Value) does not have one. Installation of a software mixer had my system up and running smoothly. Still don't have sound working (I had sound before installing the software mixer)

Will Do.
