I've just done a second install, and am still having problems. On the first install, I chose Myth when asked to choose between Myth and VDR.

On the first install, I had a full-screen menu, very different from the one I had under 0704. I had a Climate button, with no menu entries inside it. Here Device #15, Appserver, would not start up. As a result, I could not get MythTV working. At least, I think it is as a result - the reason I'm thinking Myth depends on Appserver is because I found something in the 0704 changelog which said something to that effect.

On the second install, where I chose VDR, I have a menu very similar to 0704. No Climate menu. Video and Audio work, but not TV. Appserver and Myth does not start up, and this time, neither does device number #73 (I can't remember what it is). However, I can watch TV under both Myth and Kaffeine under the KDE desktop. When I try under LMCE, all I get is black screen.

I'll go and post in Mantis, then I'll start looking at logs to see what I can find.

I've installed both 0704 and 0710Beta2, and I've not been able to get Myth working under LMCE. In both cases, it seems to be that Appserver does not start up.

I'm using Gigabyte Motherboard with Intel processor, NVidia 7300GT, Creative Audigy Value and Leadtek Winfast DTV1000T.

I can get Myth working under KDE, but not under LMCE, where I just get a black screen and eventually get told Myth is having a problem and do I want to reset the backend. It seems that all the hardware works - the problem is that Appserver (device #15) does not start up. When LMCE is starting, the log shows a timeout waiting for Appserver to be registered, and eventually I get a black screen saying not all devices started up.

I'd like to get to the bottom of this - any ideas where I can find some relevant logs to point me in the right direction? The Wiki is very sparse on info for Appserver.

Best Regards,
Richard.

Did you by any chance disable asterisk and/or text-to-speech?

No, I didn't. Should I have done? I did a standard install, straight off the DVD.

Hi Richard,

Can you post a Mantis about this problem in the 0710 Beta here please; http://mantis.linuxmce.org/

Thanks

Will do, Andrew. I'm currently doing a fresh install, putting into action everything I've learned over the last few days. When I'm done, I'll be able to post the issue in Mantis more clearly, and without any of the misleading information that comes from thinking something is happening without clear evidence

Best Regards,
Richard

Installation issues / Re: Video disappears after booting, no UI displayed
« on: December 31, 2007, 07:58:37 am »
Hi,

I managed to install LinuxMCE via the 2CD package. I first had the problem that it didn't select the right driver for my video card (installed over plain ubuntu 7.04), so I installed it manually via the ATI packages and prevented changes to the file by usign chattr (the system kept revoking my changes, vesa doesn't really make sense).

Now when I boot, I can see the Video with the instructions for 2 seconds, then it disappears. I can still hear the sound ("When you can see and hear me, use the arrow buttons"), but there is only a mouse cursor on the screen, nothing else.

I had a similar problem. I'm using an NVidia card connected to a standard TV via SVideo. I had to change Option "TVStandard" from "CRT" to "TV" in xorg.conf.

Hi all,

Daniel provided a beta2 image yesterday. Installation went fine for me.

http://vt100.at/kubuntu-linuxmce-0710-i386-beta-2.iso.torrent

Don't bother downloading older versions (beta1 or amd64), they have some issues and probably won't work for you.

best regards,
Hari

You should choose vdr if you plan to use it as your chosen PVR application ;-)

Thanks, Andrew. I'll do another install and see what happens.

Can anyone who has installed the iso downloaded from the current torrent confirm if they have the 'Climate' menu and also whether they see some VDR test scripts in the 'Computing Applications' screen?

Thanks Andrew

I have a Climate menu. I don't think there is anything in it (though I'm not sure. I'll post another reply after I check again). I don't recall seeing any VDR test scripts, but at some time during the installation, I had a choice between Myth and VDR and I chose Myth. Should I have chosen VDR?

Yes, the frontend GUI is tied into KDE, but for running a dedicated server, with the display nodes elsewhere, surley all it needs to do is network access, drive storage, and provide a HTTP config webserver.

Actually, I just had a thought - your problem is not just getting it running, but also keeping it running. Say you did get it running under Suse, CentOS or whatever. The next time LinuxMCE goes to get updates, it will try to update both LinuxMCE and a non-existant Kubuntu installation. The update process might wreak havoc on the running system. So besides just changing the scripts to get it running under the new system, you're either going to have to keep updates off, or perform the updates manually, which would quickly become something that becomes extrememly time-consuming and frustrating.

iirc the appserver segfaults when using amixer without a sound card. Do you have a sound card?

I do. At first I've tried to use the onboard sound on the motherboard. I'm away from the computer at the momemnt, and I can't remember what type it is. After that I bought an Audigy Value, put that in and disabled onboard sound. The change to the Audigy was not a response to the problem - it was simply to have a soundcard which gave me digital sound that I could put into my Dolby surround system.

Playing further over the last few days, I've found that MythTV won't work inside LinuxMCE, although it works under the Kubuntu desktop. I'm assuming that this is due to appserver not running.

Thanks for the reply Hari. I'll check the iirc channels (have to learn how to do that first). Although I don't think Appserver is segfaulting, the info might give me some other insight into what it's doing or expecting. Everything helps.

Installation issues / AppServer does not start
« on: December 24, 2007, 06:57:02 am »
I'm trying to install 704, as a first-timer trying to familiarise myself with LinuxMCE before 710 is released.

I keep having a problem with AppServer not starting up, and a black screen saying not all devices have successfully started up (not the exact wording).

I've installed several times, each time doing a fresh install with different installation options - with/without DCHP server, with/without different hardware, always with the same error.

So, what does device #15, AppServer do, and what can affect it during startup? Any ideas?

I think a pretty strong clue to this is the fact that LMCE won't run out of the box under 7.10. If it's not a trivial task to change from 7.04 to 7.10, then it will be even more of a task to run under Suse.
