If you are going to need hd tuners, I recommend the hdhomerun. Uses less power, has no firmware to worry about, uses no pci slots and can be located anywhere due to the ethernet connectivity. Dual tuner is nice as well.

switch around the processor in the core and the MD.. you don't need the heavy lifting as much in the core as you will in the MD if it is going to be doing HD especially MKV and h.264 decoding. Also 4gb of ram is probably overkill for the core if I'm reading that right

unraid box is overboard
CPU  -   AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core - Why?

not needed.. unraid doesn't use dual core as I recall. You could use a cheap socket 754 for that and be just fine. Get a turion 64 low wattage processor off ebay and you are golden. No way will it be stressed enough to need that kind of hardware for just a file server even if you are hammering it (unless you plan to use iSCSI then you will need that due to it's heavy processor usage but I don't think unraid supports that). If you go the 754 route, this board works great http://www.epox.com.tw/eng/products_content.php?ps=375
but I don't see it easily available.

What's the total cost of that unraid server going to be that you have planned because here is the one I would build and cost breakdown:
Socket 754 mobo + video card - $27 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186067
Turion 64 1.8 ghz ml-32 - $20 or less off ebay
Ram - 1gb of hp ram - $7 after rebate http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=110805&t=703384
600 watt power supply - $22.50 after rebate - http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=110805&t=711333
case - whatever you want here
Due to the mobo not having gigabit - you can either add a gigabit pci card ($8 to 15) or a pci-e gigabit card for $22
Total Cost: $90 + case

Invest the extra money into Hard drives - preferably 750GB drives as they are the best price point right now. Here are some for $159.99 a piece with 5 year warranty. I have some myself and they work very well. This is the lowest price I've ever seen on 750GB seagates http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=110805&t=715973

It may be a better idea to find a better 754 motherboard with sata 2 and gigabit built in.
The MSI K8N Neo3 H nForce4 has gigabit built in, but sata 1.. shouldn't matter though it will still max out your drive transfers no problem and is available for cheap on ebay. it looks like it is a supported mobo for turion 64 from this page: http://angelfall.s39.xrea.com/area2ch/turion-e.html

well I do.. the intensity pro not hardware based though.. it needs a linux driver, but it could be functional if you had a fast enough processor and some storage for it

I was getting ready to purchase an alarm panel and was wondering exactly what models are fully plug-n-play as well. I really like the Caddx NX-8E but the wiki entry is incomplete.. just wondering if it is fully supported.

one note about saving power.. I'd also look at using the hdhomerun devices instead of HD capture cards. The power usage is lower and it frees up the pci slots.. not to mention the joy of not having to mess with firmware updates/os upgrade issues

Supposedly that intel 2180 uses less power than the be amd series chips or close to it. I've got a 2180 and with just the mobo and an efficient power supply greater than 85% effiency my power usage was 39 watts. Once you add in pci cards it jumps by about 8 watts per card. Under heavy load the power usage jumps about 15 watts give or take

I use an e2140 but also have a e2180 I have used in it with no problems. I havn't set this server up with linuxmce yet, but it functions fine with kubuntu 7.10/Fedora 8, and mythtv/asterix/transcoders/web so I see no issues with linuxmce with it
my specs for it are on the myth user page here:

Cheap or 100% effective w/ rf
pick one.

home automation isn't a cheap endeavor.  Insteon is one of the best types of new home automation tech and it's price reflects it, similarly X10 is not  the best way to automate and sometimes has commuication problems/misses and delays. Since x10 is so cheap, you can buy a few of the modules and see how it works for you. and insteon is compatible with the older x10 tech.

along the same lines of the be2x00 series is the intel e2180.. power usage is extremely low

just get an R5000-hd mod done to either an hd satellite receiver or a DCP-501 if you have cable. You'd need a lower power windows box as an intermidiary but it's still the best way

« on: January 08, 2008, 06:15:52 am »
ooh goody finally a topic I'm an expert in..
for $2000 you can get massive amounts of storage.
I personally think it is wasteful to use an entire computer just as a fileserver. There is not much resource usage on one, as you are pretty much limited by the drives. I have a combined system using software raid. Currently there are 12 Sata drives in it, and one ide 2.5" laptop system drive. Total storage ~5.5TB
Also with the newest 2.6.24 kernel that will be out in the next month, sata port multipliers will be supported by default. Buy two sata sil3132 pci-e 2 channel sata 2 cards and you have 20 drive software raid (i'm already doing it but it takes a custome compiled kernel)

The sweet spot right now is the 750GB drives. For $143 a piece I bought some brand new western digital 750gb drives with 3 year warranty.
so cost breakdown of a kick arse file server or combo box

Case - Coolmaster Stacker - up to 20 drives in the front using 5in3 sata backplanes $90 @- http://www.directron.com/stct01ww1.html

5in3 sata backplanes - go for about $100 - here is a comprehensive listing http://wiki.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=SATA_Hard_Disk_Stackers

Power supply - something over 600 watts with active PFC to have high effiency. I'm using a 750 Toughpower

Mobo and cpu- amd or intel.. anything with low power usage and high reliability. Also the more pci and pci-e slots the better. Try getting one with built in firewire as well. I really like the intel E2180 chip as it uses very little power (12-18 watts in idle) it also overclocks to 3.5ghz easily on air if you need it to.

Ram - 2gb of cheap ram is fine. There is always a deal going on with HP ram for $7 per GB after rebate pc 800 chips

So pricelist so far
5x750gb drives in a software raid 5 - less than $750 also there are 4 internal ide spts in the included 4in3 in the stacker case, so you can buy a few more and include those in the raid5. If you use more than 5 disks in a raid5, I'd recommend having one set up as a hotbackup in case one fails.
stacker case $100
5in3 sata backplane - $100
power supply - $100
motherboard - we'll say  $100
processor - again we'll say $100
ram - $20 after rebate
high quality power supply (do not skimp!) - $100
for 5 sata drives you can probably use on board without extra pci-e add on cards  so free there
System drive - $50

total cost = less than $1420

As for a comparison of Samba vs NFS vs iSCSI
Samba transfer speeds over gigabit ethernet - Raid 0 - 7200 rpm sata 2 32MB cache drives - write - 85MB/s  - read - 98MB/s - gigabit maximum is 125MB/s - I have dual bonded gigabit - adding a 2nd computer using the servers bonded ethernet - total write - 110 MB sustained writes, Reads- 138MB/s
iSCSI - write - 50MB/s with a much higher top processor/memory usage - Read - 70MB/S - iSCSI isn't a good standard. It's a resource hog - couldn't push it anyhigher using bonded gigabit
NFS - about the same as samba, but I get a lot of IObound errors when using it with myth. Gave up on nfs as samba is more universal.

sure let me find the details. I was interested last year in starting up a neighborhood television/internet provider like a guy did up in canada
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2004/pulpit_20040930_000460.html

and where you can get sat service and be your own provider

do that along with using a perm wireless setup for your neighborhood:

in response to that, there are satellite companies that allow you to reuse/transmit/whatever their feeds
