Just FYI, using "adept" might break your system.

True, but I figured since it's just a diskless MD, if it broke something it wouldn't be too much trouble to rebuild.

rrambo - I haven't seen it in the usual place since 0704, assumed it was removed. Actually I seem to remember getting into KDE desktop before the setup wizard had run and seeing it still there, but gone afterwards. Have reinstalled many times 0710, never seen it after the setup wizard...

On 0710 Beta 2 and Beta 3 dvd quick installs, I do not see adept-installer.  Maybe it's available on the CD installs?

Don't want to update the wiki article until I understand 1) if this is the real reason why (although I did try the original process twice with reboots between, to no avail, and as soon as I did this it worked) and 2) if this is the best procedure to recommend....

That makes a lot of sense to me.  Rip a file then look at it's ownership, it'll be root:public.  It looks like the MD is running as root (a really bad idea, IMO).  When you go to the KDE desktop and open a konsole, you can see that you are running as linuxmce.

BTW, here's the kubunto instructions for installing flash on 64-bit firefox:

Have fun,
Roy

Are you all looking for adept on the core/hybrid or on a diskless MD??  Because on 7.04, 7.10b2 and 7.10b3 I have had adept on my MD's..  My core was installed by DVD method.

As a matter of fact, it's been on every MD since 7.04 and now both betas of 7.10.

But adept isn't installed (or visible) on KDE once LMCE is installed.... where did you find it? Command line?

Weird..  it was installed on my MD..  under K (Start Button), then up to Add/Remove Programs. Just like in a normal Kubuntu install.

all I did to get flash to work in firefox was to add/remove programs from within kde (adept_installer) and search for 'restricted' then installed the Ubuntu and Kubuntu Restricted extras.  Hope this helps..  my MD is 64-bit.

It's good to see an attempt at reorganizing some of this info in a more logical and easier to search format.  I've been researching this package for months trying to figure out how to get everything properly set up before I began, and some info is almost impossible to find a clear answer on.  The wiki has become a mess, and posting a question on the forums... well you're more likely to be attacked than get any help.  It does no good to search when all you find is thread after thread of people being too full of themselves, yet not a single answer to the issue you're searching for.  There's no point in building a community full of bad neighbors.

The only attacks on here are when someone posts a question that has been asked previously and answered to exhaustion.  If you don't bother searching first and ask one of these questions, yes you are more than likely going to be met with hostility.  I agree, the wiki needs to be worked on.  Have YOU contributed to improving the wiki?  I have..  I would have to say that 100% of the people on here have normal lives and jobs so it's a bit of a task to update all aspects of the wiki when people only have to time to work on this in their spare time.  Don't complain if you don't have anything useful to contribute yourself.

The developers are extremely helpful when asked a question that needs to be answered and hasn't been asked a million times before.  I don't consider any of them to be 'bad neighbors'

Here's the thing...  The DVD install is not a typical OS install..  that is not what is was made for...  If you're going to go through the process of downloading media, burning it, and doing an install, have enough sense to read the instructions..  if you don't, and you lose your precious data, don't come whining here because you were too lazy to take another few minutes to read some simple instructions..  I don't have any sympathy for the whiners and even if a message has been added for the new 7.10 when it is released, there will still be someone who won't read the instructions and will go ahead and choose Yes to install and wipe their drive and then they'll post on this forum that they lost their data due to someone's poor design...

Well that was happening before I think...well it's all fuzzy now. I think that was when I was using 1 network card.

Yes, I have one nic so it's plugged into my router... dhcp on my router is off with a dhcp forward to 192.168.1.2 (external side of core) so everything plugged into my router gets dhcp forwarded to the core and receives a 192.168.80.x address on the internal side.

that setup sounds fine to me. having dhcp on the 1.X network wont affect the 80.X network. all you would have to do for the firewall is let port 80 through. the web orbiter is different though. youd have to enable what ever port an orbiter uses to go through the firewall also. i dont remember which port it is off the top of my head but i have seen it somewhere. i think it was 13something but...not too sure.

not true..  if you have md's plugged into the same switch, 2 dhcp servers are going to be a problem

they arent on the same switch. linuxmce will provide dhcp over one nic which is on a switch. the belkin router is not on that switch at all.

My CORE has 2 network interfaces, ETH0: 192.168.1.100, and ETH1: 192.168.80.1.
ETH0 goes to my Belkin Wifi Router (192.168.1.1). ETH1 goes to a 10/100mbit switch.

linuxmce wont route dhcp between the two. his setup is fine.

ICMP (ping) doesnt use ports. you just need to enable icmp through the firewall. or for the firewall to respond to icmp if you are only pinging it.

DAMNIT!!..  that's twice today I've replied without reading an entire post and been wrong because of it....  teedge77..  you're right, I'm wrong....  didn't read that his internal side was on a separate switch...

I think I will delete - why would I choose to rebuild as the other arch type? It is Intel which is what it is built as, if I chose AMD it wouldn't work.

sorry, didn't read your entire post... thought you were needing to switch arch types...

You're basically correct...  If the core is down, you want be able to access the internet without setting static addresses on your workstations and point them to your router...  I had the same concern, but now, I just leave my core up all the time...  now that it is stable it doesn't bother me leaving it up..  on the off chance my core has to be down for some reason, I just temporarily set a static address on any computer that needs to get out to the internet...  your question about the firewall is I assume that you want to be able to talk to the core from a workstation that has a 192.168.1.x address..  the best answer is just to leave your core on all the time and don't have any static addresses on the external side other than of course your router..  other than that, you could temporarily turn off your core's firewall or put in some port forwarding in the core's firewall setup.

oh, I thought that using the DVD install was what allowed you to mix arches.

If I follow your instructions will I just need to reboot the diskless and it will find the debs (ie it keeps checking) or do I need to delete that MD completely and start again?

The DVD install DOES allow you to mix architectures...  but yes, you can either delete the MD and start over, or you can choose to rebuild the image as the other type arch by changing it in the web admin and choosing rebuild image.

Users / Re: Blu-Ray player problem
« on: February 11, 2008, 07:27:49 pm »
I actually didn't think I'd be able to use Blu-ray at all for a while.  The way this thread was heading I thought it might be possible to get the video transcoded to something reasonable sized for use in a library.  Hearing that it 0710 can play Blu-ray movies is great.  If I could rip a movie then let a transcode run for several hours I'd consider making taking the plunge.  I'm actually much more interested in the ability to transcode and store than using a MD as a DVD player.  Whether or not it can play without ripping first is far less important as I almost never do this anyway.  I buy movies, rip/transcode them, then play them via MythTV at some later date.  If there is no way to do this with linuxMCE/Blu-ray right now, no big deal.  I can wait until the functionality fits my needs.

Why do you want to transcode a blu ray? Any kind of transcoding (that saves space) will reduce picture quality. Isn't one of the reasons to buy Blu Ray or HD-DVD to have the best picture quality available? With disk space getting so cheap these days (about 24€ct a Gig), I don't see a need to sacrifice picture quality at all.

Oliver

If it's possible to transcode without any 'distinguishable' loss in picture quality than why not save space?  I can't tell any difference between the picture quality of my dvd rips and the original nor can anyone who watches them.  Granted, mine are not typically the 700mb files you normally see, they are usually 1.2-1.5GB..  but considering the original dvd was anywhere between 3-8GB, I see a great benefit from transcoding them to save space.

jondecker;

I totally agree with your statement.   I would even go as far to say that since mysql is nolonger open source that the linuxmce project follow what all serious "open" source projects are doing and plan to migrate/fork to postgresql.

Why do you say mysql is no longer open source? There have been no changes, AFAIK.

Best Regards,
Richard.

Sun bought mysql...  but I haven't found anything saying that mysql will not remain open source.
