Installation issues / Delayed detection of plug and play devices

Finished my new install of 8.10 beta 22812 Saturday around 1:00pm.. immediately my 3 nas devices appeared as plug and play devices and were configured without any issues..

Here's where things get weird..  The next morning around 10:00am I got an on screen message that plug and play detected the internal hard drive and asked if I wanted to use it as a storage device..  I accepted and everything appeared to be working properly so I wrote that off as a fluke even though it took 21 hours for lmce to detect the internal hard drive as a storage device..

Unfortunately, it happened again.. with another device.. Sunday morning around 8:00am I plugged a new IP camera into my network (but made no attempt to use it with lmce), then Sunday night at 10:30pm I get a message that lmce detected the IP camera and wanted to set it up..  a full 14.5 hours after plugging it in... and to make matters worse, I had unplugged the camera later that afternoon so it wasn't even on the network anymore...

New install with the latest DVD, from March 1st:  LinuxMCE-8.10-22812-i386.iso

Finally got everything installed and working and ran Diskless_CreateTBZ.sh

Also, out of curiosity, what's the quickest way to get a new media file added to a nas recognized by lmce?  I know the update media daemon is running all the time, but 20 minutes after adding a new file to my nas it still was not picked up by lmce.

And before I try, I saw a post from awhile back stating that getting cover art from Amazon is broken.  Is that still the case?

But I don't think that will help, sounds like you've got a bigger problem.

OK, I haven't used linuxmce in quite awhile..  I figured I would give 8.10 a shot...  fresh install of kubuntu, updates and reboot, downloaded latest installer, ran pre, install, and post install.

comes up with a WHITE screen, not black with cursor and states installing packages..  ie..  flac, cdrecord, lame, etc...  generates screens, says Loading LinuxMCE...  I never get the avwizard...  reboot and it does the same thing, white screen and states it's installing the packages it's already installed and generates screens again......  it just sits there on a white screen..

trying to select 1 for dvi does nothing because the avwizard never starts..  holding shift during reboot does nothing..

video card is nvidia 9500gt

Any ideas?

Learn how to build a decent PC, or give it a rest.

Zaerc..  you give it a rest...  it's not a heat issue on mine..  otherwise I would be getting lockups when running xbmc/linux on the same hardware..  opengl 3d rendering for the gui and playing HD videos with no problems..  I'm getting lockups with lmce from sitting cold all night turned off, booting up and not even getting anywhere to generate any heat...

There are odd hardware issues that only relate to lmce even when using supposedly "supported" hardware..  for those of you lucky enough to have picked the "right" hardware and never experience these issue I'm sure it's hard to believe it's a lmce problem...  but it is...  it's too widespread to be denied....

I already gave it a rest, but you fuckups have to keep bringing this stupid thread back up.  And yeah I find it very hard to believe this is a lmce specific problem when only a few individuals are having symptoms that seem similar but probably aren't even related. 

If your system fails during boot, then you obviously have a hardware problem, but instead of asking for help and guidance you people choose to bitch about it in this thread blaming lmce for your own incompetence...

I thought I had made some progress by using the dvi output on my video card, but I ran into a problem.  My movies seemed too dark, so I tried running it through the vga again and the darkness was gone.  However, after about 30 mins of a movie, HARD LOCK!  rebooted and couldn't even get past loading screens without the comp locking.  So, reinstalled and am still getting lock ups.  hmm, I guess I just have to keep installing until I find that clutch install.  I think that the dvi output did have some effect though.

Interesting..  same thing happened to me..  a hard lock..  had to reboot, then during screen generation, another hard lock...  rebooted again..  same thing, hard lock during screen generating...

I've built 2 digital picture frames out of laptops that were going to the dump..  took the screen out and mounted into a shadow box style picture frame..  took the guts out of the laptop and mounted to the back of the screen, loaded debian etch, xorg, feh (picture viewer), and unclutter (to make the mouse pointed disappear)...  wrote a few scripts to start it all at boot and I was done..  only cost me 25.00 for the shadow box...  could easily mount a small speaker or two and install a program to play audio files.

My machine constantly locks up..  and I do mean hard locks...  all you can do is power off and back on...  I've changed every piece of hardware and it still locks up...  but it never locks up running just ubuntu and other software...

As for updating cover art on the GUI, we have to be very careful about adding user facing complexity. With the web admin, all administration functions are clearly separated from USING the system, and it should stay this way... With that said, the web admin needs some serious rewriting, retrofitting, etc.. Thanks Jondecker76 for working on this!

I understand about keeping complexity away from the UI..  I don't feel like the method xbmc uses is too "in your face" though..  for example, to actually view the movie info, you press Info on the MCE remote which pulls up the actual movie info, then there is a button at the bottom of the screen to rescan..  you also have the option to change the name of the movie for the lookup from the remote and an on-screen keyboard that pops up..  then, a list of matches comes up, you select the appropriate one, and it's done..

Not difficult at all..  and I feel almost a necessity for any media center solution.

I do have a question though..  as I've used linuxmce, mythtv and xbmc/linux and they all have different methods of retrieving cover art...  both xbmc and mythtv use imdb for movie info and cover art...  both seem to work much better than what you get from amazon with linuxmce..

The method that xbmc uses is by far the best.. (please don't say, "then use xbmc")..  anyway, once you setup a video source, you set content (select Movies for example), then choose where you want to retrieve the info from (there are several different ones, I only use imdb) then it scans the entire directory and updates all the matches automatically...  Of my approximately 600 movies, I would say it matches about 85% correctly.. about 5% incorrectly and then it leaves about 10% blank...  the good part, is that you can change the coverart directly from the UI, and that manual process of fixing the ones that are incorrect works 99.9% of the time...  so, I guess my question is, why not use imdb as an option, and be able to update coverart and info directly from the UI?

So, the only help that I've gotten on hardware issues is that my video card might be the culprit.  I'm going to make a post asking for people to post the ways they have beaten hard-lock ups.  Also if you want, please post any solutions that you've seen here.  I can't think of any other way to approach this since I really want to use linuxmce, but cant find a solution

Does your Core lockup completely? ie no external ssh, no mouse pointer and totally frozen?...or can you ssh in? If the latter then it looks like an X lockup. This seems to affect some combinations of nVidia card and the nVidia driver shipped in LinuxMCE-0710. I cant say we have a handle on this yet... as its very very rare.

If the former then it could be any number of things... bad RAM, bad processor, overheating processor, badly seated processor or RAM, motherboard track fracture... etc etc etc etc etc.

Well, I'm back.. not that anyone cares or anything.. ;-)...  I've taken a break from linuxmce for quite some time...  I was having too many issues...  strangley, all my problems started with the 7.10 betas as 7.04 never really gave me any problems..  video problems.. random lockups....  etc...

I'm giving it another shot with 7.10...  I've replace the my cpu (Sempron 3000+) with a Athlon 64 x2 5200+ and took the 1GB stick out and put in 2 new 1GB sticks...

I installed last night and got most of it configured..  I'm going to finish it up this afternoon and test it out... I will say that I've been running ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 running XBMC/linux all this time with no hardware problems...  no video problems (Nvidia 6150, dvi out), no audio problems (spdif out), and no lock ups with my hardware running xbmc for linux under gutsy or hardy..

I used SageTV for awhile and they had something like that.  Basically in one of the setup screens you had an option for remote control setup.  You would press a button on your remote and the command would show up in a window, then there would be a list of all possible things you could want to assign that button to.  If you wanted button press '9' to mean '1' or FF button to rewind you could tell it do that..  just a stupid example..  you could assign any key press on the remote to do whatever you wanted it to in SageTV.

First I want to say how much I have enjoying creating my home media system. I appreciate the work that has gone into making this a reality.  The learning curve was high (about1 1/2 months into it so far) but I'm a fast learner. 

I've got my Core/hybrid going and a media director for the office. Next I am going to put together another m/d this weekend  for the master bedroom.

From the looks of it, I think it will work. I will report back my experience.

Should work just fine..  The 6100 will help with no video driver issues..  too bad they didn't step it up to a 6150, then you'd have dvi-out.  Very similar to my setup with regards to specs..
