Users / LMCE is nice, but DVDs don't look good.
« on: April 04, 2008, 07:08:06 pm »
I like most of what I see in LMCE, but there are a couple of things that are bothering me.  I use UI-2 w/ overlays (aka Medium)
I'm using an NVidia GeForce 6200 AGP card to a Samsung HLN507W-1 DLP at 720p via DVI, and SPDIF for audio.

I've also experimented with MythTV and MythVideo.
  • First thing is that I am starting with LMCE as a ripped DVD player.  I probably will add the automation and TV feature over time, but that's not where I am now.  There's no way to tweak the UI to hide the unused features.
  • The cover art downloaded from Amazon look awful. Sometimes they look OK in the grid display, but then they look bad in the details display, and sometimes it's the other way around.  I find the coverart that MythVideo downloads to be consistently better.  And it does a better job of scaling the images for display.
  • There's a problem with interlacing when playing back DVDs.  I get jaggies all over the place.  Don't see them with MythVideo.  Is there a setting I need to change somewhere?

I would suggest updating the wiki page for the Abit AN-M2HD

Users / Re: Digital TV signal in and out?
« on: January 15, 2008, 07:16:16 pm »
Thanx for that info.

If I'm reading that right, no digital signal will go through the 150.

I'm a bit confused by this,  how does anyone watch TV without a digital signal, or is this just a cheap card?

I've got an email into Haupauge to see what cards will support it.  Does anyone know if any of the the currently supported cards can handle a digital signal?
The recommended solution for capturing digital TV is the hdhomerun.

Developers / Re: How to manage removable USB storage devices in 0710

I would also l like to see support for exporting to USB storage devices.  There are lots of portable media devices that appear as USB storage devices.  LMCE should provide a way to "sync" media (both import and export) with portable media devices.

This applies to both audio and video.

Users / Re: HELP! How do I add a media director for diskless boot?
« on: January 14, 2008, 01:22:19 am »
You don't have to do anything on the core to add a diskless MD.  Just turn on the MD< making sure it is set to net/PXE boot, and the core will autodetect it and set it up.  It'll take a while before the MD is ready for use, but it works.

I'm pretty sure the optimal way to get an MD up and running is to simply boot the MD without doing anything on the core, not even the "setup diskless md's" in the web admin.  As you said the intial setup for a new MD takes FOREVER, and I'm pretty sure there's at least one automatic reboot in the process.

Users / UI on FiireStation w/o FiireEngine
« on: December 28, 2007, 06:12:47 pm »
Do the FiireStations support UI2 even when used without a FiireEngine?
It appears that the FiireStations are disk-less PXE-boot MDs, so the proprietary Via Pro II drivers must be loaded from the Core.  This is fine when the Core is a FiireEngine, but what happens when the core is a "standard" LMCE Core?  Is only UI-1 supported in that case, using the viaarena drivers?

If your A/V equipment is controlled only by IR, you use a USB-UIRT to send IR signals from your MD to your A/V Equipment.  The USB_UIRT can also be used to receive IR signals from an IR remote control, so you don't have to use a keyboard and/or mouse to control the MD.

Thanks, I'll do that.  I do have a clean Core.  So what you appear to be saying is that I should "NOT" need to manually add the MD.  If I click on the Setup Diskless" button that will do everything I need for the MD ?  I've done that a number of times and it has not worked but once.  I've installed this system at least 20 times so far, but loving all the learning.
No.  Don't do anything on the core.  Simply set the MD to PXE boot, making sure it is connected to the internal network.  The core will detect the new MD and everything should work automatically.  Note that the initial MD boot takes a LONG time, and it may even reboot automatically before it is done.  Just let it do it's own thing.

LinuxMCE MDs aren't true thin clients, but there is the "follow me" feature, where your media follows you from MD to MD.

LinuxMCE MDs are "fat" clients. They can (but don't have to) be diskless network boot clients.

Can't make any recommendations unless you give some details about your requirements.

What audio connector do you need (RCA, Digital Coax, Optical)?
What video connector do you need (HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video, RGB, etc.)?
Do you need DVD-ROM or DVD-RW or none?
What about the case, any height or width requirements?
Are you going to netboot, or do you want an HDD?
Will you be doing HD or just SD?

8. Universal remotes. I have a Logitech harmony programmable. Can I use this, it has to be programmed to control a device, LMCE isn’t in the supported devices list (lol) so how can I program LMCE to use this if the remote has to be programmed itself. Is there a generic device that I should program to that has been tested and works? Does this make any sense?
You haven't told us which model, making it hard to give a specific answer.  Since LMCE supports Windows Media Center remotes OOTB, I would look for a way to program your Harmony to control a Windows Media Center.
