Thanks Andrew,
Its got to be a DVI to HDMI cable then.  My LCD TV has no DVI port.  I will try to find one today.

Jaime

Mitusus,
I got my remote control working last night thanks to your clear instructions.  My remote also uses the lirc_mceusb2.  I only made a couple of changes in your procedure based on what I had found in my investigation.  I wrote about what I did here:

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=3049.0

As I said, I don't doubt that you got your remote working and I specially appreciate your posting the instructions.  They were very helpful to me.  Thank you.  Assuming that your remote is the same as mine (SMK receiver, RC6 transmitter), I just can't understand how the 0.8.2pre2 version, which was dated May 2007, can work with the SMK receiver, if support for it was not implemented into lirc until June 29, 2007.

I guess the only logical answer is that you do not have the SMK receiver as I do.

Thanks again
Jaime

Andrew,
Ok, my video card in the core/hybrid is an Nvidia FX5700 and it has a VGA port, a DVI port and what looks like an s-video port (I got it from a friend, so no manual).  Will I need then a DVI to HDMI cable in order order to connect the computer to the TV without using the VGA port???

Thanks,
Jaime

Hi,
WOOHOO!!!  It works.  I would like to report that I was successful in getting my PVR-150 (SMK receiver, RC6 transmitter) remote control working.  Life is good again  ;D.

I used Mitsus instructions in

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=3095.0

except I downloaded the source code for lirc release 0.8.2 and copied into it the lirc_mceusb2 module source version 1.37.  You can find all of this at www.lirc.org.  As a side note here, I had to use the command bunzip2, and not bunzip as shown in Mitsus post.

The lirc documentation states that the PVR-150 remote with SMK receiver is supported in mceusb2, starting from version 1.30 (June 29, 2007), as pointed out by darrenmason in

http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2517.0

After the successful compilation, I rebooted my LMCE and the remote control immediately began responding.

Thank you Mitsus for your clear step-by-step instructions and thank you darrenmason for pointing out the correct cause of the problem.  It has taken me a week to finally solve this problem.  Hopefully other users like me, with the Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE kits, will find this information useful.

Thanks again,
Jaime

HI
I am glad you could resolve your problem.  I am having a very similar problem with the PVR-150 MCE kit I bought a week ago.  I have not been able to make the remote work, so I was very interested in your post.  Does anyone know if the PVR-500 remote/receiver is the same as the PVR-150?

One thing I could not understand and maybe some of the more technically versed in lirc folks around this forum could maybe clarify.  If the current version of lirc included with LMCE is 0.8.2 released June 9 per the lirc website, which apparently does not support the IR receiver bundled with the Hauppauge MCE kits, as documented in several threads in this LMCE forum and my own experience, how come Mitsus was able to get his remote working with version 0.8.2pre2 which was apparently released even earlier (April 26).

I am not questioning that Mitsus remote is in fact working and I am very happy for him having shared the knowledge.  It seems to me that at least in theory, everything that was included in lirc 0.8.2pre2 should be in the official lirc 0.8.2 release.  Am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks,
Jaime

Blairkutz,
Could you please give a more detailed explanation of the procedure you followed?
I have the Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE kit which comes with an RC6 transmitter and a SMK receiver and IR blaster.  I have been trying for a week to get my remote to work with LMCE 0704 without much success.  I think your solution is exactly what I need.

I have downloaded the g++ compiler, the linux-source package, the lirc 0.8.2 release source, and the lirc_mceusb2.c version 1.37.  I am not sure if I need to replace lirc_mceusb2.c in the lirc source files and then compile.  The instructions from the Ubuntu page seem rather complicated and I am not well experienced in compiling code.

Thanks,
Jaime

Hi all,
I am getting a very similar problem.  Did you finally solve this?

I am running LMCE with an nvidia FX5700 chipset.  Display is through the VGA port directly to a Selectron 42 inch LCD TV.  When I set the resolution to 720p in the video setup wizard, which should give me the best image for the 1366x768 native resolution of the LCD screen, the resulting image is slightly larger than the screen vertically, but it is noticeably larger horizontally and off center to the left.

It seems like the video card is generating a 1366x768 image, but cropping it to fit the 720p resolution (1280x720).  This does not affect the GUI for the LMCE, because the setup wizard asks to adjust the image size for the GUI.  However, everything else --Mythtv screens, KDE, Computing -- is shown off center, shifted to the left, and cropped at the top, left and bottom edges.

I have been looking everywhere but don't seem to find how to correct this discrepancy in image sizes.

I don't have the same problem with 1080i resolution, but the system becomes kind of sluggish at this resolution, so I'd prefer not to use it.  This problem is not present when running the same hardware under Windows XP at the same resolution.

Can someone shed a light to what I may be missing?

Thanks,
Jaime

I have a PNY AGP video card with Nvidia 5700 FX chipset running in the core/hybrid with UI2 with alpha blending.  It is running well with the nvidia driver that comes with the DVD.

I have also setup a second Media Director in my study room, booting through the network.  The study room computer has an nvidia 8600GT, for which I had to download a new driver 100.14.19 from www.nvidia.com.  It is running with UI2 with alpha blending after the driver upgrade (only UI1 before the upgrade).  I just completed this installation today and I still need to see why Mythtv is having problems showing tv from the core (I get a black screen), the rest is apparently working ok.

I ran into problems at the beginning because the installation script would setup the vesa driver instead of the nvidia.  You might want to try forcing the nvidia driver in the KDE System configuration utility (Kmenu, System Settings).

Good luck,
Jaime

Justin,
I get my cable channels directly from the cable provider without going through a decoder box.  If you have a cable box installed, you will need to connect the cable box video and sound output to the PVR-150 corresponding input connectors, not the coaxial cable connector.  If this is the case, then you should specify your video source connects to the composite port or s-video port of your PVR-150, instead of Tuner1.

Jaime

I also had some problems getting my system to work with my nvidia based video card.  You don't mention what hardware are you using.  Have you tried 720p resolution?  This is the resolution I used with my LCD TV, which also has a 1366x768 resolution.

Good luck,
Jaime

tschak,
Sorry I am not familiar with a USB UIRT.  I read this receiver is included with the MS MCE remote, is that it?  Another post I found in this forum suggests that the next release of LMCE will include the LIRC version that supports this remote.  I will keep my fingers crossed.

I am using a GeForce 5700 FX video card. Hmmmmm, I wonder if this has anything to do.

Thanks all,
Jaime

Installation issues / Can't get my remote to work [Solved]
« on: November 04, 2007, 03:53:39 am »
Hi all,
I have been trying out LMCE for the past couple of weeks.  I think it is a great system.  I have been able to get everything more or less working, except the remote control that came with the Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE kit.  The remote is silver on top and black on the back, and has RC6 printed on the back.  The receiver is black and is marked "SMK" in the backside.  The kit came with an IR blaster that hooks up to back of the IR receiver.

The transmitter appears to connect with the receiver, as the red light in the receiver turns on every time I push a button in the transmitter.  The LMCE does nothing.  I have been unable to get the LMCE box to recognize that the IR receiver is connected to the USB port.  Plugging or unplugging the receiver provokes no response from LMCE.

I tried specifying in the Web Admin, Media Directors page the IR receiver as being mce_usb, or mce_usb2 as suggested in some posts.  When using the mce_usb2 option, the system adds automatically a XP MCE Remote to the MD definition.  The configuration of the XP MCE remote seems to indicate it is using a configuration file that is for a RC6 remote.   However, nothing works.

"sudo apt-get install lirc" reports that the software version installed is the latest.

Is the IR blaster supported under LMCE?

Appreciate any help on this.  I don't know what else to try.

Jaime

Hi,
I have also been wrestling with getting my new Hauppauge PVR-150 MCE TV card to work with LMCE.  I was getting an error in Mythtv every time saying that all available inputs were being used by Mythtv.  After four days of trying different options, reading every related post I could find in the forum, reinstalling LMCE several times, and even trying out Knoppmyth, I finally found how to make it work.

I had everything else in the UI more or less working as it should.  It turns out that the Mythtv setup in LMCE does not work out of the box with the PVR-150.  You need to do the following:

1.  Start Mythtv Setup under the Computing option of the LMCE UI.

2.  Go to Capture Cards, Add new card.  Mythtv can see that there is a PVR-150 card available.  Change the V4L option to MPEG-2.  You should now see there is a new entry on the list for your PVR-150.

3.  Go to Sources and add a new source for your cable provider.  You should see the new entry on the list of sources.

4.  Go to Connections.  You now select Tuner1 and specify this tuner is connected to the source you just created.  Tell the setup program to scan for channels.

Thats it.  Exit setup and now the Mythtv "Watch TV" option should work.

Best of luck,
Jaime

I am very new at this Linuxmce thing myself, but it would seem to me that if you have an LCD TV, you can bypass the s-video converter and output to the TV screen using the vga port on the TV directly.  I think this would give you the best possible image quality.  You would need your PC graphics card to be able to output a suitable resolution to show on your LCD TV.

Good luck!
