I've been reading about Pluto and now Linux MCE for the two years I've been planning my house and only today did I even get around to installing it for the first time ever.

Its very good that you are not a developer for Linux MCE.

So are you going to go cry elsewhere or do we have to listen to your complaining? For some reason, you and linuxMCE are incompatible. Great story, now please go harass the next board where you will complain incessantly. Also, nobody asked for your opinion on the video, your thoughts on developers and so on so please stow that crap. Its uncalled for. Please, go figure this out yourself. We don't need negative nancy's wasting space for the sake of their ego.

wish you luck on the build.

Thanks.  There is something about the do-it-yourselfer in me that helped me make the decision to GC it myself, and perhaps that same attitude is what draws me to linux...

its probably that feeling of ultimate satisfaction when your done. I just finished a small room refurbish and I take pride that I didn't sub out a damn thing. Anyways, enough of me hijacking the thread.  Cheesy
738  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Linux destroyer on: February 11, 2008, 08:49:12 pm
I always keep Linux destroyers in my fleet, even after I get Linux battleships.  Their attack and bombard stats aren't as high as the Linux battleships, but they are useful for spotting the enemy Windows submarines.

The best is when you first get Linux destroyers and you can go around taunting all the Windows ironclads and fishing boats, not to mention whooping up on the Windows caravels.

the funny part is that sadly...there is windows on submarines. Thank god its not for anything critical (since I was there) but it was still scary as a submariner to see the windows logo...you kinda want absolute faith in your boat!

Another option is to set it up like the demo video, with the sat receiver at the tv (or 1 at each TV), with the HD outputs going directly to the TV and SD going to your MD(s).  With LinuxMCE controlling everything you can watch HD stuff live and have SD for recorded video as well as live TV on TVs without a HD receiver.

I was laying awake in bed and that is the same thought that occurred to me, and it also will help save on disk space cuz full HD is like 7gigs an hour or something like that...
And then I could also feed the SD into the multi-zone amp and get the output on all the monitors using the 'follow me' feature...

Things are looking up, maybe I can get some sleep.  This house is stressing me out.  Word of advise: don't be the general contractor on your own home.

heh. im the gc on my parents home. i feel your pain! wish you luck on the build.

It does not mater what you think or say, fact is lmce is to much hardware
specific and 90% of people will have same problems that i have.

I suppose its a new form of Darwinism. Those that can read instructions, and those that cant. How many of these complaint threads are we going to have?!?

Seriously, look into what you are looking for before you just make uninformed decisions. it goes a long way towards being satisfied with your choice.
741  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: USBUIRT is finally set up - having just one problem with it (Pictures includ on: February 11, 2008, 02:28:10 am
Odd. It seems like you have it setup properly in the device connections page...and the IR codes work when tested. I would say try a different IR code.

My setup has my desktop, and ps2 connected as well as my core hybrid. Even though I was capturing the proper codes as tested in the AV page,  for some reason it wasnt translating to my tv. The USB_UIRT would fire an IR command, and I could tell my TV was receiving it because it has an ir activity light but it would do squat. I eventually had to do a workaround where I copied the channel down IR command into the input select to get it to cycle that way. It works but my situation is somewhat different than yours.

Are there any alternate commands which can get the input on the tv to change?
Also for the xbox, is there and other command than might get it to come on?

I think i've pretty much hosed my existing setup as far as configuration because the usb_uirt dies when trying to capture a command and I have to reload the router. I was going to do a fresh install sometime soon i haven't gotten much further than my existing workaround.

742  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Technical question about what controls auto power on/off of TV on: February 11, 2008, 02:17:48 am
I believe this is related to the screen saver timeout which can be found on...(looks it it)

1. log into the webadmin
2. on the left hand side, there is a column.
3. Under 'Devices' the 5th option down is orbiters
4. Find the orbiter that is on the tv. In my case I have a core hybrid in the living room.
5. If you look down the list of options, you will see the box 'Seconds before power off'
6. I changed my to 0 as I watch a lot of Adult Swim online and didnt like the tv going off in the middle of the boondocks. Change it to suit your needs.
7. Reload and you should be good to go.

well that's a disappointment...based on the topic I was hoping that this would be about a cool new open-source warship...  Cheesy

I disagree, there is no read me file on the DVD and yes, on the overloaded homepage I did find an install instruction link, but who is going to read it, if it should be so easy? Sorry mate, but every intelligent developer asks before it deletes the entire harddrive with all partitions on it. And if this 3 seconds check is too much for the developer, what about just say after listening all harddrives = Warning, your choice will wipe your HD, partitions, data everything without asking again?

Sorry but this is highly unprofessional...

i know my response is a bit childish but...

maybe you should move back to vhs, pens, papers and filing cabinets. Obviously things like computers are beyond your comprehension. Why this thread isnt trashed (meaning deleted) by a mod is beyond me.

seriously. this is obviously a result of your lack of paying any attention. your comment 'on the overloaded homepage I did find an install instruction link, but who is going to read it, if it should be so easy?' says everything any reasonable person who need to hear to figure out you are a bit thick headed.

In the future, read the manual.
745  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Cannot use absolute scrolling with Gyration mouse on: February 09, 2008, 03:17:12 am
I was messing around with several different versions of nVidia drivers using different settings. Basically what was happening was direct rendering wasn't fully working so the GL menu that popped up blinked constantly.

thats exactly my problem. and about the best description of how to go about fixing it...what were the final drivers you wound up using?
746  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Cannot use absolute scrolling with Gyration mouse on: February 08, 2008, 08:09:22 am
That's very odd... I actually got it working out of the box when running 0704. I do remember having a problem with it once, but it was related to the video drivers...

which video drivers are you using?
747  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: audio will not be found even though its on the hd? on: February 01, 2008, 11:50:41 pm
hi

thanks for the reply.. yea moved them to this system. is there no way to just view the actually files as you would if you were just using the comp like normal

I normally can find things using the sort by file option if nothing shows up under performer.

Assuming they are somewhat organized, that should be a decent workaround.
748  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Added control for TV, but it does strange things! on: January 30, 2008, 11:11:46 pm
Hmmm... as I mentioned, the TV supports (and LMCE is configured for) discrete/absolute power, not toggle. There seem to be a number of events when it will switch off the TV. When you hit TV, or when you stop it, and even it seems when you go to KDE desktop...

i have this behavior sometimes too. Sadly, sometimes you need to change things in the connection wizard to get it to understand your setup. It took me a long while to get it working (mostly) and i posted a similar thread to this one about it.

I would say, double check the Media Director page and make sure it knows that the tv device is the display output.

My system shuts down the tv, then turns it back on and switches back to the lmce input whenever i turn a device off, i.e. dvd player or ps2.

for some reason it doesn't do that with my reciever when listening to the radio and im still trying to figure that one out.

I realize my advice is general but i really did have to play with it to get things working properly.
749  LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Performers Pics on: January 30, 2008, 11:04:55 pm
Thnx for the reply, but I think was not able to get the point...
I already added pics of performers, I'm just wondering, why they're only shown if I use the search function, and not in the media library in the UI if I choose to sort by performer...

augalex

sorry i misunderstood you then. how are you adding the pictures? via the media browser? and what UI are you using?

I have noticed that sometimes multiple covers can lead to only the 1st one being shown.

Example,

Hunt for Red October - Has its own pic associated to the file, which grandfathers in all the things related to it in the DB.
James Earl Jones, Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin - All show the coverart for Hunt for Red October UNLESS I

-log into the webadmin, and go to the 'media browser' and find say James Earl Jones.
-delete the associated pictures (there may be more than one as in my case he plays darth vader in another flick you may have heard of)
-Add the one I want (i.e. a headshot)

Now, when i browse by performer, I see james earl jones headshot instead of the cover for Red October. Its still in there dont worry though. The image is still associated with the movie title.

*note* it seems that by deleting the box art from  performer picture will remove it for all performers associated with that particular file.

OR (just did this while i was typing the post)

If the performer associated with the program you are watching, you have the option in UI2 to take a screenshot and you can set it to the selected performer.

Just tried this with Ghost in the shell and it worked. Didn't have to futz around in the backend to add it.

hope i answered this time  Cheesy

these were my settings. I just tested it on bot the living room and bedroom MD

note the number I used were the device numbers for the media directors. I believe BuleK used the device numbers for the xine player and an attached squeezebox.

double check the command your sending, maybe even go to the 'device tree' and use the 'send command to device' function to iron out the proper way send commands to a specific device.
