bort,

The status you report has not changed and others have noted the lack of updated info on release date and have requested any sort of quick status.

Some also share your questions about why updating the status (by editing the page or simply replying to forum messages) remains hard for folks who may have updates to share.

I agree that additional status communication from they-who-know would increase confidence and facilitate planning for the community.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Better Media Organization / Browser
« on: April 27, 2008, 02:21:52 am »
Hello,

I'd like to use this thread to advocate for a better media browsing solution. I'm relatively new to LinuxMCE, but I've been using a MacMini with FrontRow, for two years, to navigate my media collection. I have 1100+ (and growing) video files in divX, XviD, avi, wmv, mp4, mkv, and others. FronRow is the only reason why so many people bought the mac to use it as a media center.

I find LinuxMCE MUCH MORE robust in the sense that it doesn't crash/hang as easily as the mac. However there is no equivalent to FrontRow to navigate a complex media tree. All my files (no matter how I sort them) are shown on a flat list, which makes them unmanageable. In my opinion this is the most important feature LinuxMCE is missing.

I recently bought new hardware just to run LinuxMCE, so I'm fully committed to make it work. Eventually I want to replace MacOS and install LinuxMCE on the Mac too.

Erasmo.

It not advocates we need so much as people who are willing to take on the task and DO it. People are working on a lot of things. So jump in  ;D

i use browse by file to locate my media all the time. maybe im missing something in your post. can you be more specific?

Which UI are you using?

under UI-1, on the right hand side (when looking at the video files or audio listing) there is an 'options' button. The option to change the sort is on the screen that comes up when you tap 'options'.

under ui-2 its on of the options in the lower left corner. you can sort by file, performer, genre, etc.

I like the work so far. You could use Gnash http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/ the FOSS version of Flash. And since most users will be editing on a desktop machine, not repurposing their TV for editing, using flash is less of an issue.

You don't have a delete for a song added that isn't wanted. The reordering didn't seem to work for me. Possibly because I have a bad entry in the list. I'll get some input to you on functionality and graphics in the next few days if you want. . . I think this is a good start on a better content manager than LMCE currently has.

Would it be possible to suppress attributes that may not make sense, like some of the video ones for music content?

And adding a complete album in one pass would be nice.

Thanks for the feed back.

in the next pass i hope to:

-fix the reordering issue
-add in tooltips or a help popup. btw, to remove unwanted files drag them from the list. i will more than likely add a trash can icon or something to make it more obvious.
-arrange the filtering to just show music related attributes such as performers, genres, albums, etc.
-About the albums: add them all at once how exactly? I was thinking:
-select by filter by album and then dragging the album to the play list without having to go to the file panel to select each one.
-Or a small pop up showing the album with check boxes for the track(s) you want?

And another question while we are on media.
Shares. Right now im trying to work out a browse by file system but its kickin mah butt. help?!? Currently the best I have is searching by path, but that isnt quite where I want to be. I've been staring at what they've done in the webadmin currently for a couple months and it still doesn't make sense so any help is appreciated.

For instance. I know how many hd's i have and where they are. But i dont know how other stuff show up under the system, namely windows shares, network storage and raid drives. Any examples of tips on that would be great.

thanks for the feedback again

Hi golgoj4

I gave a try to last release and it sounds good to me. Also UI is not that bad (for sure more usable than UI1..).

I faced an error while trying to remove a song from a playlist. Dragging the unwanted song out of the list throws this error:

Code: [Select]
[RPC Fault faultString="HTTP request error" faultCode="Server.Error.Request" faultDetail="Error: [IOErrorEvent type="ioError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2032"]. URL: /playlistDelete.php"]

thanks for the feedback. i will into this.

And when I try to drag a song to a different position within the playlist I get the following error:

Code: [Select]
<br />
<b>Warning</b>:  implode() [<a href='function.implode'>function.implode</a>]: Argument to implode must be an array. in <b>/var/www/DDMB/playlistAdd.php</b> on line <b>23</b><br />
  Files Added!

In both cases song is not removed/shifted.

Apart of this, I think that it looks very promising.

Thanks for your effort

Marco

Am I the only one missing something here - it doesn't work for me.
Downloaded zip, extracted as per instructions, pointed browser at localhost.
Page starts to load - Playlist frame appears, and no more.
Browser says waiting for localhost but nothing else draws on screen.

Any pointers?

thx
-Coley.

do you have any playlists currently? It should throw an error if it cant connect to the db. In the latest version you can add playlists from that same screen as well.

i looked a little and watched a video or too. i think we can take some notes on what to avoid for videos.  ;) they werent that bad i guess...like larry the cable guy doing a home automation demo. it was all a bit sparse though. linuxmce is ahead of them in most ways. the only thing that side has on linuxmce is the voice thing, rfid and the videos. i will probably look some more later. the floor plan thing looked like it may be a little more extensive than linuxmce. that isnt necessarily good or bad....just different. they did also have phidgets working with it. i believe someone on here had posted stuff about phidgets. like i said though...apples and oranges kind of. linux somewhat limits some of the functionality for now. maybe ill check out some of those videos and see what else there is later.

ok maybe im just thick, but were the videos on their site?

more specific? hes asking what people think could be learned from that project. people dont usually ask questions when they have all the answers. so i guess the point was that he was trying to see what people thought could be learned from them. features probably wouldnt be the only thing. voice has been brought up before but it was determined that it just wasnt feasible yet. the floor plan/diagram was different in there. did you look at the other one at all? i think what hes asking makes perfect sense. what can we see they have done, that may help us in some way or what could they take from us and use for theirs.

Actually i did look before i posted and really saw nothing of interest other than the voice function. And the wiki is a bit light on information...

i did notice some posts in the forums about environmental stuff, mainly sensors and whatnot. Still trying to find the floorplan bit. were you able too?

check out this page: http://vcrib.wikidot.com/system:list-all-pages - Is that all the information or am i missing something?

Sorry i wasnt specific on how to remove songs. You simply drag them from the list. I also added a new method to find stuff specifically by album, performer, etc. I will eventually add more features to this but that brings me to my second point.

Thom: Im still learning javascript, and as i stated before, eventually the flash will disappear and be replaced by the Javascript.  You made it clear that it wasnt a good idea to use this method, and you have a very solid point. But as many say: jump in and help. So thats what im doing. slowly? Yes. Its not like there were a lot of people interested in getting down and doing it, and im certainly not the most qualified.  but dont worry, im not that thick that I would leave it in a 'closed' state. If anything, this is a dry run to get ideas on where I want to end up.

So dont worry, I dont intend to call it done until we have a happy javascript version.  :-X Its just a matter of me learning it. tbh, im sure some enterprising young individual could start now with the php i've done on it so far (maybe?). Oh well, dont sweat it people. We will get there :)

Noticed this software while poking around on the web. It looks interesting

http://vcrib.wikidot.com/start

I was wondering what we as a community could learn form them and vice versa ? Any constructive thoughts on this project and comparing and contrasting it to LMCE?

What exactly is the point exactly? Features added? Not to be disrespectful but it seems LMCE offers a lot more so I not sure what could be 'learned' from it. Can you be more specific?

cool. looks very promising.    Does linuxmce use shockwave/flash  anywhere else?

nope. and im planning to replace the flash with straight javascript with the same functionality. Someone wisely pointed out that using a closed program like flash makes it hard to maintain for others. so the flash version is sort of a 'quick' prototype before the final doodad.

Hi all

probably I'm missing something obvious ... nevertheless I followed the link but found nothing (a page with a download category called LMCE, with nothing inside)

Can anyone point me in the proper direction?

TIA
