Installation issues / had black screen, hit 5, then 7 to fix, now can't get past resolution settings

There it is in the subject line.  So from what I gather if I've read correctly is that I've chosen svideo at a resolution of 1024x768 to be able to see anything in AVWizard.  That brings me to a screen that wants me to choose my video settings, but no matter what I choose from the svideo list (or any of the others for that matter) it doesn't display correctly and has to go back on its own after the 15 second countdown.  I have a NTSC television, but neither of the NTSC options work correctly.  It seems odd that I can choose options by randomly hitting a few keys on the keyboard until it works, but not only do I have to reinput those same settings again after finding one that works, but I can't choose resolution for svideo.  Is there any way I can force these settings or is there any other sort of workaround?

yeah, but this is a support forum for a community project. It's not like you pay for help. Get the difference?

Never said, suggested, or implied that this was a paid service.  I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't put words in my mouth.

There are many good souls in here that invest much of their spare time to help out. Honor and respect their contribution with doing one's homework before asking already answered questions.

I have yet to ask any questions other than a basic one about the deb package on the install CDs not behaving as it is supposed to according to the instructions given for it.  I honor and respect the many good souls, but I am merely pointing out that the self appointed welcome wagon, of which you are a prime example, would rather insult new users rather than welcoming them into the fold and strengthening the support for MCE.  I'm having several issues with my setup currently despite using recommended hardware, and you'll notice that I have yet to post a single question about it because I am searching for my answers or trying to figure it out on my own.  Despite that, it's people like you that leave me with the feeling that after I've exhausted those avenues that I don't have a community of experienced users to fall back on for a little advice now and then.

Funny you should word it that way, as the link from the wiki is clearly labeled "Support Forum".

Actually, as a strange aside, I've found that MCE has been a Linux Repairer for me.  I have Kubuntu and WinMCE dual booting off a 180 gig SATA drive, and I picked up a 750 gig IDE drive on clearance to be my media storage.  After 3 attempts at reinstalling, because I couldn't get grub to work properly, I removed the big drive and it worked flawlessly... except that it refused to let me read anything off it once I put it back in.  I left it as ntfs so I could use it in both operating systems, and despite being able to read the other ntfs partition on the small drive, it absolutely refused to do anything with the big one.  I fought with that for quite a while before I gave up and went ahead and installed MCE.  During the setup process it detected the drive and set it up with full read/write access automatically!  I'm a complete Linux newbie, so there's no telling  how long that would've taken me to sort out.

So, there's the newbie perspective from the opposite side, just to balance things a bit.

edit: well crap, now it can't read either ntfs partition.  The joys of using beta software

It's good to see an attempt at reorganizing some of this info in a more logical and easier to search format.  I've been researching this package for months trying to figure out how to get everything properly set up before I began, and some info is almost impossible to find a clear answer on.  The wiki has become a mess, and posting a question on the forums... well you're more likely to be attacked than get any help.  It does no good to search when all you find is thread after thread of people being too full of themselves, yet not a single answer to the issue you're searching for.  There's no point in building a community full of bad neighbors.

well, played around with it and finally got it to work from command line.  For some reason the new beta install just doesn't work by clicking on it for me.

Also, another bug I noticed was that it refused to accept the CD version of my Kubuntu install, so I had to rip it back to iso.  On that menu, the options listed were On CD or the 2nd MCE iso instead of having the option listed as being on an iso like in the previous dialogs.

So that's pretty much it.  After this horrendously long install finishes I'll see how it all works.

Well, I managed to finally get around to dusting off my old PC and get Kubuntu on it so I could still dual boot Windows MCE (darn you netflix!).

I downloaded the iso images, burnt them to CDs, dropped the first one in and clicked on the deb package.  It opens up, there's a lot of hard drive activity, then it closes.  That's it.  According to the instructions I'm supposed to have an icon on my desktop and go from there, but I'm not getting anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
