LinuxMCE / Users / Re: Anyone using or tried - NeatX, FreeX, NoMachine or similiar?

Hello Garath, I currently use No Machine on my core and I'm able to connect to a remote desktop on my core from any windows PC or Ubuntu PC in my home. I have also opened up ports in my firewall so that I can connect the remote desktop from outside my network. It works very well and I have no complaints. Its also nice because once I'm in my core I can use the Remote desktop application in Kubuntu to connect to any my Windows PCs using VNC. This allows me to troubleshoot issues for my wife when I'm not home to fix whatever random issues may occur. I use Filezilla to transfer files to and from my core both inside and out side my home network. It's nice to be able to connect to my core and troubleshoot issues and not have to be stuck in my closet.

LinuxMCE / Users / Boxee, kinda a fun little addon for just media

Hey all, I just wanted to share with everyone a neat little media setup that I was using along side LMCE. I am sure some of you have heard of it. My wife didn't like all the extra bells and whistles in the LMCE orbiter so I set up a boxee box downstairs and mapped it to the core and had it scan my media. It imported all my IDE Tags and went out and found some that I didn't have before. It was pretty neat. Worked pretty good for just media.
anyway... carry on..

I was able to ping my MD from my core and there were no dropped packets and the ping time was 0.116ms which is really actually pretty quick for a response time.

I haven't tried to ping from the core as of yet. The switch is about 2 years old now, its a no name gigabit 8 port switch. I do have 2 other PC's plus 2 laptops running wireless from an access point on one of the switch ports. I don't think it is network related unless the network port I happen to be using on the switch happens to be failing. I will try to ping the MD when I get home today to see what happens. If I do see dropped packets I will try maybe a different port on the switch and see if there is an improvement, If there is I may just upgrade my switch.

LinuxMCE / Users / Strange MD Issue
|
on: December 21, 2010, 09:19:17 pm
|
|
Hello all, I have a strange issue with my living room MD. Basically when I let the MD sit and it goes idle and then I try to use the MD there is a few min delay for it to recognize that I have pressed buttons on the remote. It looks as if the skin has to reload. Once it loads again everything works fine until I let it sit again. This happens on UI 1 or UI 2. I have replaced the MD and there is still no change. My other MD's do not have this problem and I did not have this problem in LMCE 7.10. The only thing that I can think of that might cause this issue is maybe the physical distance from my switch to my MD.
My switch is upstairs in my closet and the MD is downstairs. That MD happens to be the one that is farthest away from the switch. Could it be that I am just dropping packets or there is a delay due to distance?
Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: PPTP VPN - iPhone VPN access

Hello All, I wanted to setup VPN on my core. I checked the Wiki and did find some instructions but I do not find them to be very clear. I was wondering if it would be possible for someone to provide some step by step instructions for setting up VPN on the core, including links to the files needed, Where to place files and then what commands to run in terminal to apply the VPN so I can see the VPN options in the Admin site?

LinuxMCE / Users / Using the core as a SOCKS proxy server
|
on: August 17, 2010, 07:42:23 pm
|
|
Back in 7.10 I used to use my core as a proxy server using a SOCKS5 connection with putty and foxyproxy for firefox. I didn't have to configure anything on the server it's self to do this other then having an open port. Since upgrading to 8.10 I have not been able to get this to work. My Putty is set up exactly the way it was before. I can log in to the server using Putty but when I try to enable my foxy proxy my connection just times out when trying to brows web pages. Does anyone know if there are any extra steps to get this working. I am just not knowledgeable enough at this point to figure it out on my own. Does anyone else use their core in 8.10 as a proxy?

LinuxMCE / Users / Re: MythTV fails from lmce (but works from kubuntu) on MD

Yeah... I think I effed it up real good. That preference file i think caused some issues. I tried reinstalling the MD and all I get is a cifs_mount failed w/return code =-13 error. the MD never boots.
I was retarded enough not to back up the old preference file. any ideas?

There were some updates that I had not yet installed and now it seems my boot issue is much improved. It still takes somewhat longer to boot but now it seems that everything is working.. Well almost everything. Myth is still not up but I am working on that.
