I am sure this is a known issue but I didn't see anything about this right off hand. I finally upgraded to 8.10... Got one of my MD's going and went to play a .dvd file that was ripped from 7.10 and it will not play because the dvdcss library is not installed. There is not software listed in the software area of the AV wizard so I am at a loss as to how to download the required software. Any Ideas?

I agree, but I want to make sure I know someone is there before I go running out in my boxers for some neighbors cat that happen to make my dogs bark.

Hey,... been a while...
Was working in my yard yesterday and my wife and I found an intimidating threat carved in to the cement wall that addressed my wife by name.
I can think of a few unstable people from our past that might will us some harm so I was somewhat creeped out.

So, I think I am going to invest in an affordable IP Camera (or any other camera that would work) and some zwave sensors. I would prefer one that has a night setting.

I do have a standard home security system and have not been using LMCE for our security but I figure the extra protection couldn't hurt.

Any help would be appreciated.

Users / How do I delete database entries that are no longer valid?
« on: January 01, 2010, 08:05:07 pm »
I recently copied some music files from one drive to the other. Seems the files were added back but the old ones are still listed in the database as well. Is there an easy way to reset the database to make sure that the files referenced actually exist?

Is this your core?
If so, then you may want to provide more detailed specs.
I know that LMCE was designed for having 2 NICs, this may or may not have something to do with your unstable network depending on how you have your network set up. If LMCE is acting like a gateway to your network then this would be a problem with only one NIC.

I have found most of my lockup or network issues stem back to faulty or non supported hardware.
I had a MD booting with a bad drive that caused my whole network to stall until I figured out that the hard drive inside the unit was failing. After removing it everything worked as intended.

Hey... I was planning on getting a new MD for Christmas but it turns out I didn't have to.
My work was getting rid of some obsolete PC's and they had a whole stack of Dell GX280 Small form factor machines. I already had a GX270 at home that works pretty well but just not fast enough to play any high def video files. Well these are a lot newer.
I am able to have a 720P resolution from the on board Intel chip set VGA port and it will play 720p High def. movies which was impossible with the GX270. The unit only has 512 megs of ram but seems to work rather well.

Can't do 1080P but still it is a big improvement from what I was using. I picked up 2 of them.

Once you replace your basic skin folder you need to do a full regen from the admin site. I forgot to mention that. so to recap... *not the official or correct way to install but it works*

1. Back up your basic folder
2. Rename the LCARS folder to basic
3. Replace your old basic folder with the new basic folder you created
4. Log in to the admin site and select "Wizard/Devices/Orbiters"
5. Click on full regen for all orbiters.

Users / Re: LinuxMCE vs Windows 7 MCE
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:15:14 pm »
You know, I see these threads every now and then that tell about how some product whether it be windows based or other is better the LinuxMCE and I usually don't say anything. But I figured I would chime in this time. I am glad that other people have found "Better" solutions for their media and possible home automation. But what positive things come from posts like this?

I am a successful LinuxMCE user. Knowing very little about Linux when I started I still managed to build my own core and MD's out of spare parts given to me. I have a core and 2 md’s and everything works great. I have some lights in my home that are automated and I am still building little at a time on to my system. Over the last 2 years I may have put close to $400.00 in to my system, but when I started I paid nothing for a very long time.

I really think posts like this miss the whole scope of the project. It has very little to do with a pretty UI or that you can play media right out of the box (though I have had a hard time finding media that my LinuxMCE will not play out of the box).

If you want a media player system only… then go with mythTV or a Microsoft product... Linux MCE is not just a media player; it is a home management system. If you read the wiki and take advantage of this forum and actually ask questions about things you don't understand then you get the great results.

Most headaches arise due to the use of unsupported hardware. I at first was very skeptical when my system was not working correctly. I was getting video skips and core lockups and network crashes and did not attribute these problems to bad hardware. But with a little investment ($30.00 here and there) and some patients I was able to weed out these issues and get everything working.

My point is this... we know that Microsoft products have a prettier look and feel, that is what sells their product. And maybe they even seem to support whatever media needs you have better. Still, up to date, there is no other system out there that can do what Linux MCE does. If you are not looking to use Linux MCE within the scope it was designed for then I would advise just not using it. If you are going to critique it at least have an in depth understanding how this system is supposed to work and perhaps an understanding of why it is not working for you.

Hopefully this does not cause any hard feelings; I am just tired of seeing this awesome system get trashed by users who may not see the whole picture.

Users / Re: Video playback for High Def video files .mkv and .avi
« on: November 23, 2009, 02:38:25 pm »
I went back and played the video file on my hybrid core and it seemed to play pretty well with exception of a little green blotches every now and then, which was expected. I used top and found that at max my cpu was around 70% but averaged around 50%. Could the high cpu usage could have been due to the fact my son was watching Thomas the Tank engine down stairs while I was testing and I didn't realize it.

So I am in the market for a new MD anyway. I may just have to get one for myself for Christmas.
Thanks everyone.

is that the cpu that you list in your sig? if so, it probably just doesnt have enough grunt to decode those videos.
Yeah, the cpu listed on my sig is the one in use currently.
maybe I should upgrade my processor.

I did add more RAM so I have 3 gigs now instead of 1. (I should update my sig)
For some reason I didn't think that I would need a bigger, more powerful processor.
I didn't hit a wall until now.
Is there a minimum recommendation for playing HD Video files?
